What Do You Say in Emails to Your Opt-In Subscribers?

I've decided to proceed with creating an opt-in list for my website.

I've searched online, but haven't been able to find what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd ask you guys.

Can you please point me to some references (websites, blogs, warriorforum threads, etc.) that I can learn from regarding what you want to say (or send) in the subsequent emails you send to people that opt into your opt-in list?

I'd like to get some insight on the do's and don'ts of communicating with them, how often I should send emails, as well as tips on how to connect with them in the emails, and of course, the best ways to go about recommending products to them in the emails.

Thanks in advance for your help.

This is the difficult bit. I have personally decided that I will send a few blog posts each week. That's my way of sending 'value' to the subscribers.

    It's different for everybody.

Some list builders immediately knock out offers right off the bat and make sales while others (like myself) build more of a steady relationship with them.

Here's a good thread to start:

First of all delivering on what you promised. If it was a report, video, article, etc.

Also discuss what is going to be involved in the newsletter following up. Give a sneak peak so that they know what to expect. Throw in some personality, tell stories your audience can relate to.

Just be yourself, and mail when you have something worth sharing, e.g. product launch, new blog post, or anything you think your list will enjoy.

The only don'ts are to send multiple offers and put profits before the relationship.

I agree with everyone above, what has helped me tremendously is to build a relationship with my subscribers and offer them value. To be honest I find it kind of fun. What I do not believe in is pounding my list with offer after offer, but hey to each is own right?

      Thanks for the feedback guys.

One more question, if I may. I would like to add a hyperlink to each of my existing blog posts that sends the person that just read that post to my review of the affiliate product I'm promoting.

      Two questions:

      1. My website is Wordpress. Do you know of a plug-in that can allow me to plug-in hyperlinked text on each blog post without me having to manually ad it to over 200 posts?

      2. Does anyone have any examples of how such text might read at the end of each post? I was just looking for an example to get a feel as for how it's done. I'm sure there needs to be more to it than "Click here to read my feedback on the new Blah-Blah-Blah widget..."

I just checked out their website, it appears that they turn your content into links for affiliate products, unless I'm reading it wrong.

I'm just trying to add a link to all of my blog posts that will take them to my product review page for the affiliate product I'm going to be offering.

Is all 200 of your blog post hyper relevant to your one affiliate product? If so then go for it. If not , either do not use a link on that post or find something that is relevant, do a review for it and send them to the new review.

Irrelevant post with a link will make you look like a used car salesman .. which is only good if you are a used car salesman .. and then not really lol.

Go to plug ins in your admin panel and search for keywords like multiple post hyper links and such .. you should find a plug in pretty easy.

I beg them not to close the message and with tears in my eyes, tell them my life will never be the same if they leave me.

Seriously though, I put in a lot of my own content written specifically for the email sequence. 400-700 words for my content messages. Personal anecdotes, situations I've dealt with specific to the product I'm about to blast them with and so on. I mix in a hard-sell type mail every couple of messages. I throw in a LOT of personality. I'm just trying to find the right balance between value and promotion.

Here's three things to keep in mind when drafting an email.

    The three Es:

    1. Entertain
    2. Educate
    3. Earn

I forget who came up with that but as long as you have those components, you're on the right track.

The only reason I go through all this effort is because I know no other way lol. I too spent some time looking for templates and stuff but couldn't find anything.

This may sound silly, but I literally TALK to my list.
If I am sick, I send an email out telling people that I've been sick
and how I am feeling now.You would be surprised as to how many people on your list will send you a get well message.

I also ONLY recommend products that I buy and use myself. I will never do a JV and push a product that I do not own and have tested it out (or got my hubby to test for me - he is not an IMer :-( )

I also do not bombard my list with free bonuses, because that will eventually become ineffective.

Why did people opt in to your list?
What is your niche web site about?

It goes without saying that you ought to feed people on your list the things they are hoping to find when they come to your web site.

I personally think it's fine to show your personality, tell stories, etc, but the reason I join a list is to have my questions answered about some topic. I want to learn, to discover, and to be satisfied in finding answers to my niche questions.

It's sad that your car blew up this morning, the cat vomited in your shoe, and you didn't win the sweepstakes at Dialing for Dollars, but I really read your emails and go to your web site for the niche information you offer.

If it will help your search, what you are describing is called a "follow-up series" or "autoresponder series."

With my lists I tend to do 2 informative/relationship building messages per promotional message.

I also make sure that in the message prior to a promotional one that I build some excitement so they're looking forward to the promotional message.

Just write to people naturally with the same ease that you write forum posts here.

hi .... there are many schools of thought of what to say, when and how ... my suggested way (and this works well for me) is to proceed as follows:

In week 1, the level of interest and engagement by your subscriber is high ... he wants to check you out to make sure you truly provide value ... if your free stuff is no good; if it has no value ... why should he buy anything from you? The paid stuff will probably be no good either. So Value is key ... throughout

As of week 2, I would suggest correspondence every 3 days ... again providing content (with subtle pitches contained) and 1 straight - pitch email in every 3.

    I hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback. How could you break it down by weeks for a specific user, being that they're going to be joining at different times?

Perhaps I'm just not familiar with how these campaigns work. I thought that other than the initial message they get once they sign up, that they kind of just get added to the existing list and receive everything that the pre-existing opt-in users get in their emails from me from that point forth.

      Am I wrong?

In general, I would say it depends. hehe.

What are you going to use your email list for? What is your overall goal with the list?

I have one list that is pretty small, only about 1K subscribers, but it is an extremely loyal and personal list. When I send emails I always get open rates over 85%, and that is because I don't sell to that list. I only use that list for relationship building with the customer base. I'll send personal stories, industry information (real information, not junk), and updates about what they have purchased from me. The closest I ever get with that list is to add a link in the PS section.

Once you have a plan about what you want the list to ultimately do for you, then you can start to develop a strategy for how to execute on that plan.

My goal is to continue to build a relationship with them, and to casually promote my affiliate product to them every now and then...

Or is that goal not well-enough defined?

If it is (well-enough defined), how would you recommend I go about using the opt-in list to accomplish these goals?

The main things to consider are (1) your market (2) what you hope to accomplish.

Tied to your market is what you promised at the time that
they signed up--deliver on that as soon as possible.

On what you hope to accomplish--are you selling something?
Building a blog following? Offering a service? The answer to
these questions would determine the type and frequency
of information you send to your subscribers.

Then you become the expert reviewer. You have to include
why they should trust your judgment and give a 'testimonial'
about the product, including at least one weakness.

Since it's not your product you can't reveal the secrets, but
you can tease by telling the "what" and not the "how".

    Hi

There is a lot that goes into sending emails. As a starting point, all you need to do is have the right intentions. What does that mean?

Well, make it your aim to offer value rather than to make sales pitches. So aim to give more than you get. Send emails with information you know your subscribers would love to know about.

Send high quality free ecourse and free ebooks. Send information about where to find the best resources to accomplish tasks you know your readers are currently struggling with.

For example, if I was struggling with having to manually send an email or 2 every week of the year, I would be delighted if somone told me about autoresponders like Aweber.

Why? Because with that autoresponder I could write several emails at once and set them up to go out once per week for the next 3 months or year.

So in short, just solve their problems.

Of course in the first email, introduce yourself and let them know why you are qualified to help them and how your newsletter will help them.

And because you are in business to make some money, you can occasionally send an email with an offer to buy your product/s or affiliate product/s. Just as long as they are high quality. Value is the key.

When recommending products, target a specific problem they are facing and show how the product will solve their problem. What benefits they will get from using the product.

I would send more emails in the first week (3 or 4), ease off to 2 a week for a few weeks after that and finally settle to 1 a week.

For thoroughly comprehensive training on how to communicate with your list, what to say in you emails, the best days to send emails, to make offers, how to format your emails and so much more, I recommend you check out www.followupsellingsystems.com.

The training is the best on the internet for its price.

    Hope this helps,
