few of the posts below have suggested that it is risky to register such domain names. [registeting domain names on celebrities names]

In my opinion if worse come to worse, one can always give it away to them or sale it back to them on reasonable price. Also if the trouble comes, simply don't sale it. If you don't sale it, no one can prosecute you for registering any sort of domain names.

In the above case, it wasn't the person mentioned who bought those domain names from me but a third party in US.

I think one has to take a bit risk and make bold decision to make money.

For argument sake; Warriors, Is it really that risky to be doing so..?

Thanks

Congrats on that sale. Hope you have many more.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Motivational. You're quite the opportunist, I think you'll go far.
    • [ 2 ] Thanks
  • Congratulations. This sounds like one of the "push button" ways to earn money with some exchange of emails.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • You should watch 60 minuets, I found a lot of domains from there !! Just have Godaddy or what ever provider you use at the ready !!!
    • [ 2 ] Thanks
  • That's great. However without raining on your parade some public figures/celebs have sued for their domain name. The argument goes they believe you are using their brand to make money.

    • Simple answer to that would be, when they come knocking, just give it to them , chuck it upto a risk of doing business.

  • That's really sweet! Just goes to show you a little bit of "doing" actually goes a long way. Congrats!

  • Oh My God, that is really insane. I cant believe how much powerful luck is. I wish you repeat this success again in future. Congratulations for this time and good luck for your future :-)

    • Merry Xmas. You were lucky and success carries a dose of that.
  • Opportunism at its best nothing wrong with that in my book. A bit cheesy, but valid.
  • Pretty nice story, although seen as how EMD and PMD are taking a pounding I think this value is questionable. However just like anything it's worth what someone is willing to pay for it!

Congratulations and best of luck rolling out this strategy.

  • Great idea!

Yes, there will be new famous people popup here and there, and it will provide great opportunities.
  • You are really smart. Congratulations on your sale, you deserve it!
Although this technique is never a guarantee, and you have to risk it. But then, every marketing technique in the internet has no guarantees. You just chose a more risky path, so you deserve the cash. Grats again!
  • Nice story man, congrats , was those domains filled with content ?

  • I wish I had registered 'psy.com'.

I could have sold it to porn companies or a Korean popstar.
    • [ 2 ] Thanks
  • That is great. Though it sounds difficult to replicate. What is the chances of someone contacting you offering a high fee after you buying some cheap domains.

How did you decide which 7 domains to choose? Were they just variations of her name?
    • [1] reply
    • The domain names were random selection of her name along with .com, .net, .org

when you buy a domain name from domain registrar, they are all cheap, now when there is a demand for some domain names, people will pay higher prices for it depending on the demand of the domain name. I presumed the domain names registered would be used to launch some sort biography sites for the lady / and also may be a foundation named after the lady. So that' why they bought them on higher prices,, good for me,, isn't it
  • Congrats on your sale. Fantastic ROI. These websmarts are going to be very useful for you. However, I'd advise you not to get carried away and think that's all it takes.

You'd need to come up with a system/business model based around your success to replicate it otherwise it will just be a matter of time before your write this off as a one time thing.

Unless of course, you're content with it being a one-time thing.
  • Congrats!!! Now its your turn to make those dollar count. Invest wisely and make more money online...
  • Now that's inspiring, congrats! and here I was being overly cautious of infringing on someone's copyright.

I explicitly avoid picking domains with celebrity names, guess it doesn't hurt to take a little risk after all.
  • Congrats and that's awesome, but I feel like you are leaving out some information...

You were contacted how? They went to one of the URL's, saw that the domain name was taken and then contacted you??

Did you change the homepages to reflect that the 7 domain names were for sale?

    etc.

    • Domain whois gives all the info you need. Even with private whois it is still possible to send email to the owner of the domain.

  • nicely done! congrats, now go buy some more!
  • Congrats on your sale and profit! Thats why I like to trade with domains

I would just add, TM and personal names could be risky investment. You had luck this time and thats great.

  • Congrats! I guess,I got her name
  • Just as a quick note, most Asians aren't going to sue to get a domain name. Just isn't in the culture around here (unlike the West and especially America).

  • If you happened to watch that singing show The X Factor the other day, at the end of each act they would show the singers URL so you could check out more on that person.

Well, it looks like someone smart like you grabbed all the hot singers exact match domains because every singers URL was TheirNameOfficial.com instead of TheirName.com

I've made a ton of money from these hot singing shows like American Idol, XFactor, and the Voice because they give you future stars that no one has done a single second of marketing for. You can hop on that buzz and piggyback it all the way to the bank.

I don't buy the domain names myself, I usually create a Fan Page around the top singers at the last few weeks of the show and use FB PPC ads to fill them up. The click throughs are ridiculous because of the television buzz that happens the night before.

It typically takes a couple months after the show before the singers release their albums, but when they do, you have a giant list of superfans who want it.

I'm sure domains would work the same. Even the Xfactor used TheirNameOfficial.com, any of those people that make it big will eventually want their exact match domain.

    • Great Feedback, Thanks for that.

Do you create Face Book fan pages for each of them or is it a single page for all the contestants?
How much ideally do you spend on FaceBook PPC to bring fans to that page.

Looking forward to hear from you. Thanks Again
