Sell your websites for only $5 Listing Fee?

I know that Flippa recently changed their listing fee (not sure if it's temporary or not) to $9, which is cool. But it made me curious. So I was googling flippa alternatives and after quite some time, I stumbled upon a site called fiveasite.com (no affiliation) that appears to be like the Fiverr of website flipping.

That is, they only charge a listing fee of $5. That's nuts! Has anyone seen something like this done before? Obviously the site is very new, but it does have several sites listed for sale already and I wonder if you guys think this might take off...?

Oops, forgot to say that they claim not to charge any success fee on top of that. Crazy or brilliant??

They are new to the market and charge a lower listing fee + possibly a lower percentage earned from a sale. This is not new at all and makes sense...

It makes a lot of sense from a marketing perspective. The zero commission on successful sales might be temporary. However, the $5 base price on listings is probably permanent due to their domain choice It's all about building a critical mass. Good move on their part. If they can do a good job filtering the sites on offer for income verification, they can get more buyers.

Interesting (and thanks for posting it). I hadn't heard of it - and I buy and sell quite a few domain-names.

I guess it's going to depend on whether enough potential buyers know about it? Which is going to depend on their publicity/promotion plans/budget?

The "first mover advantage" (I'm not using this phrase too literally, in this context!) is sometimes overwhelming, and it can be difficult for others - without really substantial funding - to compete? (This was the case with Fiverr, I think: there was a whole raft of later competitors, none of whom has any traffic worth talking about).

So ... as a regular seller of domain-names, am I going to use it? It depends. To me, it's the same issue as my answer to "What do I have to do with my new article directory to make it one that you're willing to submit articles to?" My answer is always "Yes, of course I'll submit my articles there ... as soon as it's the one that every publisher has heard of and instinctively goes to first, to source the content they need, but until then you'll understand why I have to continue using Ezine Articles?". I'm kind of feeling the same about this: I'll sell domain-names there when it's where people instinctively go to buy them. However cheap it is, if the buyers aren't there, it's no use to me. The potential problem for them is that a huge number of people with domain-names for sale are perhaps going to feel exactly that, so they have a real mountain to climb. Just "thinking aloud" ...

I don't know! Time will tell? We should probably be wishing them well, I think, because "service-provider competition" is "good for the market"?

Don't worry about it because the $9 price is for "turnkey" sites and Flippa gets you in the end with an enormous 15% success fee on it, so the actual total listing price is not a bargain at all. In fact, it will cost you more to use the $9 listing fee if your site sells for more than $200.

Seems like some of the current auctions are fakes. I guess they have to do something to make the site look used and start getting visitors. Good luck to them.

First of all ANYBODY can put up a site like this by simply installing a script that imitates Flippa. When you list with Flippa, you're getting a TON of viewers with credit card in hand, ready to buy. Does fiveasite.com have an established audience? If not, it makes no difference how little they charge you - it's a waste of money. When you list your properties on such sites, you're not paying for a "listing" - you're paying for the pool of buyers they bring to your listing.

The question begs to be asked, "Would one consider paying more than Flippa's Fees for better traffic and buyers?"

We seem to lose sight of the fact that you get what you pay for. This new site can not possibly charge you any success fee simply because your success in selling the site is entirely up to your own ability to get traffic to your offer.

One should consider that under these conditions, even the $5 fee could be considered a waste when you can get an hundredfold more traffic with Flippa's $9 fee.

In my opinion, the $5 sounds great but, in fact, you're throwing away $5 and getting nothing in return. You'd be better off posting a Fiverr gig that talks about your website and the benefit of owning it.

Please comment on my post - I'd like to know what others think.

Not sure how Popular that website is... Flippa is established and they have the most important => TRUST FACTOR <= other than a $5 website. Your not selling/buying a $5 service in there but something above $100 or even above $1k.

Who ever heard of fiveasite before he started dropping links in this forum? A serious contender would have to actually have an advertising budget and advertise the site, as Flippa does. Flippa's fees are too high but $5 is also too high if there are no buyers.

Probably, they are using this strategy to capture more clients, after which, they might go up with the listing price. But this is the best time to make money with such opportunity.

For me it's less about how much it costs and more about how many sets of eyes see my listing. I'd happily pay a few dollars more on Flippa at the moment for this reason. I'd maybe consider switching if the other site takes off, but if it does you'll most likely see a hike in their prices!

No doubt $5 is fairly cheap for a listing fee, there are actually places where you can even sell your website for free (eg. Deal A Site). These are very big authority sites in the website flipping niche too.

I am planning to sign up. Flippa is just too expensive. I have many sites that are micro. Those would probably sell for under $99 and still make me a tidy profit on fiveasite, so there we go. Wish more people would unload domain names. Right now I need some. Thanks for telling us about this new service. All the best to you. Have a wonderful new year.

One thing that's easy to forget is that the $29 (or $9, depending on the type of site) listing fee doesn't just buy you an audience of buyers. It also buys you:

    - The marketing work we do to bring new buyers to the marketplace (ads, PR, guest posts all over the web to introduce the idea of buying a website to new audiences)
    - Advanced searches, automated emails, our weekly newsletter, and other ways for interested, qualified buyers to come right to your listing
    - A robust platform -- building an auction-based marketplace isn't as easy as buying a $50 Flippa clone, especially when nearly 1 million unique visitors come to your site every year.
    - The information we put out to help sellers build and optimise their listings (our guides, blog, and participation in forums like this one)

I understand that it's easy to be swayed by a sexy low price, but I'm also confident that what we're offering is worth the price.
