How do merchants sell without presell?

I always hear people here saying you need to presell affiliate products to generate meaningful sales becasue if you link directly to the merchant site, people are not 'sold' on the product, so how do merchants sell the products in large numbers?

For example, I have noticed for the products I promote, the merchants also run ad campaigns through Adwords.

To presell an affiliate product, you would preview it and tell the people on YOUR list how the product would help them.

I know that. What I am asking is how everyone here keeps saying how important presell is, so how come merchants link directly to their product sites when they carry out ad campaigns? Obviously they have their own email lists, but I have also seen ads that link directly to the product page.

    Pre-selling builds hype.

Look at large corporations and their products for example. If Sony were to just slap PlayStation 4 on shelves without any kind of warning, their initial sales would sink and any chance they have of breaking a 24 hour record are gone.

I guess you don't have to necessarily pre-sell if you're just trying to scrape a few bucks off of a product, but if you want to build hype, obtain a list and get more initial sales on launch, then pre-selling is absolutely necessary. Not to mention you'll gain the attention of affiliates.

I see what you mean. But something like PS4 doesn't rally need to sell itself because people will already know about it whereas some of these products I am talking about hardly well known, and in fact, I guess quite a lot of the times it will be the first they will have come to know about it.

I suppose this is where a list comes in really handy. When a new product launches, you can presell a fresh product to your list.
