Any Downsides To Using Imac Desktop For IM?

My old dell desktop has had its time so now Im looking for something new.

The imac look caught my eye cause its cute... like me lol

Curious if it will make a difference software wise :confused:

    Not so far for me!

    In fact for IM it's been a bonus. Keynote is fantastic for video creation (much better than powerpoint).

    In fact, slowly but surely all of my staff are begging me to buy them an imac for their desks. (it started off with just me, but now everyone wants in on the act!)

    Sometimes the odd bit of software comes out that has to be windows based, but it's been pretty rare for me, and off the top of my head I can't think of anything that I need to have a PC for.

    So much stuff is web based these days, it really is removing the need to be platform dependent.

    I use Screenflow for screen recording and MS Office is available (although I prefer iWork for desktop publishing).

    TextWrangler and Cyberduck for FTP and text editing and transmission for P2P file sharing if needed.

    All Adobe software (to my knowledge) is available for the iMac, and processor wise the iMac is fine for all of these programs.

    All in all, I love my iMac!

    I have both Mac and PC but use Mac for about 99% of everything I do and much prefer it.

      I've been using a Mac for over 6 years and it's been fine. I have an older Windows laptop that I use to run the odd Windows-only app, but over the last year or two it's been getting less and less use.

      A lot of newer apps are either server-based or are written in Adobe Air, which is cross-platform, so Windows has been less and less necessary for me.

      Just keep in mind that any software you have now won't run on it unless you run it through Windows (which is possible on a Mac). That means buying new versions if you're using paid software like MS Office, Camtasia, etc.

      Most have Mac versions, or there are equivalents available, but they still have to be bought.

    When I started learning IM I purchased Windows 7 for my Mac, thinking I would need it for all of the Windows programs out there. About 6 months ago I removed the Windows partition and have been doing everything on my Mac.

    you can get way more bang for your buck buying a pc.

    My laptop is 12gig ram, 1tera byte hard drive and got it for $800.

    Can only imagine how dank of a desktop you can get at a cheaper price.

      12gb ram / 1tb hd for $800?

      I just wanted to see a link to this laptop.

      HP is the manufacturer. What model HP is it? I like to on occasion build custom PCs over at Newegg because after January, I plan on getting a brand new CPU.

      I just wanted to see what model was selling those kind of specs at $800.

    Go for the Mac you can do pretty much everything you need to with it. And for the odd windows only programs you can get Parallels Desktop or VMWare to run windows applications simultaneously inside OSX.

    Or you can use bootcamp to install Windows 7/XP/8 on your mac, but this is only necessary is you are planning on gaming on your iMac.

    So to answer your question there are no downsides, except maybe the price.

    If you plan on using link building software then stick with a PC. Or, use VMWare or parallels. A lot of the manufacturing links software are PC only.

    Otherwise, I feel I can find everything I need on a Mac, program wise.

    It is true that you can buy wicked PC's for half the price of a Mac. Mac's are waaay overpriced.

    But, I really like a mac and I've yet to get a virus on mine yet. If you think about it, it's something you will likely use HEAVILY for a few years, so it's worth the extra money if you really like it.

      I use a 27" Imac too, also a Macbook Air and 17" Powerbook plus an old G5 c/w Cinema 21" screen. Only because I use them in the offline business, not sure I would if was using them just for on-line or IM the reason I have the 17" PB and G5 is that they are working well after 5 years use not sure that the same could be said for PC's and laptops, (although I've had to get 2 replacement batteries for the PB at crazy prices - compared to regular laptops)
      But another issue is that the depreciation is just crazy, the G5 and screen cost me £3700 + and I'd be lucky to get maybe £400.

      If I was starting out for IM on balance i'd probably opt for a PC with a decent monitor and / or high spec laptop and even if had to put them in a skip after lots of use would be better off financially. Also Macs can be irritating when I have to run Parallels for some products, although a few run on Adobe Air though and that's so much better.
      I used to be a die-hard Apple fan, love their products but have never owned an Iphone (Prefer my Samsung S3) but I've changed opinion a little over the past couple of years. The level of service and innovation is not as it used to be, also they are updating products far more often than previously and maybe Windows now is better than in the days of "98 (which is when I was converted to Apple) was sick of blue screens, fatal exception errors, viruses etc but maybe all this is not an issue anymore? (I've never had a virus on a Mac ever!) Not sure I would revert back to PC / Windows, hopefully the gear I have will last a while longer untll I make the decision.
      I guess it all depends on budget first and foremost. Bet this hasn't helped at all - sorry

    I also use my iMac for 99% of my IM related tasks. It simply is a much better option then a PC when it comes to productivity, ease of use, and security.
