Making changes to a PLR product

I have got a PLR product where the licence says I can make changes and resell the product. It says I can also claim authorship of the product.

The licence says that I cannot claim copyright for it.

I want to make some quite dramatic changes to the product and then resell it.

If my changes are so dramatic, almost making it a completely different product then surely I CAN claim copyright for it as it would become a product of my own work.

Am I right in this assumption?

It depends how much you change it I guess.

But if you are going to dramatically change it then why not just create your own product from scratch so you have no problems going forward.

It all depends on multiple factors. But you may copyright register it if you've changed it enough because in the end of the day, the person who doesnt even care about the authorship of a product will never worry about it. He is not allowing copyright registration for his PLR because then it wont be his offcourse (and its practically impossible in that case). But when you change it enough, there will be virtually no problem.

    Hope that helped you.

    In general, this is correct.

When they say you cannot copyright the PLR work, it usually means you cannot copyright "as is".

The work is not copyright to you, it is is copyright to the original author. Just because the author offers PLR licensing rights to the work, does not mean he gives up copyright to the work.

But, since it is sold as PLR and you are allowed to change it, rebrand it and put your own name on it, any work you create from the original PLR work could be copyright to you.

I say "could" because it depends on the details of the PLR license, what the changes were and how different the new work is from the original PLR.

Also, I am not a trademark/copyright attorney and will deny anything I have said in a court of law.

In order to copyright the new work, you'll need to make sure it is completely rewritten. Anything you leave untouched will NOT be coprightable to you.

To avoid the issue, you could read the PLR product as research, check out some websites on the topic for additional information, then write your own product from scratch. Even if you use most of the information from the PLR product, putting it in your own words and adding additional information ought to change it enough to make it yours.
