Selling your software for $0? Good results or bad?

Hi all,

I'm curious to find out from other software developers what results they've had with promoting their products through places like TrialPay or other JV's where you 'give your software away', but still get paid for it.

At the moment, I'm finding that I'm converting around 11%. Is this low/medium/high?

I'm trying various options and offering a freebie where I don't actually give it away seemed to be a good way to go. I'm not sure whether or not to remove the option or not, given that it produces better results than a straight buy now offer, albeit at a slightly lower return in pure $ terms.

Your thoughts?

Thanks,
Will.

I make an extra $3,000 per month avg. from giving away products with trial pay. my conversion rate is around 5% but don't just place the offer on the same page of your "buy now" button.

Thank you...good tip. At the moment I have all the options on the same page. Will change it immediately!

I'd say 11% conversions sounds great.

I'd test that change very carefully ... you certainly don't want your conversions dropping from 11% to 5%.

By the way, do you mean 11% of sales are through trialpay ... or 11% of visitors complete the trialpay offer ?

11% of TrialPay users convert. As a percentage of visits, from the short time the site's been up, it looks like it's around 7-8% of visits to the 'Buy' page have opted for TrialPay, and of those, 11% have completed an offer. I'll need to keep an eye on it after I actually launch, though.
