Spam traffic via URL openers?

I've just purchased a few websites and now looking at the stats. Unfortunately the traffic looks a bit spammy - a lot of visitors coming in via URL opener sites. I'd never even heard of these before : you can paste a bunch of URLs in them and open all the pages at once. So what's the underlying trick behind wanting to do that?? Just trying to determine what type of traffic it is coming in on those.. Thanks
