Why do you *have* to start a business?

What is is that compels you to start a business of your own? Dreams of freedom? Money? Success? Autonomy? What is the key driver? I mean, you know there are a lot of hurdles and endless hours of work, and no guarantee of succeeding, so why do you feel you still feel you have to do it?

This is a pointless question. Go and do something productive that makes you money.

On the contrary. The answer to this question will make me money. Thus far, I have made $100,000 online, and I am one of those people who "have to" do it, and I know what my motivation is.

Now I am wondering what yours is.

      Why do I wonder?

Because I am making a product that targets you, obviously. So this is basic research

That was and still is the biggest why I am in internet marketing.

I could not imagine my life to be in someone else's hands. No way I am going to live my life where someone tells me when to come to work, when to take a break, when to take a vacation, or anything like that.

I know that everyone's WHY and DREAMS is different, but what's yours? That is what you all need to figure out.

Having that WHY in front of you at all times will help you push forward when things are not going your way.

Never give up and you will succeed.

You're either working your own plan - or you're part of someone else's.

Why rely on other peoples plans to control your success and outcomes. You may fail many times when working your own plan but at least you know that success is also in your control.

Many people take a job because of a misguided sense of security - there's no such thing, so you might as well be driving the bus instead of being a passenger.

No-one else will have your maximum success as their own goal.

I think this is one of my great insights as well.

In addition to that, I love being a "creator" -- when I do programming and writing (no matter if I'm creating the product or the sales material) -- there's a substantial difference between "creating what I've thought up" and "creating what somebody else thought up". Having creative powers, I would rather make my own "dreams" come true, than somebody elses.

I guess what also drives me is "time freedom" -- that I can choose to work less, and spend more time with my kids, if I want to.

So for me, autonomy, freedom, creativity are at least some keywords.

See how we got you to answer your own question? Now you can write that product and sell it to yourself

LOL, yes I do know quite a bit about what my own answers are, but I wanted to hear other peoples views and not get too self-centered

... But if I *do* end up asking for a refund from myself, that is at the very least a pain-less process, I give them no-questions asked

Sten, as a whole, I think we've gotten away from self-sufficiency and self-reliance. Most workers impress me as surrendered to putting in their time so they can finally retire - essentially as a prelude to waiting to die. They have zero ambition, zero drive, zero tolerance for taking any risks, and increasingly with each generation less and less willingness to accept responsibility. The old values are either dead or on life support: things like work ethic, pride of craftsmanship, professionalism are completely alien terms to too many people.

Most of us here are the exceptions to that generalization.

Some of us are primarily interested in taking a hobby or pastime to the next level. They are not the least bit interested in going beyond supplementing their income - which they start out thinking will pay for their hobby or pastime on a higher level.

Some of us have real fire in the belly. Their dreams, their realization of innovations are the thing. Money may or may not play as central a role as others might think - but it's still a good way to keep score.

And a few are completely out of their element. They have no idea what they're doing. They liked to tall tales about huge paydays, and can't figure out why they have to do all that grunt work before they have any chance at making millions. Indeed, there are several extremely successful marketers who like to emphasize how little they knew and how little time or effort they put into this before they high the big time. So that sounds like the lottery ticket they'd like.

I'm sure there are others, but these come immediately to mind.

This is a good question and has a lot to do with potential success or failure.
It's the "have to." As in, you have no choice.

On my First grade report card, my teacher noted "does not play well with others." I didn't know this until after my mother died and I was going through old papers.

The few "jobs" I tried were disasters. I can't work for someone else, end of story.

I didn't start a business early on, I just started building things because they were in my head and I had to get them out. People said "hey, what do you want for that?" And the rest, as they say, is history.

I do what I do because if I didn't I would probably be in a rubber room somewhere. The ideas come too fast and clear to be ignored. I'm just the means they have of manifesting themselves.

I always hated working for others, having a boss, being told when I need to start and finish work, could take breaks etc. I never stuck out jobs always quit after a while and went off travelling the world instead, made sense for me to become my own boss, launch my own business and become location independent.

I guess it depends on how driven you are. It has been shown time and time again that the only way to make REAL money is to start your own business.

Until you are working for yourself you will always be trading hours for dollars while making a fortune for someone else.

Some people prefer to call the shots and be fully responsible for thier success. Many people are more like sheep and prefer to be herded and told what to do, meanwhile someone else is making a living selling the wool right off thier backs!

The guys at the Elevation Group interviewed 20+ millionaires and the one thing they all had in common was that they had started thier own business at some point in thier careers, many started thier businesses for a few thousand dollars or less.

Your always only one good idea away from a million dollars...if you have the gumption to see it all the way through.

You don't HAVE to. In fact, I prefer you don't. So I can get people like you to work for my company and help me build my dream.

The main reason is that business does not limit you to your income - and therefore allows you to live the internet lifestyle. Your income opportunity is infinite. When working for somebody else, you're stuck with a certain paycheck every year. With business, it all depends on you and your business. You can go out and work really hard and make nothing, but you can also go out and make a million dollar business.

I always wanted to be successful, be someone and not just like everybody else..

I always wanted to tell my boss to shut it and I could never imagine myself working for somebody else for another 50 60 years?

When I was first introduced to internet marketing, I found it a "magical" solution to all my financial problems, and I had a LOT!

Later down the road I realized it takes hard work and dedication...guess what? I didn't care.

All I cared about is keep fighting and grow..grow grow grow.

Let me tell you that -

If that parcticular scamming scumbag wouldn't have introduced me to internet marketing?

I would still build a business.

My opinion is that you cannot be truely successful if you are working to make someone else successful.

Obviously some can have what they think is success by doing that, but not I.

  • Aside from gaining money, success and the above things that you have mentioned, one of the reasons why people want to/have to start a business is because it is mainstream. I know it sounds weird, but really, it happens. "They do it, so I should do it as well."
Some people do something not only to gain money, but also to compete. To prove the world that you can do good in that certain field. Competitive people who eat competitions for breakfast have that reason on why they create a business. They just love the competition.

The very reason why I chose to engage in business, is that, I want to learn new things while I work. I want to apply my learnings while I help people all the way.

Gentleman I thank you for putting my thoughts into words. I think one answer to that question is, a man who controls the direction of his own destiny, will not have it controlled by the whims of another. By the starting of his own business is such a deceleration made

Working for someone else was too limiting for me. Where I worked in particular, it was like most people around me had already given up on the idea of ever living an extraordinary life. They were happy to turn up and run out of the door at 5pm. I was bored with the idea of earning "X" amount an hour. When I started trading stocks I noted how the pro traders and people on the board both capitalized. The pro traders made money from the retail crowd. The market makers made money from the retail crowd as well. The people on the board of the companies made money by offloading their shares at the right times, exercising their options and taking hefty salaries. The employees didn't get rich or live a dream lifestyle. In many cases, the CEO and the board did.

Being exposed to all of this was completely alien to me and it made me realise there was so much more to life than just turning up 9-5 or pushing for the next promotion . I come from a background which has no money in my ancestory (other than a gold watchmaker and none of that fortune got passed through the bloodline).

My grandfather worked for 50 years and died with a few hundred pounds to his name.
Then I watched my father get made redundant after 25 years loyal service.
My heart and passion was not in working 9-5. I often wondered why people around me were willing to settle for so little (most of these people "Wished they would win the lottery"- sound familiar? Everyone has different priorities in life, so I make no judgements, but for ME I decided that I wanted to do things on my own terms, not work for someone else to make them rich or for a boss to tell me I was going to be laid-off at a time when I needed to pay the mortgage. NO WAY!

But you know what, it's not all about money it's also about fulfillment, happiness and doing something you are passionate about. Doing this makes me happy - every day is exciting. Working 9-5 being shackled to a desk doing something that I knew I was not my purpose in life, certainly wasn't.

    To quote Jim Rohn:

Most of us think of happiness as something either lost in the past or a peak to be arrived at some distant point in the future (I'll be happy as soon as...). Few understand that happiness can only be experienced in the now. Happiness is activity with purpose. It's love in practice. It's both a grasp of the obvious and an awe of the mysterious."
