Creating and Renting out Banner Space

For those that have created banner ad space on their blogs (or websites) and rented that space out to advertisers, what are the biggest challenges to doing this? I've been trying to convince a friend to get into this side of things but she doesn't know how. What are the difficulties and obstacles with doing this?

Most people just have issues finding advertisers or setting up a payment system. I would suggest going with a company that has a marketplace like BuySellAds.

If you have banner ad space on your website, think about it. Someone is only going to rent that space if they can make more money than they are paying you. So why would you want to rent it out when instead you could use that space to advertise your own products or affiliate products and make the money your advertisers are going to make.

Fantastic point WillR. Advertising for yourself does seem to be make more sense, especially for someone who doesn't have tons of traffic. Yet, there still are plenty of high traffic bloggers and websites who do rent space out. I wonder what their toughest challenges might be -is it creating the block space, setting up the payment plan, the logistics of managing it all, etc? Is their a tool out their that might help with all this?

You could use a service like buysellads.com. They then take care of all of that stuff for you. Not sure though if you need a minimum amount of traffic to be listed in their network.
