(Almost) Finished My First Kindle Book!

I started writing my first Kindle book on Monday. I had no previous experience of writing for Kindle before Monday (although I have a kindle for reading books on). I found some online instructions, downloaded 2 programs, and started churning out the text in Microsoft Word. I read in the instructions that complicated formatting is difficult using the approach I'm using - so I solved that one easily - only used v. simple formatting!

It's Thursday, and I'm almost done. Definitely well under 1,000 words to go (word total will be about 10,000) - some proof-reading and editing is needed too. I've tested converting to the Kindle simulator on the PC, and it still seems to work okay.

I home-made a dummy book cover, which works too. But I have a real one on order, which I should get in the next day or two.

In the book, there are a couple of references to freebies on my website - so I do actually need to put them there, but that shouldn't take more than an hour or two.

The book is in diet / fitness / self-improvement area.

I'm happy to answer questions about the process I used, or what I've done.

And also if anybody has some advice to kick start my book promotion, I'd like to hear that too!

There is a lot of great info in the WF Kindle section, why not come in and join us?

    http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...brainstorming/

Bryan has published a wealth of information for publishing and promoting your book (which you should already have started doing if you are this close to being finished).

I've got quite a few titles in the works, planning on releasing a group of them as a series in about a week.

Since you are so close to being finished you might consider KDP select and offer some free days around Christmas or Boxing Day - a great way to capture that crowd who received shiny new Kindles from Santa Claus!

Kindle is an amazing platform. I have sold thousands of books now and it still amazes me!

To kickstart promotion I highly recommend trying KDP Select and seeing if it works for you. This is a good way to bring visibility to your book.

Way to go and welcome to the club.

Couple of things I may be able to help with...

    1. I have some well trafficked (is that a word?) blogs in these areas where I could mention the ebook/review, etc...if you want

    2. Would you be interested in an interview (either audio/phone or email/text?) Ideally we could do one on the process of writing your Kindle Ebook and possibly another on the topic itself if you wish

    Cheers,

    Jeff

Slightly off in my estimates. Now at 10,968 words, with two short sections to go.

Jeff - yes to both! I'd like to finish & release first.

Bill - no I haven't started doing any promotion yet. Imagine I'm a complete idiot who has no idea what he is doing (which shouldn't too be hard, as it's not that far off from the truth in this case), can you explain the KDP select thing in words of 1 syllable for me?

I've been so focused on writing, that I simply haven't thought about promotion, other than: "I should probably start with zero or low price to get some reviews, before raising my price"

Great - PM'd you with details, when you are ready, give me a shout.

Incidentally, this goes for anyone having written, released their own ebook (Kindle or not) - always looking for people to interview and learn from...

My first book went up yesterday, it's just a short guide, about 2.5k words and I'm not expecting much from it in reality, was more about working through the process. I am gobsmacked just how easy it all is though in terms of actually getting a product on the shelf and this is definately something I will be investing more time into. Currently researching/writing book number two, and this one will be both bigger and have more effort put into the marketing side of things.

Now that I think about it - I have two books I've self published through Create Space (which are published on Amazon through Create Space). I've been to busy to look into how difficult it is to convert them into Kindle format & get them on the platform. Is it a lot of work if I already have a .pdf version of a book?

    12,305 words.

    In less than 4 days.

I think I am going to faint.

(BTW this is 2 books in 2 weeks - I wrote a ClickBank book last week, but it's on hold while I clarify some details).

Okay, I'm done. Really Just need some additional proof-reading checking.

    .Final word count = 13,070

The cover from Fiverr came back pretty good, I asked for one small change, which the guy made immediately, and have the latest in hand.

One issue I'm not sure about is the size of the cover. I have a 600X800 cover - but the info on Amazon's site is contradictory (or I don't understand it), sometimes point to larger size covers.

    Hints anyone?

I was advised to use 1000 pixels on the longest side, which is what I'm doing and it looks fine. Not sure how correct the advice is but it seems to work for me, believe you can go up to 1500 though?

The product image wouldn't accept 600X800. What I did for now, was triple up the size using Corel PhotoPaint. This seems to work, and looks okay. I guess it might be pixelated if they really zoom in, but this will do for now. I understand I can update it later.

          Good luck.

          Don't stop with one.

I just put out a test a few days ago to try something out. I'm not sure how great KDP select is because I got up to 191 in the free chart and I've sold 1 book and lent 3 since the promotion ended.

I've got some big plans next year and will hopefully write 500/1000 words per day towards each book.

The 600x800 cover is the old way to do it, and it doesn't look good anymore. Many people are wrongly recommending it too, which is not good.

You want your cover to be much larger than that and don't include that cover in your actual book file. There was actually a recent WSO about Kindle Formatting where they told you to put the cover in the book...that will give you an awful looking duplicate cover so don't do that.

You can upload your high quality cover directly to Amazon and then they will use that for your sales page on Amazon and automatically convert it and put it in your book as well.

Sounds like you used Fiverr so I'd make sure they didn't give you an illegal copyright protected image.

I have been looking at the specifications of Amazon, and among the options I chose 1000x1600.

It is in mid range, and keep the 1x1.6 ratio they need.

I checked it in the kindle for pc and looks fine.

I´m still spinning my wheels before uploading, but will get there sometime next week.

Are these the number you were mentioning? the images can go much bigger.

          Sandra,
That should work but Amazon did recently change their recommendations for book cover size.

Here is what Amazon is saying right now in terms of best size:

"For best quality, your image would be 1563 pixels on the shortest side and 2500 pixels on the longest side"

If you create a 1563 pixel wide by 2500 pixel high book cover, you will be optimized perfectly for both the Amazon sales page and the book itself.

Let me know if you have any questions.

My kindle book is live! Apparently the publishing process takes a few hours, so you might not quite be able to see it yet (although I can).

The page on my own site - Weight Loss Journey: How a Middle Aged Man Lost Weight, Kept It Off, and Radically Improved His Fitness - And How You Can Too - Which is linked to the page on Amazon.com's site about my book.

I slightly messed up the description, and need to edit on Amazon's site, but can't seem to do so now.

I'm so excited, I wanted to print out the Amazon page about my book and frame it.

You can go to your author central account and edit your book. Much easier than editing via KDP.

Also on your cover, make sure your Fiverr worker had proper permissions to use the images that were used.

I personally get around this by giving the outsourcer the image, myself, so I know it's ok to use.

The final version was 13,045 words. It took me 4 days to write, 1.5 day for the website. All long days.. Plus about 3 days messing around with the software, Amazon site, etc. But I squeezed that into 5 actual work days... yes I worked every hour, and then some.

I'm worn out. Can't write again at that rate. I don't think.

Or do I do another one next week?

Thought I would join in this thread. I am a full time Internet marketer but I first started out as a ghost writer and recognized that there may be a platform on the Kindle to at least make some extra income.
I wrote some simple how to books that sold every now and again and wondered what I was doing wrong, after all I had heard all the stories about people selling thousands of books every month.

I decided to study the process further and applied all the knowledge I have on seo and keywords etc, plus the marketing experience I have in the mainstream.
I wrote a couple of erotica books, one of which sells at least one copy a day for the last three months, and the other has never sold a single copy despite having the same marketing.

I helped my partner who has a graphics background and makes great covers to get herself established on the Kindle platform in her hobby of cooking. So she created recipes and cooked them, and then did her own photography (another hobby). We have all the formatting nailed and proof reading. So everything is done correctly.

A handful of those books sell a few copies a week and some hardly ever sell. We do promote on KDP select and loans often out number sales/.

We belong to a fair few Facebook Kindle groups which helps with reviews etc. But this is the big question, do you know, or are you making serious sales? The reason I ask is because I keep hearing people selling products on how to do it, but I actually don't know of anyone who I actually know who makes reasonable money.

It would be interesting and perhaps inspiring to hear of someone who is making more than our few hundred dollars a month.

I think back a year ago, you could make a lot more with non-fiction books - I know I did. But sometime in the spring it seemed like a lot of stuff changed - more people releasing books in those niches, Amazon changing the algorithms etc.. My income from non fiction went down a lot and I was doing quite well with it in early 2012.

I do think a lot of people are still pushing the "make a bundle on Kindle" products perhaps not realizing that ship has already sailed or maybe they just are doing it to make money from people who don't realize those methods don't work... or maybe there are some secret methods I don't know about.

For fiction, I think you have to have a long term mindset. Keep putting out books. I'm doing a lot better with my fiction than non-fiction now but it took me several books to get going. I don't write erotica so I don't know much about it but it seems like everyone is writing it these days so I would assume it's pretty hard to stand out in that niche but if you write good ones, then people will want to buy more so the more books you have the more money you will make.

I just noticed that you posted a link to your book. I'd definitely recommend changing your cover. While it looks nice, the text is too small and many people won't be able to read it well when viewing your cover when it's shown in a small box, which is how a high percentage of the people will view it. We've tested this stuff like crazy.

Ok found author central and will fix the desc first thing in the morning.

There was a thread, I think in the war room where somebody was giving away a copy of their kindle wso. The wso had very detailed instructions in things like choosing keywords, categories, and tagging. With some screenshots I believe. Anyway I can't find that thread again. Could anybody help me find it?

Maybe the name of the thread or the wso author?

I've spent an hour+ looking and can't find it. I am pretty sure that the thread was mentioned or linked from one of the recent kindle discussions in the main Internet marketing forum - that's how I found it in the first place.

I wouldn't say the ship has sailed on non-fiction. I'm primarily writing non-fiction books and have a steadily increasing income. I will say this. The 30 to 50 page books I was writing when I first started don't seem to be selling like they used to, but the bigger books are doing fairly well. A full-time income is possible, but it's a numbers game. You probably aren't going to strike it rich with one book unless you get lucky. If you have enough books for sale, you'll have at least a few winners that will bring in a steady income.

Some of the books I thought weren't going to make many sales have turned out to be some of my biggest sellers. I write in fairly obscure niches though, so your results may be different from mine if you're trying to make your mark in a niche like diets or MMO.

The thing I like best about Kindle is you have a lot more niches to choose from. Nobody is going to buy an e-book from Clickbank about dinosaurs, but they sure as heck will buy it on the Kindle. You also have the children's market that you can take advantage of. People are hungry for quality kid's books on there, too. Try to think from a book buyer's perspective and create books you'd want to buy.

Yes, true. You know, thats actually a really good point. For people that are interested in stuff like History and other "stuff" that wouldn't sell on Clickbank, Amazon could be good.

Also the large books are better because then you can easily put them on createspace and have a nice physical book (not a thin one that people are disappointed in when they get it in the mail)

I think the ship has sailed though for easy money on Kindle. Much like the early days of the internet when you could slap a site up using Traffic Equalizer and make tons of adsense money. It was easy. People can still make money with websites, but its hard work now. Same with self publishing - you can make money with fiction or non fiction its just a lot more work now but thats good news for people who aren't afraid of work!
