Something new for marketers

Facebook is testing a new feature where you can send a message directly to the Facebook inboxes of people you don't know... for a dollar.

And you can continue sending messages directly to their inbox for free until they send one of your messages to spam.

How is this going to affect marketers? A new form of getting leads and building a Facebook list without opt ins?

Or is Facebook just getting desperate.

Here's the link if you guys haven't already heard about it.

  • This sounds like another desperate tactic by Facebook to earn more cash. I wouldn't dig this one. A question, though. If you pay $1, does that mean you can send messages to all strangers? Or does the $1 apply to one person only? If it's the latter, then nope, I'm not interested in paying Facebook any hard-earned dollars just for the sake of messaging strangers. There are tons of alternative ways anyway (not to mention free).

At a dollar-per-person, it is unlikely to ever truly be profitable. Who will spend the time to make sure that is definitely a person who wants their offerings, individually, one by one? Forget that, you're better off getting 1000s of free hits a day through actual traffic.

Hold on a minute there GMFC. Facebook ain't retarded. I think they believe we'll figure out a way to make this profitable. $1 per view. Highly targeted view. So, $2.50 per lead, perhaps? Maybe, just maybe this could work.

Well, I'm not saying there is absolutely no possibility to turn this into something beneficial. But as far as I have observed on LinkedIn (which, btw, offers the same feature), the strategy doesn't seem to be beneficial at all. But I don't know, Facebook and LinkedIn has its different factors. Let's see. Nice idea by the way.

Twill be interesting to say the least. If someone has a bit of spare cash to blow, perhaps it is possible to optimize this in such a way you can use Facebook as your list... Interesting.

If people start sending me marketing messages, I'll sent them all to the spam folder.

Just my 2 cents. If Pinterest offered something to like this (not sure how) I would go for it. Pinterest targetted viewers would be amazing. But I'm not sure how it would work? It's not exactly a message that you would send to members but perhaps a promo of pinboards to certain individuals who have expressed interest in your said niche? Pets? Beauty? Celeb gossip?

So Facebook is OK with SPAM as long as you pay them for it?!

Yes and No. As of the present moment, this pretty much sums it up. However, the whole thing is still on trial mode and is subjected to change or even removal. Maybe it will be permanent, maybe not.
