Why do MOST people FAIL at Blogging?

According to searchengineland, MOST BLOGS FAIL. That's the hard reality. Sure, many dash out of the starting line but after a few months, most are no longer being updated regularly. Wait a few more months and only a few are still being updated.

Still, when it comes to marketing, blogging is quite an effective means of getting email leads and sales. Blogging helps you direct the reader's attention and get them to think about what you want them to think about. Sadly, too many marketers PISS AWAY the power of blogging by failing to BRAND.

To be successful at mainstream whitehat blogging (I don't consider autoblogs mainstream), you have to BRAND. There are simply just way too many other blogs out there that snipe keywords and aim to make some quick cash using adsense and other contextual ad platforms. If you want your blog to become a DESTINATION, you have to brand.

What puzzles me is why bloggers refuse to step up and develop their blogs as BRANDS? It's not like it is a big mystery. You only need to OWN your blog-put your personality front and center.

There's a magic word in blogging. This word is *I*. That's right-you have to insert YOURSELF in the picture. You can't rattle on about things in an impersonal way and signal to your reader that you don't really have your HEART in the game. Throw yourself into the subject matter. Blogging is PERSONAL. It's all about you. Listen-if people wanted to read news, they'd go to CNN or FT or some other established news outlet instead of some rinky dink blog. NO-they came to YOUR blog to read what YOUR spin is. So stop merely rewriting news but GET ON IT like white on rice and ENGAGE your reader.

Everything you do is BRANDING. From your theme to your word choice to how you interact with your site visitors-everything reflects on your CHARACTER. So act with care. Are you communicating the right values? Can people see by your actions that they can TRUST you? Can people see by your actions that you have NO conflict of interest and would mislead or rip them off?

Branding is all about running a marathon-not a sprint. If you have a get rich quick mentality, it might work against you if it leads you to destroy your brand through sales short cuts and lies. Your brand-your character-is at stake. Act accordingly. Protect it with your life.

I am 3 months into blogging this is my blog larrysincomeblog.com

I work hard on my blog, trying to write good content once every 2 days, I also write content for guest posts. I normally get around 2 guest posts out a week. I still don't get much traffic but I enjoy it and I hope to see some success within the year. I don't think about money, I'm looking to make this my long term goal. I want to grow a big readership and then maybe start monetizing.

Alternatively, he can use digital prizes to get people to his site. Ultimately, its all about building a powerful list that he can send updates to. The list provides nice traffic surges as well as more opportunities to viralize his content.

Good point. Low blog volume/high impact blogging depends on niche and how you work that niche. Usually, if a niche doesn't have too many competitors, you can get buy with producing a few 'pillar blog posts' that establish your authority in the niche and you don't have to update for quite some time.

      That's very sound.

The difference between the losers and winners often is that the former quit much too soon and the latter never do, so thinking long term is much more likely to get you to your goal than thinking short-term.

And if you enjoy doing what you are doing that's so much much better.

You hit the nail on the head. It's all about PERSISTENCE. One way people can stick to a game plan much longer is to measure SUCCESS in terms other than just money. If you're still in the early phases of executing your income blueprint, measure success by how much content you post (or advance post) on your blog daily, how many comments you get, how many pages each average reader reads, etc. By building on these different metrics, you build up the ultimate metric-revenue. People who QUIT only focus on SALES or REVENUE. They don't lay the ground work with other metrics so they can ensure their long term success.

Agreed. If you aren't putting your personality into each and every post, how are you going to make people remember your blog? Most of the time, people are going to find similar blogs/posts on multiple sites offering the same content. The post that gets read the most is the most entertaining or in-depth one where you get to experience the author's character.

Exactly. It's all about TURNING YOURSELF into your blog's content. Your personality. Your quirky way of looking at the world. Your individual voice. Your CHARACTER.

    Yep - a few must-have's

    1. A topic with demand/buzz...I have started dozens of blogs over the last few years, what I've learned first hand is that your topic and market make a big difference in terms of attention, interest, participation, etc... If you do a good job of targeting your market and hit on highly emotional topics then your blog will grow and produce to a much greater extent.

    2. Yes - personality...take a stand and find your voice. That may take time which is ok - in the meantime just post. Write something each day and begin to find your voice and your value in the marketplace. It will come as you see which posts get more interest and you see more comments

    3. Have a sales funnel that leads naturally from your blog. I know some very popular and successful bloggers that hardly earn a dime because they don't know how to monetize all of their traffic. Early on in the process, have a way to pull your readers into relevant giveaways (to get them on your list) and to relevant promotions. You can do both - blog and sell...

      Exactly. Here's a classic example.

As any newb adsense blogger knows, DEBT CONSOLIDATION and STRUCTURED SETTLEMENTS pay out a lot of money per click. Many marketers build blogs around these hoping to snipe some traffic from keywords related to these niches. No passion. No engaging quality content. No community. As a result, the blogs just sit there passively trying to filter traffic that blunders on to the blog. Totally passive.

Compare that to a blog that is written in a passionate and engaging way that actively cultivates a community around the content. The members themselves spread the blog's links and a dynamic interactive traffic base is created. Moreover, the blogger's passion is translated into an actual BRAND in the particular niche he is targeting.

Because most people dont have anything truly interesting to talk about on a recurring basis, which is what blogging is all about.

  • I'm one of those who believe that if making money is your only reason for blogging you will fail. As a reader, I can sense if the writer isn't really invested or passionate about the topic. And bloggers who are passionate about their niches are more likely to update their blogs with engaging and interesting content. It's also easier to make money when you already have a following of people who share the same passions and beliefs as you do. There's nothing wrong about making money but I think it's ultimately better to make money doing something you love that doing something you hate simply because you want to make money.

Very true. Readers can sense if a blogger is just going through the motions instead of actually trying to build a community. In a very real sense, each and every blog is really a community of interests. If managed right with the right amount of updates AND direct personal appeals made by the blogger through blog comment replies on his blog, the blogger stands apart from the competition. It also helps if the person makes FREQUENT references in newsletter messages to stuff happening on the blog.

You nailed the key element though-PASSION.

Most people fail with blogging for the same reasons as most businesses fail.

    Some of the reasons are:
    -Not understanding the targeted market.
-Inability to build trust with the readers.
-Not having a clear, achievable, and individual vision.
-Not identifying needs that people have.
    -Lack of authenticity.
    -Insufficient hunger and persistence.
    -Not building high quality relationships.
    -Unwillingness to help others.
    -Ignorance.

    Just to name a few.

You've got know what keeps you broke and what you must do to succeed in your targeted market.

In your opinion, what explains this laziness? I think a lot of it is fear. Most people want the BEST things in life. They are just afraid of the pain of rejection and failure. That's why it's easier to be in a comfort zone. The problem is-the more we stay in our zone, the smaller the zone gets. It keeps shrinking until we feel TRAPPED. By then, it's too late.

I notice that a lot with NEWS REWRITE blogs. These guys will summarize tech news or other specialized niches' news in one sentence and the rest of the blog is about WHAT THEY THINK about the particular piece of news. Of course, there are links inside the blog post to previous posts. This makes for a personality-driven, passion-driven reading experience and if the blogger knows how to work a crowd, pushes the reader deeper and deeper into the guts of the blog. With each page the reader loads, the reader is BRANDED by both the content/editorial strategy and the blog's overall personality.

Good points, Franko. To add more details to your observation, one very common thing I notice is that when newbie marketers start they either start with a LOT OF different projects which they put MINIMAL effort in. Alternatively, they start with ONE project but they start looking for another project once the first project hits a roadblock.

Blogging is good training for any marketer because it is all about branding and PERSISTENCE. It's all about being in the game over the long haul and committing to learning what it takes to be successful. Also, it is a good opportunity to stare FAILURE in the face and UNDERSTAND that failure is actually a teacher. Instead of turning away in disgust, we should look failure in the face and learn from it. We just might find a stronger CHARACTER in ourselves.

I totally agree with this statements. I've been there and only I could say is that I lost a bunch of my valuable time. Now I know I should concentrate on one project at a time and scale it up and make it deeper and deeper. Yes, it's true when you face failure, disappointment, desperation, lack of results it hurts and it's tough! Most people can't bare those feelings and run back in their comfort zone. What I've learned is that if you want to succeed in something you should get out of your comfort zone and do things you never did. At first you will feel discomfort, uncertainty, lack of self confidence but in time you will get better and better and after some time your efforts will pay off. When it becomes easy you should get again out of comfort zone to have greater results. With your example you could influence many peoples lives in a positive way.

Thank you Writeaway for your tips, they are very motivating and helpful !

This is a very interesting topic you have raised. I believe that most people who decide to start blogging don't have a long term game plan. I shall explain, what is the purpose of the blog? To give information, educate, or to make money or is it as a hobby?
Personally, I can update my blog regularly, because not only am I passionate about my niche, I also have various ways of creating very attractive article titles. I have a way of researching hot selling topics in my niche which I write about on my blog. Then all I do is place suitable links to successful products on my blog thereby getting sales from affiliate products. There has to be a streamlined approach to blogging rather than having so many blogs to update daily, I just maintain 2 that are doing extremely well.

However I'd say this is too general reasoning, here's more obvious cause of failure:
      • BAD keyword research - is the MAIN reason why most of bloggers fail, without a doubt
      • Fail in engaging the readers
      • Inconsistency
      • Too lazy to post on regular basis

    Now I'm no expert. I have had plenty of successful websites. Very few blogs with actual readership though, as most of my successes have been for product based websites and the blogs were just filler content. But I would say three things contribute to a failed blog;

1 - They Suck and Writing.

Doesn't mean that they have horrible English, or anything like that. That is an obvious reason for a failed blog. I mean that they just are not able to write in an interesting way. I have always believed that you have to write a blog about something you are passionate about. If you are not passionate about it, it will shine through in your writing, and make it hard for you to find consistent readership. It sucks but the fact of the matter is that some people are just not gifted writers. They probably are great at other things, and should try to incorporate what they are good at into their work. If you suck at writing, don't start a blog because it will never work out.

2 - Not Enough Work Ethic

Building readership takes time. My email lists took years to build. Blogs, unless you are able to get some viral content on there, should take months and years to build to. There are going to be times when you are writing your heart out only to have 50 unique visitors read your article. Most of which probably skimmed it, and no comments. You have to be willing to put in the work and the fact of the matter is that most people just aren't.

    3 - Their Marketing Sucks

Building blog readership is marketing just like anything else. You are selling yourself as an expert in something. If it's about football, you need to have a brand that is associated with your blog. Is this deep, statistical analysis of football? Is it a fun, light hearted, beers with the boys type of blog? Same with any subject. Your blog has to have an identity that is portrayed. It's part of the blogs marketing. Even if that identity is standard for your industry. If people don't know what kind of site you have, you have not marketed yourself to a specific niche within the given industry correctly.

    I have a blog: itrypoetry.blogspot.com.

I have no optimization, no 'money making' desire for it, but do I get traffic? yes.

It's because I just write stupid poems for the sake of writing stupid poems.

I did it to make fun of my brother that take the medium of poetry way too seriously. So i made a blog of the antithesis.

So I do it for fun. Not as a job.

    And that's why it's successful.

Thank you. The bold and italicized text above cannot be emphasized enough. Blogging is a constant experiment at trying to boost the effectiveness of your message. Your visitors are your partners in that experiment. By measuring your success ONLY in terms of money, you are missing the point of blogging. Money is a by-product. The real product is self-discovery and growth.

You wear many hats when you blog: publisher, creator, engineer, marketer, analyst, psychologist, etc. Many people think this is a hassle. This is actually a key part of what makes blogging FUN.

I'm thinking most blogs wouldn't fail if it wasn't considered as the primary source of traffic. If it was thought of as a 4th project amongst your other successful projects... it would become successful over time all by itself.

Yes. I agree with your thoughts above. It's all about branding yourself and become an authority in your niche. Another thing is that, you must know what you are doing and you have the passion for it.

But in my case, I am having a problem in branding myself worldwide because I am not a native English Speaker. How can I brand myself having this weakness?

Try videos. I have seen some videos on WF that featured marketers with a thick accent. It doesn't seem to get in the way of them making money and building a brand. Sometimes, a nice accent HELPS YOU because you stand out from the typical marketer with perfect English. Remember: branding means SELLING YOUR CHARACTER. It is your character that is in the spotlight. Can they trust you? Do you know your stuff? Can you deliver the value they are looking for? Those are the questions you need to answer.

I have been blogging since 2007, and it's actually how I made my first dollar online. Even when I tried other Internet marketing ventures, I always went back to blogging.

I recently started using Dragon NaturallySpeaking to create my blog content. I found that it helps add more personality to my posts, as I pretend I am just chatting with a friend rather than typing something formal for others to see. I agree that putting yourself in your blog posts is a very important for success.

i absolutely agree. many people think they quickly push the button and 10 minutes later they have a blog and therefore business up and running. they don't want to invest money (which is ok but if you don't want you most probably can't make some). and they expect their words to magically turn in money for them - with a few posts. i´m doing business online now for 4.5 years - counting my fails even longer (5.5 years) and it´s a question of the power of endurance. if you can keep doing what you do you'll make it, no matter what. but getting a business out of the baby shoes is damn hard work and many people are not willing to spend so much time, money and effort upfront to make just a little in return

Most blogs fail because most people expect profits from day 1 without putting in a lot of work initially.

Lots of good statements here. I am working on my 2 blogs for last 3 months. I have written a lot of content. Some will be published right away, some will be saved for later. My first blog will be my expertise and my second will be my passion.
I plan to put a lot work in them and I do plan to brand them. I will not give up after few months and I hope I will earn some money eventually.
First blog will be out in the middle of the January and second will be out in the beginning of the February.
I am positive about this blogging thing and I have this feeling that it might work. I hope I will not get disappointed.
But I must say I feel sooo damn gooood when I finish writing one big article cause I know I have achieved something, I made one more step forward. It feels great and thats why I am positive about it. That's why I know that I wont quit if I don't get what I want in first few months.

I believe that most people fail because they don’t have real knowledge and they are not real writers. They cannot keep a blog for long.

Writing a blog post per day or a few posts per week for years is not a simple matter.

Well I've not been thinking about the money as such but I would love to make my blog successful. Grow a great readership and provide people with a real solution to help them make money online with websites and blogs. I like to talk about my knowledge so far on how I have done.

If my blog become successful then my next goal is to make my own product. I want to make videos showing people how to set up a blog from scratch then promote it in the right way.

If I can become successful by helping people then that would make me feel even better.
I love blogging and that is why I have not quit, if I were someone else I would have most likely quit by now.

I've been at it for 3 months although ranking well in the make money/ Internet marketing niche is fairly difficult although my blog is still new too.

    It will take more time

Although I did not start yet I realize that this statement is true, but if you blog about something you love there should not be any problems about writing content. So far I have more than 40 articles ready. 20 per blog. I plan to have 10-15 per blog in reserve so I can upload them on a weekly basis.

My blogs won't be about IM or any sort of money making niche. I plan to post 2 articles per week at each blog. That's four articles per week.
I think in my niches this will be enough. I checked my competitors and they are not writing more than 2 posts a week.
I know there will be times when it will be tough and when I won't have ideas or persistance to write, but that's normal.

Well i guess most blog fail because they started it all for money but not passion. It's very hard to sustain without the burning passion on topic.

I agree. When I learned about all this blogging thing I had an idea to make blog in health niche. Cause health sells. But I am not a doctor and I don't know anything about it.
People on this forum told me to write about my passions and expertise.
They were right. If I started blogs about something that I don't know anything about, that would be such a pain to do.
I have a burning passion for one topic and expertise in another, and that will be my two blogs. I feel happy when I finish 1000 word article. I can only imagine how happy will I be when I publish them next month.
And when first bucks come rollin in, I will jump from joy.

Scott, take your time. I suggest you lay out a well-thought out plan. As the old saying goes, 'measure twice, cut once.' Plan it out right. List out the following:

      Who is your target audience?
Where does this audience hang out online?
What kind of topics are your target readers interested in?
What social media trending topics are they interested in?

      Who are your competitors?
      What are they doing right?
      What are they doing wrong?

What value are you going to propose?
How will you differ from your competitors?
How will you appeal to your target audience?
What kind of online identity will your brand use as a vehicle?
What values do you want to pursue for your brand?

Blogging is not as easy as it looks. Only people who love what they write are the ones who keep on blogging. I agree with the stats mentioned in OP, I was at the point where I would lose the motivation to write anything after a while. But since I started writing about what I like, I want to keep writing.

  • Also, blogs fail because they compete with the known blogs with the same niche. They think that they can easily beat the known blogs in that instant. Some bloggers also just copy paste old articles and blog posts for their blogs to have new contents. It is just not right.

      Good points everyone...

Sounds like from this post it's all about

      1. Having 1 blog that you update regularly
      2. You put your heart and passion into your blog
      3. Your blog is about engaging not about money
      4. Take your time and build your blog and build relationships
      5. Don't be scared to express yourself and let people get to know you...

All sounds good on paper, but many people who create blogs make them for money. Most people are not in a great financial state to be able to blog for fun. Most people don't have enough time while working a job to blog.

And the big one is for majority of people, understanding how to create a blog is like learning combinatorics...(Look it up ) When I talk to people about blogging its like I am speaking foreign language...

So the people who know how to blog, know about keywords, know about engagement, know about building relationships, and know about monetizing a blog are US IM'ers hence why many fail.

The truth is...Readers easily get bored when reading, even if you have great contents. Your blog needs to be interactive with your readers in order for you to get more reads, sometimes you need to incorporate questions on your blogs. This is also one way of building a network or a community, because readers can interact with each other about their point of view about the topic.
