The best way to learn about Internet marketing?

I know little tidbits of information but even when using the search feature here on WF, I need to look up each aspect of marketing individually. Is that the way I should go or is there a way to learn everything in one place, one thing at a time?

Any books, videos, or threads here that can be somewhat of a course to go through and learn as much as I can as a jumping off point?

First you need to identify your own interests and what you know about those interests. Once you've done that you need to identify whether or not it would be viable to do as an internet business.

    • Are there people online currently monetizing your interests successfully?
      .
    • Identify the different business models they are using

Then, find a mentor and study carefully what they do.

As you are learning, stay focused. Sometimes I am working on things, then I start surfing around the web and I tell myself to stay focused.

Same as you would any other skill. A combination of studying from someone who is knowledgable about the topic and applying that knowledge in real life. It is like asking how to cook or how to read. Get to know someone or a resource that gives credible info and try it first hand.

    good luck

I have found that I learn the most from studying what other marketers in my niche are doing. As Mike Hill stated, you need to identify you niche or target market. If you have done this already, I would look into what types of marketing work best with the crowd of people you are targeting. I search Google for keywords that I target and see if I can find people who are successful in my target market. I subscribe to their updates and watch their actions. I also try to pay attention when they get responses to their post so I can tell what is working for them. I even visit their websites and view their youtube videos for examples. Just the fact you are here communicating with others and reading shows your on the right track tho . I am always googling something and researching, once you spend enough time doing this you will better understand how to use the information you find in your favor. Good Luck!!

Study and study some more, than take massive action..You will make many mistakes but know that the way to success comes with many failures usually so never give up..

If you can find a mentor or coach that would also be great and a possible way to reduce your learning curve.

    My I offer another perspective?

I view all of this more or less from the perspective that what I am after establishing a business that connects consumers with products.

Important here is that this is the core of what we are doing, and what has been going on for hundreds if not thousands of years. Some people do it with stores. Some with hot dog carts outside the busy office building. Others via mail order. Still others get together and combine resources and launch huge businesses.

In an effort to grow their businesses many advertise (market) their businesses/services/products/etc.

There are many methods which we can 'market'. The internet (and now smart phones) seems to be the rage now. Just like when newspapers came out, or when radio or tv came out...

Simply a NEW vehicle to market your business/product/service with...

You see- keeping this in perspective really helps me make sure I am keeping sound fundamentals in clear view. Not having a solid plan considering which products I would sell to which demographic group of people would be a sure fire recipe for disaster. In fact, every (or nearly every) rule proven in businesses over the ages stands true to today.

The emergence of the internet did not make a swath of new millionaires over night but rather (much like TV) merely rewarded the early adopters and fast learners while drawing market share away from the dinosaurs who were slow to face the challenges of a new medium through which to reach targeted audiences with.

So, to answer the original question-
I say the answer is a resounding 'NO' if the one posing that question bases it from a position of not having a business/service/product/etc already making sales in a particular market area.
(however, there are good products that can teach business concepts)

If, on the other hand, one is looking to add the internet as a medium to expand their reach beyond current levels- then without question the answer is 'YES'.

    be good!

The best way to learn internet marketing is to actually do it. The big problem that most people have is analysis paralysis where they think they need to do everything before doing it. But the reality is you learn the most when you start doing it, so just pick something you want to learn about and go do it, and you will learn about it along the way. So if you want to learn about video marketing, go shoot a video with your webcam, get some free tools to edit it and put it on youtube.

The best way to learn something is to always get your own hand dirty.
Knowledge is important, but I always think that gaining experience is far more superior than just learning the theories.

If you're brand new to IM, I'd spend a week or two just reading various posts on here and absorbing the information. Search for items you're interested in and formulate a plan of attack. There are a lot of paths you can take to become profitable. You've got to decide which path best fits the skill set and initial level of investment you're willing to put forth.

There aren't a whole lot of people who are successful on their first attempt at IM. You have to get your feet wet and learn what works and what doesn't. Learn from your mistakes and move on. Eventually, it'll all start clicking. When I first started IM, I couldn't make money to save my life. Now, it seems like everything I'm trying is working. The difference? I went to where the money's at instead of waiting for it to come to me.

    Hi Guys,

You never know enough about internet marketing.

There are always new ideas and ways of doing things.

I spend at least an hour a day doing some research about internet marketing.

I set up a swipe folder on my desk top where I keep all the new information I have found.

Then it is easy to find that information again.

What out though that you do not just surf the internet for anything.

It is so easy to waste hours on the internet.

Stay focused on what you are looking for.

Truly? Get a mentor. They save you a stack of time that you might otherwise spend re-inventing the wheel.

You'll also often get a higher level perspective of the business than you would get if you start off by yourself, as your mentor will be (hopefully) thinking from a holistic point of view.

That sounded wordy to me, so i'll try to redo... a mentor will think about how to build a business, whereas most newbies think about building a website, coding, writing emails, creating a product etc.

That's where they have the most value IMO.

The honestly best way IMO to learn about Internet Marketing is target one niche, learn about it, and consistently take action. If you can afford a mentor it might be best to hire one to shorten the learning curve to you. But if you cant then study, and take consistently take action.

I've found along the way that the best way to learn about internet marketing is to just do it. Get in and get involved - try out different strategies, see what works, see what doesn't. One strategy may work for one site, but another may need little/more work.

Until you try something personally how can you discover if it will be worthy and worth the time implementing.

Also, read blogs as opposed to books as blogs are the most up-to-date, and also forums are a wealth of knowledge - but remember forums are opinion portals and people have varied opinions on different methods, tools and techniques.

      I totally agree.

Just start working on something. The best knowledge comes from your own experiences.

Because, there is a lot if misinformation floating around on the internet. You will never know EXACTLY what works until you test different techniques. It is also recommended to hire a mentor.

So slap a website together and start working! You will learn a long the way!

You can browse amazon, read the reviews, check the ratings and copyright date (very rarely anything prior to 2009, less than 25 people giving it an average above 4 stars), and the 'Look Inside..' A few titles to start with (for absolute beginners needing a bird-eye view) are:

Scott Fox, e-Riches 2.0 or Internet Riches
Eric van der Hope, Mastering Niche Marketing
Robert Skrob, The Official Get Rich Guide to Internet Marketing

and once you're familiar with the basics:

    Brendan Burchard, The Millionaire Messenger

(These are the ones most frequently mentioned by the local mastermind group of college students.)

Just understand that continual learning is going to be a permanent and key aspect of Internet marketing.

If you can write (or speak) reasonably well, you can probably write your own paychecks. If you can't, are you willing to put in the time and effort and expense of learning? (You can, of course, always outsource all or part of it, but where's the money coming from to do that?)

Kindle publishing is all the rage right now. Amazon wants to sell their Kindle devices and have a vested interest in a steady flow for months and years to come of fresh titles on a variety of topics.

YouTube is also hot, and perfect for those who can give a decent talk (5-10 minutes on up to full-blown hour long 'show and tell' presentations).

The key always comes back to you must have a product or service to sell, and you must get your offer to as many qualified buyers who might benefit from purchasing it. The good news is that none of this has to be textbook perfect[ just get most of it mostly right and you'll do fine.

Once you've determined that Internet marketing is for you, join the War Room. That's one of the best investments in your future you'll ever make.

So many great ways to learn about internet marketing.

Besides investing in books, programs, videos, or coaches ...

I believe the best thing to learn first is the WHY, and the physcology behind it. I still think, and will always think, that the mindset will always dictate the amount of success you have, or don't have with all aspects of life (including internet marketing)

So yes all of the answers above are great, but definitely look into the mindset aspect of it, it will make learning the entire process that much easier

If you're just getting started out and aren't sure what direction to head in, I'd suggest checking out Pat Flynn's website Smart Passive Income. He does a great job explaining things and breaking them down into small, bite-size easy to understand chunks. He's pretty good about catering to newbies and doesn't assume that all of his readers are established marketers.

  • You need a lot of sources in order for you to clearly understand the twists and turns of internet marketing. Sometimes, it is just not enough to read one or two articles about internet marketing for you to fully visualize how things work.

By joining forums related to what you are looking for, then you will be able to get more information. The more information you gather, the better. Also, reading related threads about the people's experiences in internet marketing can also help you.

Honestly speaking, it takes time in order for someone to understand things about marketing. I am very sure that even those successful ones are still learning as days go by. I suggest that you read and read and stay updated.

And do not be afraid of trying things yourself because most of the time, theories are not really the best teachers for you to learn. It's the experience that teach us best.

Id like to share this tid bit of wisdom from my 7 years online!

There are literally a ja-million ways to earn income online. Don't just look for a way to make money online. Look for a business plan that you can build up/scale up and sustain long term.

If you want to be in this game long term youll have to think long term. Invest in a few solid Online marketing courses. Learn copyrighting, list building, sales funnels, product creation and advanced traffic tactics.

    # 1 Study/Learn..................
    #2 Take Action!!!!!!
( Do not do both at the same time though )

It's quite the broad question you just asked because there are many ways to answer.

First you have the "What kind of IM are you looking to invest yourself in?
That alone will have boat loads of information for you to ponder and chew on.

Secondly, there's the question of "what will you be doing in this particular branch?"
You have the categories of niches, investments, ways to market yourself and or product.

Thirdly, "how do you want to go about doing it?"
You have vast amounts of sources, if you have money to spare you can become very successful very quickly (if you are using it wisely). If you don't have any funds, it's still possible, but in many ways more difficult.

Overall, as many recommended already, it'd be best to start with a mentor.

But perhaps you should look around the forums and see what others are doing. Learn what IMing is, the different branches, and learn what suits you.

Then run with it and find a mentor if you'd like.

It also depends what you are willing to get involved with. When I started out I wanted something I could set up and not have to deal with customers at first. So I bought courses for being an affiliate for Amazon.
I also have heard to diversify your portfolio (don't put all your eggs in one basket) in case one area fails you don't lose all your income. ( As states pass tax laws for online purchases Amazon won't allow affiliates to participate from that state, but you could get a bank act. in another state tho.) So move into other affiliate programs like Clickbank etc.,
you could set up adsense sites and send traffic, there is a new course coming in a few days called Adsense Firestorm, you can google it. Get some money in to pay for outsourcing as you move into a bigger business, buy courses as you need them. Sign up at WF and get auto messages sent to your email with the keyword when you need a course they are always coming out. Don't do what most do, keep buying and buying without implementing. Start with a course and do it. Take notes or get a digital recorder to always track your ideas and thoughts to stay on course or for the future. If you don't plan- plan to fail.

    I understand your worry

You don't need to learn everything. Marketing is not about school. You don't give exams. Marketing is like real life business. It's about getting results. It's about knowing the game from a practical perspective and immersion standpoint.

Do you learn everything about swimming before you jump into the water?

Yes, you can have a trainer, but you could also learn the basics on your own. Just jump into the water. That's how I learned IM myself. When the student shows up, the right teacher comes in as well.

Some prefer to have a coach before they start, others when they need to learn more advanced methods.

    What about you?

    There are two ways

    1) Create a product and sell it on clickbank so that it gives you a good leveraging.
    2) You become affiliate and promote others product. It takes lot of time and effort.
You have to select product that you can confidently talk about.
Create a blog and post helpfull articles, go where your customers are, get them to your blog and convert them into optin leads. As time passes your passive income keeps growing.

I feel the best way to start off in internet marketing is to basically get your feet wet by actually doing something. Once you start to do something, you can always go back and modify and make it better. I think too many people get stuck with being perfect when things will never be perfect, if ever.

The two places where I would start would be:

    1) The 5 star threads in the main forum (just click the ratings tab) - As you go through them, think about what twists you can add to some of the plans that you will read about in these threads. Following the plan will yield you good money but adding your own twist to it will yield you GREAT money!

    AND

    2) The Laptop Millionaire by Mark Anastasi - This hardcover book is a great primer and you will find the case studies in there to be great starting points to experiment with.

The single most important and certainly most overlooked foundation for IM is information. It is very easy to get lost and jump into this or that and a lot of information that you look up will be little more than a glorified sales pitch with a few useful tidbits of info. You will definitely be better served if you take your time and do some real research before you leap into anything

First thing is first! Lose that mindset now!!!

You don't need to know EVERYTHING.. You need 1 traffic source to master, a list and products that the list want. You need to pick a niche, understand it well and give them value!! (content that will help them reach their goals.)

Using the search option and reading ebooks about internet marketing are good. The best way is by having a mentor who's actually making good money. But you'll probably have to pay for them - but it's worth it. The last option is to just throw yourself into woods and fend for yourself online. Good luck.

I joined a team of online marketers and plugged into to their training webinars. I learned a lot more from that than from any other courses or e-books I paid for so far online..

How come no one has suggested taking a course?
I came across Search Engine College, which offers
well organized courses on SEO and IM at $99 a month.
Maybe someone here can provide a review of the course,
on whether it is worth it or not but I think the course can set
a good foundation for a newbie and it will save a lot of time
that would have been spent researching online. It can be tiresome
searching through a forum, especially if you are not even sure what to look for.

A few people here mention hiring a Mentor. Something which i've been thinking about to guide me or point me in the right direction but how do you find a suitable one for your specific niche?

    Any recommendations?

  • I agree with most of you. My life also changed after i opted for a mentor. From Zero to Hero on fast track. It was lucky to found a right one. With so much scams around, i was indeed lucky about it

There is no substitute for experience when it comes to learning. But you need to know that you don't have to learn everything in order to be successful. Simply master a specific skill can be enough for success

To the OP. You need to answer the following question. What is an Entrepreneur? An Internet Marketer is a Entrepreneur. There are many definitions to the above.

The academic one, but no one asks the Entrepreneur. (duh)

However, the answer to your question in the post. Conversely, 97% of what you need can be found on the net for FREE. But the other 3% can be found in one-on-one coaching.

But we are getting ahead of ourselves. Its been my experience that you do everything at once. Finally, its a new way of thinking without fear.

      Upgrade your thinking!

Yeah I paid for my education online.. I spent far to much time screwing around getting distracted and trying things for 5 mins and then moving on.

Once I paid for the education and mentoring I suddenly had a lot more to lose so made sure that I was a success! ACTION ACTION ACTION

I sometimes tell people the best investment (for getting into this space) you can make is spending a lot of money on something.

Even if you never speak to your coach or it's a total scam, it's one helluva way to motivate yourself to make things work and earn your money back.

I sometimes wonder what the success rates of some WSOs would be if the prices were increased by 100x....all else equal

Obviously that's pretty screwy, but I'm willing to bet the success rates would be multiple times what they are for the $9 price point of the same product!
