  Maybe so...either way, the snowball effect is pretty amazing. The replies
  in the mac rumors forum are quite funny...the one where they are operating
  on a PC to make Iphones and the dude with the magnifying glass that said she
  was testing an unreleased 6G or whatever.
  
  I have been behind the scenes of viral campaigns where someone will mention
  doing something like this to create buzz. It's more like a unique sense of dry humor
  from a marketer or marketing company.

  Very true. I think that's one reason it's got such great feedback overall on a subconscious level and many in the webosphere have mentioned that, so the whole viral buzz has a positive vibe around it.
