Offline Warriors: Statistics showing how stressed business owners are?

Do you know where I can find some statistics showing how stressed the average business owners are? I found one below for you to use if you wish.

When asked, a majority of business owners confess they often feel like "slaves to the business and, in fact, the business runs their life".(Business Advisory Council - 2007)

Thoughts?

this is the point I try to make to people who always claim they want to start their own business...in other words...it cost to be the boss LOL

Chris, I'm not sure you're going to find statistics that are that direct. Maybe they're out there, but you have to do a lot of sifting.

Another approach might be to look at the effects of stress. Things like high blood pressure, heart attack, depression, high divorce rate, insomnia. You might find what you are looking for at the intersection of the two sets -

small business owners and people with the condition.

For example (with easy-arithmetic, made-up stats)...

1,000,000 have symptom A, and 100,000 of those have a small business.

Statistic: In the group study done by XYZ, a full 10% had Symptom A, a side effect of stress.

    Hi, Chris,

I would suggest that you attend some local Chamber of Trade meetings and mix in at the after business melée. There is a lot of information bantered around and the branch secretary is almost certain to be able to find some statistics for you if you ask nicely.

My own feeling, after over 40 years of owning my own businesses is that small businessmen love to moan. They have a major problem in their own locality, they are seen as 'rich' so they try to live that down. I never met a small businessman yet who wanted to give up. (I know, many have been forced to - but that's not the same thing)

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.
Build it, make money, then build some more
Some old school smarts would help - and here's to Rob Toth for his help. Bloody good stuff, even the freebies!

Yeah....just wanted more statistics for today's presentation. Wanted to emphasize the point that busisness owners should not do their own marketing (e.g. not trained plus they are stressed...effects on family ect.).

      Thanks Art!

        Hey Chris,

Maybe I'm too late for your presentaton, but what about conducting your own survey of local business owners (or niche business) & asking a few questions of them?

        Not too "salesy" like :
        • What do you enjoy most about {their biz}
        • Like least...
        • Need help / advice with ...
        • etc
Keep it fairly short & to the point, just a few (well chosen) questions.

Once you have the stats you then have a valuable "real time" tool to share with your target market.

Also send copies to local news agencies, radio, papers etc ..... extra exposure & extra "3rd party" credibility.

        Hope this helps
