If I am set on using a certain keyword sequence, but it is taken, should I just go for mydomainname.org, or does it make a big difference to be .com? Advice for a newbie...
#org

I would go with tried, tested and true dotcom. My upline has told me to use this for my upcoming website. Can't give you the reason, just what I've been instructed to do.

You should use your keyword in your domain name. In my experience Google does rank .com higher than other domain extensions and in the business niche a .com sounds more professional and is easier for customers to remember. Usually it will be the first guess if they do not know the extension.

I would do .com. As said above, it is tried and true. It is what people expect of a website (right or wrong). Also, on a less important note: if you not a non profit, you may tick off a visitor if you use .org.

  • Cool--I guess that answers that question. lol Thanks guys. What about using a format like my-domain.com then? I think I could probably find one of my main keywords if I did that.

You should always go for the .com version of a domain, if the .com version of the domain you want is taken scrap it and look for another domain don't bother with the .org or .info versions especially for your main sites and blogs.

Sometimes in highly competitive niches you can't always go with .com

Better ".net" or ".org" or ".co.uk" etc. than nothing.

    I wouldn't mind owning weightloss.org for example!!!

I had a .org once and it did not work well. I think in certain cases it would though, and work stellar at that. I have very few domains right now because of the thought I put into each of them.

.com is much easier to remember. I would always go for a .com rather than a .org

.org is commonly known alongside charitable type organisations. I would go for .net after .com!

Just out of curiosity, what do you think of the ".ws" extension. All of my websites have either a ".com" or ".net" extension, but some web hosting companies (particularly Global Domains International) offer domain names that have a ".ws" extension.

.com are always better than any other TLD and the reason is simple. .coms are much more popular and people tend to type .com on their browser not .org

.com goes for commercial and .org goes for organisation....so i will definitely go for .com

If the .com is taken then other extensions will be better than none if it is a really good keyword domain. for example I just recently bought a .ws domain for a one word keyword that gets over 1 million searches a month and not one adword ad... yet.

I have domains ranked well for . net, and .org so far. .com is the best but the others can be worked into being.

Shouldnt .org be a non-profit organisation? I know you can use them if you want, but I always think of .org as a non profit org. If you had a Affiliate site with .org, maybe it might not perform as well with SEO.

    That s just my thoughts...

There's no rule or law that says .org should be non profit and that misconception can work for your advantage.

There is no alternative to .com if you are in search of organic traffic and want a decent place in Google rankings !

.com .net .org .crap .brill .rubbish

It makes very little difference to how a page or site can be made to rank.

The main downside is what people/visitors perceive.

For example they may find you on google when surfing and your site is called:

    "thisisagoodname.crap"

but when they try to find you again they may type in

    "thisisagoodname.com"

However I stress again, that it is far better to have a keyword rich .net or .org and get some good rankings for it than not bother just because the .com has been taken.

I have sold one or two very valuable .org domain names that didn't even have a website built for them, for very nice $$$$'s.

In an ideal world .com is best. However, last time I left my warm office and peeked outside, I didn't see an ideal world unfortunately. Maybe tomorrow...

If you want people to remember and spread your website by word of mouth then .com is essential. If you are targeting search engine traffic only then it doesn't really matter what the extension is.

If the .com is not available I move on. Find another name. I always buy the .com 1st, and then I buy every TLD that's left. I then do a 301 from all the rest to my .com

If you buy the .org and then have tremendous success then you will lose traffic to the person who owns the .com

I'm not gonna help someone else reap my profits.

Depends on HOW you want to promote.

If it's 'word of mouth', print or other offline media then definitely use .com because people will type that extension by default.

However, if you're using SEO (where people only have to click and not type in anything) going with .org can be a great idea.

As someone who's actually tested this with different domain extensions, I've seen .org's rank just as well (and sometimes better) than the exact same keyword rich domain with a .com extension with all other seo factors being equal.

Just because someone else here may say they'd *personally* prefer a .net or .info, it doesn't mean that Google will...

From my recent experience, it seems that it takes longer for a new site with .org to get indexed on Google than one with .com. However, once the .org gets indexed, it performs as well as .com.

Dude, this isn't well-known but it works for SEO - if you find the .com you want is taken, just add one of these - "the", "for", "with", "and", "by", "a", "an", "in", "of", "on", "are", "be", "if", "into", "which" to the .com. They're called "Stop words" and Google ignores them in domain names. But don't take my word for it. Read this - Domain Names Internet Marketing Blog
