Marketing to the video gamers niche

A lesson I learned in life is to ask questions to those who are knowledgable as often, you yourself can simply miss the obvious or most beneficial solution.

Some of you may already know investors throw some money at me earlier this year to build a mobile phone app for Video Gamers: Wewanalay. It helps connect gamers and help them schedule gaming sessions amongst other things. Really simply but cool...

We will be releasing a pretty good beta update tonight so I am finally in a position to market it... I even have a decent four figures budget to use for marketing, but we would like to keep acquisition costs as low as possible (colleagues in other fields have an average of 0.06c per user cost which we hope to match).

In all honesty, I'm a bit lost at where to start. I would love to try some Gaming related lists but have no idea where to start finding them. Lists swaps have none of them (they are all IM related) - and i've looked through the JV section here with no joy.

I'm sure with plenty of people in the video gaming niche there must be tons if useful ways to market to them, but I need specifics like these lists here are great etc...

What I have already done:
  • Made lists of blogs that review video games apps (We have about 150 on the list, I approached about 50 of the smaller ones and no one replied to us - suggesting our approach may be wrong)
  • Made lists of youtubers influential in the gaming arena (not approached any yet)
  • Beginnings of a PPC campaign- we have Google reps helping with this and will go live soon.
  • Great personal contacts with gaming journalists - however we only get one shot at publicity with them, and therefore need a few more weeks before we get there...

My issue is that although I seem to have done something, what I have done thus far has not worked. Maybe you guys can help me refine my marketing so that it finally starts converting. (The home page mentioned above is being A/B tested so you all may see slightly different versions)

We need 10,000 new users by mid Jan...

Let the ideas begin!

Maybe you could try contacting YouTubers who have a big subscriber base in the video gaming field. Perhaps they wouldn't mind endorsing your blog or getting involved. It's a tough niche to market to, but if you do it right, they're big spenders.

We have a list of Youtubers, but we would not use them until we have a larger fan base to make it worthwhile...

The point is, i do not believe it is that hard of a fan base to master...
Maybe I'm just making rookie mistakes...

No no, it's always hard when starting in a new niche. I would like to see a massive thread posted in a few different gaming forums telling people about it.

You mentioned using google ads. Do you mean adwords?

Have you looked into admob at all?

Google owns them, but they're separate from adwords. You can run ads within apps, which may help you target your audience a little bit (although their targeting is pretty basic right now). The main reason I suggest them is that you can get clicks all day for about 0.05.

You can target iphones, and ipads as well as androids and android tablets.

          What about facebook ads?

Targeting gamers in facebook is pretty simple (though I assume you would be looking at a pretty high CPC).

Have you considered doing any media buys with online gaming forums that cater to PC MMOs and console games?

Those are some of the first things that come to mind. There are a few people I know who are masters with paid traffic, but they'll more than likely charge you a pretty penny for their help.

Lol ask a simple question and people assume you are a newbie!

We have a detailed marketing plan - but it hasn't worked thus far and that is why I am putting the question out here. Marketing of course is a lot of trial and error and improvement...

We have approached game forum owners, but we have not been able to convince them to work with us yet. Maybe we need to change the message, so perhaps someone who has done this successfully can help suggest a good angle?

    @Ryan

Yes to most of those - however thanks for the mobile ads mentions - totally missed that off my marketing road map...

As for the media buys, i would like to try that - my issue is i have tried to discover where to buy and haven't found the right answer yet.
