What's a legitimate reason to ask someone to opt, in?

For example if you were going to send them a free ebook on how to lose weight etc..
Are potential prospects expected to believe you are just trying to help them out?
Or can you include other reasons as well as to why you want them subscribed.
I'd like a better way than just coming across as the most helpful guy in the world lol..
I'm sure they wouldn't trust you..although I could be wrong.

Let me know if you have any ideas. Much appreciated thanks.

Why ASK them to opt in?

Personally, I would much rather prefer the option of having the option to opt in. I can't stand when people "force" me to sign up to an e-mail list just to see a sales page or just to download a product I'm interested in. I don't buy products or even look into them anymore but whenever that happens, I use a spam e-mail just for that purpose.

If you're providing great value and you're an authority on your niche, why wouldn't they opt in? Just provide them the option by putting a shiny little box that doesn't force them to opt in and you'll have far higher targeted subscribers.

Sometimes it is best to be upfront with the people receiving your product, ask them to opt-in so you can send them more information.

A good way to convey this to your customers would be to say something like "Subscribe for future updates" or something along those lines.

I would be asking them to opt in because this would be entirely for a squeeze page only.
Sorry forgot to put that in original post. Thanks though

You simply offer one thing: Solve their problem/offer a solution, to a problem they are having. If i had a problem, with spending too much on grocery and I came across your squeeze page and you offered tips + an ebook on how I could save more money. Then I would most likely optin.

Your goal is, to offer some sort of solution. By doing this, and offering a nice freebie/ebook, then you will have people joining your list.

They will believe or not believe, based on your freebie offered. If they like that freebie, then they will possibly be on the look out for your upcoming newsletters and emails.... You need to build a relationship, with your list in the up coming emails...

If you give your subscribers real substance and value, and you use your experience to help them navigate the waters of the subject they want to learn about, you will gain their trust, and your recommendations will pull alot more weight. In order to be successful, you have to give a bit. So if that means being a "helpful guy", then be that guy. Trust me, it will pay off for both you and your subscribers.

I completely agree with Cory. Dont force them to opt-in.
Concentrate on providing them with good material. Use articles, video, social tools.
Keep it fresh-looking. If the niche is something they are interested in, your site is a reference to them and so, the OPTION to opt-in will be a great opportunity for them.

Learned a long time ago that when a person takes the time to opt-in then that person has a real interest in the subject matter. The trick is to make sure your website's content is of high quality because the visitor will assume that the ebook will also be high quality.

Testimonials are a good way to reflect you care and photos of you at live events helping people.

I think you should ask them!

Be direct about it. They want your information and you want their email. Put yourself in their shoes, if you some across a blog you like and you really find it helpful in some issue you need to know about and you want to follow up with it, so you yourself will search for the subscribe form to get emails every time a new post comes. Right?

    It's that easy!
