I have been at this every single day for almost a month and I am getting NOWHERE! Right now I just feel like crying because I know there is money to be made but no matter how hard I try I make zero progress.

I started up a money saving blog.
It's a good topic for me to talk about because I like saving money where ever I can.

Been writing articles for it regularly and adding affiliate links in my posts where appropriate. I then try and get traffic from youtube videos, forums, article syndication etc.

I just can't get the traffic and when I do get a small surge there's just no money coming from it. The worst part is I don't know what I'm doing wrong...

Another thing, I will do careful keyword research for my articles, making sure they are optimized in the best way possible and yet they appear on pages 30 of Google... Im literally getting 2 visits a day if I'm lucky.

It's not like I really expected to make money at this stage but I'm seeing little no progress and at this rate I'l never make a penny.

Please, I'm begging for someone to show me what I'm doing wrong.

I would suggest trying to get more social media. Build a Facebook page and start getting people sharing on your page. There you can promote your articles and posts.

To get more people sharing on your Facebook page join other Facebook pages and groups and share there. I know it isn't a quick fix, but doing this steadily will eventually get more people to your Facebook page and ultimately to your website/blog. Saving money is a pretty passionate subject for many people and more will become interested and passionate about it and want to visit your site.

    Don't give up on yourself.

Quit beliving all the BS you read on this forum. Making money online is difficult at the least, even with help its very hard. Thats the truth. The biggest lesson I learned is spending alot of money on all the wso offers doent make it ant eaiser, just more confusing. And only a very small group of people get rich with affiliate marketing, Ive spent years and money ,have websites ect I have lost more than I ever made. Sorry

I can see a bunch of articles on your site but not a lot of monetization. How are you planning to make an income from the site? Where is your monetization above the fold? The visitors you are getting are likely reading your articles and then happily surfing somewhere else. What are you doing to capitalize on the traffic you already ARE getting other than lead capture?

If your looking for organic traffic 1 month is nothing. Perhaps after a year or so you might start getting organic traffic. Try PPC advertising. But really Im not even sure you would want to continue on the way you have been. No offense but your site is just like a gazillion other sites out there. There is no niche, no twist, no gimmic, no additional value that you offer that scores of other more established sites dont offer. In my opinion (which may or may not be worth much to you) your doing 2 things wrong.

    1) Your expecting organic traffic after only 1 month.
    2) Your not doing anything unique.

I think that on a vast majority of your posts, you are looking after keywords that are way, way too competitive: SAVING MONEY ON FLIGHTS, THINGS TO DO ON A BUDGET, OUTSOURCE FOR LESS etc.

I wouldnt personally recommend that niche as well, it is very competitive and almost counter-intuitive to promote. People who are looking on how to spend less money will not be in a good mindset to part with their money and buy your products...

You're right, and that became more and more apparent to me the deeper I took this. It's just something I knew I could deliver value on, for years I've been showing friends and family how to save money and they love learning new methods.

Is it wise to scrap it and start with something more targeted niche?

      Damn

I've been really drilling my website on twitter, facebook, youtube and dozens of social bookmarking websites like stumbleupon.

Checking my metrics I'm getting extremely poor exposure from it

I feel your pain, but to be honest, with the kind of keyword you are targeting, and I assume with little to no budget, you can not get to where you can make real money in one month.

I am in make money online and it took me almost a year and half to start seeing some real money. But once you get there, the money is great. But it takes time and a lot of hard work and even more patience. So, I wouldn't give up, but at the same time I wouldn't expect that kind of results in a month or so.

Your niche has lots of big players and so it's harder to rank. But it's possible. It was the same with my niche, but I was able to do it. It just take lots of work and commitment. I wish you good luck.

first you have to increase your domain and page authority. get some very good dofollow links. Then get some gigs from fiver related to social media optimization. and then write articles about your website on other article marketing websites. this will increase your serp and you will be having more visitors. just work on one or two keywords at a time. apart from that create some very creative articles so you can grab more traffic from facebook, digg and stumbleupon.

Yea thats what I was trying to tell you earlier, Im sorry If Im blunt but that really my nature. But here it is. If you think your just going to throw up WP post some articles and then boom get traffic then your mistaken. Thats not the way it works. There are tens of millions of websites out there, your one small voice trying to get attention in a huge crowd. You need one of 3 things to make a site popular. A) It must be a unique, cool, liked, twist on the website. B) You need a ad budget C) You need a lot of time (perhaps forever) Without one of them you will not do well.
By the way Im speaking from experience, been building websites since 1996 (I actually remember GeoCities and there HTML editor)

      Inxie,

I don't see your site as being similar to the frugal living one. Some reasons:

      1. Your site looks like it's aimed at wannabe internet marketers (e.g. outsourcing to Odesk, 50 cent domain names). Frugal Living seems to be aimed at consumers and doesn't look like it's trying to sell something.

      2. Look at the way Frugal Living links internally to all its other articles.

      3. Not a designer (this is my gut reaction) but your site doesn't look as "serious" as the frugal living one.

It's hard work getting ranked in your niche. I've looked at a lot of competitors and I suspect they're not doing it by content and backlinking - they're doing it by throwing a lot of money at Google Adwords.

      You said this:
for years I've been showing friends and family how to save money and they love learning new methods.
I would therefore add to FirstSocialApps advice and suggest you expand on this current success. Why not give talks to your local community? Put all your advice in a Kindle Book? Get a few dozen paperback versions from Createspace and sell them at your talks?

BTW, I don't see a disclaimer on your site. This is very important. The FTC in the US is a pussycat compared to Australia's ASIC. Oz has the most stringent laws in the world regarding giving financial advice and, although you are not a qualified financial adviser (and so subject to tighter compliance), I really would put up a very prominent and comprehensive disclaimer.

Your domain name is awesome, here is an idea for you. Stop with the global stuff. Focus locally. Talk about how people in your local area can save money on local business's etc. Use geo targeted ads and Facebook to attract local people. Actually talk to local business's and write articles about them. As time goes by expand to the next town .. and so on. DONT worry about monitization at this point.

In all actuality you are in a AWESOME spot. No organic traffic. Now you can spend your time making your site a destination that the frugal will flock to. Instead of an affiliate link broker.

Concentrate on your target in detail. How can you genuinely help them. Make helping them your motive and you can't lose. Make "click here pleeeeeeeeeeeese!" your motive and you'll be lost in a trash pile of useless flyers.

Once your destination is genuine, do 2 things. 1 start finding ways that you can pay for advertising. Pay per click through AdWords or Facebook is something you should study in depth.

Sorry to say...but organic traffic is not a safe business model. That is why you are in a great spot! Cause you now must find a way to build your community the right way. Provide value and advertise.

Once you have built an actual presence, with real people even, who trust you and depend on you, you will find that the Googs and the clones will start to take notice of your optimized efforts and natural links that are cropping up everywhere. But never depend on organic for your future livelihood. It can and does and will betray you. Run your business for real and stay in control.

I second this opinion. Get local in your articles and in your promotion. Join groups on Linkedin and Facebook that are specific to your geographic area and post daily to them - without selling, just sharing information.

You should also add a lead capture on your website - not to sell anything but to send them a weekly newsletter with saving tips. Sending a free newsletter is a great way to get people to sign up. If you can provide coupons, notice of free local stuff or whatever you can build a following.

Don't forget about Press Releases too - Especially if you have a local niche you can get in local newspapers pretty easily to promote your website.

As for age of a website it does matter - I have sites that I started a couple of years ago and then stopped posting because they didn't make any money. Suddenly they are getting traffic and people joining, even though I didn't do anything. I'm not sure what changed, but believe me I am taking advantage while I can.

      Good Luck.

Use keyword 1 on your video, use keyword 1 on your blog. Link your blog to your video, link your video to your blog. Use keyword1 as anchor text for each. Make sure keyword 1 is spoken in video, make sure keyword 1 is in description at video places. Make sure keyword 1 is in title at video places. Same for blog, make sure keyword 1 is in title of blog, and is used a few times in the blog article. Make sure you link to the video.

If you are using Wordpress without a doubt go get Yoast SEO plugin and use it immediately to tell you all the SEO mistakes you are making.

Extremely competitive topics your content is based on. And for such a new site to rank so quickly would be doing a disservice to established sites. Google has to take a few months to trust that the site is a good one and then it will start sending traffic your way from long tail search terms. Don't expect to to start ranking for popular search terms for many months or even years. However, you may do so for semi competitive but quite popular terms.

I think your site might be a little to broadly focused or lack of focus you might say. You need to home into one particular area for these type of sites to be successful in the shortest possible time.

Would it be okay to expect to rank #1 for long tail keywords with around 1000 searches a month?

Yes it can. Once your site has aged a bit, gotten some backlinks, you may find any new content you put up starts ranking quite well for terms you many not even have thought about. I would say for many people out there, long tail or semi long tail terms make up bulk of their traffic.

And since you only have few categories at the moment, why not have them in the sidebar all showing? It will narrow the focus for people; if people are only interested in travel saving tips, they will click on at and go through the posts there.

      Excellent advice.

One month -- in anything -- is not even close to enough time to succeed. When was the last time you picked up a new career and knocked it out of the park in 30 days?

Stop biting on the "You Can Earn $4,756 Every Day In No Time with Zero Work" headlines and focus on building a business. (Like other warriors have already mentioned, start building that list!)

Maybe build yourself a long term business plan for your website. Set yourself target projections for 6-12 months for traffic and revenue.

It is OK to cry and get frustrated with your "business" model. Get that frustration out and crying is good for that. If you don't cry, you don't have a heart.

I would look for a mentor and then learn from them.

Maybe this isn't for you. Maybe you should look at other things.

I am looking for a mentor, actually. I specialize in financial markets/forex/equities [profitable niche], have lots of ideas, decent technology background and pretty darn motivated. But I don't want to spend 2 years learning the ropes. I want to start making money right away and am willing to partner with a mentor for a long-term project.

... darn it... wish I could meet someone.

I've been at this for 4 years, and I'm "still learning"

Well it's a start right. But the thing about business is that usually only 1 in 10 succeed. The other factors that I've found to have success include:

    1) Giving it a good year of hard work to eventually get it to the point where you have lots of traffic, a refined offer, and some profits coming in.

    2) Having a sales pitch of some sort. like 99% of sites are just sites. They are not really engaging in any way. They don't get the visitor to stop and take notice. There's nothing capturing the visitors attention. Where as if you arrive at say a video sales letter page where it's trying to engage you and sell you something, or someone is doing a doodle visual in the sales video, that engages the visitor. Even a big headline will do the same thing. But you want to be in the 1% that causes people to take action.

    3) You need lot of traffic.

    4) You need a unique stellar idea. Good ideas are not good enough anymore. You need a great idea, or an existing idea done as good or better than everyone else to stand a chance.

    5) fill a need

Just keep trying eventually something will take hold. I think some good examples of money making sites are the ones in the clickbank marketplace under ecommerce. The ones high gravity. Check those out. They really demonstrate how to sell the person visiting.

As far as just saving money goes, again it's good, but it's very basic, and probably all too common. And what exactly are you selling? Most people already know how to save money or else they just don't care that much. See saving money is a want, not exactly a need. So its' a tuffer sell.

    whats up fella,

listen, stick to it, this requires time. Here are some crucial things u r missing:

more interlinking on your posts. at least 3 interlinks per post - u want to mimic wikipedia

target more "practical low hanging fruit" keywords.

speed up your upload time with W3 Total Cache or Cloudfare. Google rewards fast sites.

embed your vids on related posts. This improves your content perceived value and decreases your bounce rate. Google rewards low bounce sites.

get your backlinks from other ACTUAL authority sites via guestblogging. Myblogguest DOT com is good for this. Get to know other webmasters in your niche.

provide something unique how about a service.

You are doing the rest of it right! Stick to it my man u'll be alright, remember that there is light at the end of the tunnel, just keep moving forward!

Your site stats show your getting around 100 visitors a day. Can I ask why your not running AdSense either?

Another problem with your site are your post titles, they should target your key phrase and not be focusing on being creative/fun you only do this when you have a big following on your blog. Thats probably your big problem is no body is searching for your titles key phrase.

I can guarantee you i'm not getting 100 visits a day, whatever you're using to calculate that is way off. Also, I'm not running adsense because i'd rather visitors to be clicking my affiliate links.

It seems to me like you have put in the time and that you have the desire to succeed. What I see here though is a blog that is all over the map. Yes, it's point is "saving money" but that is vague. Everybody wants to save money on everything. You are talking about flights, ebook covers, odesk and all kinds of topics. You are trying to cover everyone.

Focus on one thing. Maybe saving money on Food. Then research and write about coupons in the Sunday paper one day, coupons in the mail flyers, coupons you can get online. Write a dozen posts about that type of saving and ONLY on food. Then start another train of thought...saving money on food at warehouse type stores...write a dozen or so nicely researched articles on that. Then hit up some online resources...like buying certain food on Amazon or whatever....do you get the point? Here are 3 ways to save on food, each train of thought has a dozen or so articles though...not just one and they are about saving money on FOOD...nothing else.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned before I started making money was the real meaning and understanding of targeted. It's so easy to veer off and try to please everyone. Don't do it. Blog niches like this need to focus on a tiny narrow topic an inch wide and a mile deep.

Once I realized this and truly understood it, I stopped worrying about keywords, traffic sources ect, and just wrote, keeping my mind focused on what the one particular article was about. It worked! I've never turned back. Of course, in time I've developed other ways to drive traffic which really helps, but if I didn't write a single post on a forum, write a single article for the directories, no pinterest, no Facebook, no Youtube, I'd still make decent money just from people linking to and from my blog and my bing, google and yahoo traffic!

Don't give up. Just get more focused, pinpointed, targeted. Start over if you have too! Hope this helps some! Good luck and Merry Christmas to you and everyone on the Warrior Forum!

      Inxie,

Re: your site not looking as serious.

      1. You have social sharing buttons both on the left and in the header. Frugal Living has them just in the header.

      2. On the right, Frugal Living has "Featured Articles" you have an IM offer above a Blue Host ad.

      3. The simple line Frugal Living has used to separate their articles on the home page looks "cleaner" than the big boxes you use. It also allows them to get 6 article headlines above the fold compared to only 3 on your site (their smaller header also helps). So Frugal Living has double your chances of having a headline that catches the visitor's eye.

      Hope this makes it clearer.

      Martin

    I started up a money saving blog - howsaver.com

Then its time to go "gorilla"... which basically means tackling people directly and one of the best ways to do this is to print simple flyers advertising your site.

You could write a small half page or third page ad (to save paper). Something like this:

Looking to save money this holiday season?

    Checkout >> HowSaver.Com

    AND START SAVING NOW!!!

Then place them where ever you can. I like to put them in restaurants...where the owner will allow you to place your business card at the entrance.

Well first off, your website is about saving money. People that are into saving money usually don't want to spend money. This means not buying your affiliate products.

I think its always best to promote things people absolutely need. Not to say you can't make money on this, just think there is tons of money to be made on products that are a necessity.

Yes, because this is a backwards approach.

You don't generate random traffic then find out how to monetize it.

You isolate a group of people with a problem that is solved via a purchase, present a solution based on their specific wants and needs, then get as many of those people to your offer as you can.

Traffic does NOT equal money, sales = money, so work on selling not traffic otherwise you will end up with a big hosting bill and nothing to show for it.

Instead of giving up, she should try FINE TUNING. This means assessing the situation and LEARNING. The guy isn't starting from scratch. He already has a lot to work with: He already has traffic. He already has a site built. He already has content. He just needs to FOCUS and tweak his site and BUILD on what he already has. PERSISTENCE is the key.

Many affiliate marketers and promoters FAIL because the moment they hit a wall, they try to get on another horse. Instead of bailing out, HANG ON and GIVE IT ALL YOU'VE GOT!

You have nice blog in there but you will never make money with this attitude.
First of all you have around 20 articles on your website, I usually add Google analytics to website where I have at least 500 articles because there won't be any organic traffic from only 20 articles.

So far you are doing great but with this speed you will need at least one year regular posting to make at least few bucks a day. You need to find they way to scale because you are not in the niche where you can expect tons of traffic from social networks because your website is not unique. There are at least 10,000 better and larger websites in your niche so you need to push harder - more content, better content, marketing, leads, etc.

I feel like crying too. Know why? Most people commenting in this thread mean well but I didn't see one comment (there might be one but I just scanned) that addressed the real problem. Here it is: You offer no compelling reason for a visitor to do anything. You have no benefit-oriented headline. The site is neat and clean but boring as hell. Sorry, that's a fact.

You need a brief explanation of what the site is for. Create a nice header and put a grabber of a headline in there. Have a link pointing to a very short, informative explanation of why people should even care about howsaver.com. Another thing, what does "How I Made $82..." have to do with your site? It has nothing to do with it. That's a completely different market than bargain hunters. Get rid of it and put up something related to your main gig.

You're not far off. You don't need any "hang in there" type cheerleading you need to edit your site to appeal to your market. As it stands now it's a dud. Do that and you can get rid of your crying hankies. Good luck.

If I recall, he was asking about traffic and his SE position -

so yes - I say he should "hang in there"

When it comes to organic traffic/serp's/seo you need to give it more time then a month. Some folks say they can rank in a few days.. maybe.. but I've cracked plenty top 3 positions long term, and it seems 3 months is often the magic number for me (not including videos, etc, on major established sites).

regarding site theme/topic, etc: in my experience, the more people click around your site, the lower the conversion. If you want them to click on an affiliate link, then everything else is usually just a distraction.

Traffic ain't worth spit if your site isn't ready. But carry on...

It's only been a month...give it time. Remember, you are using seo to get traffic and that's a long term traffic strategy. If you want traffic and possibly a few sales quickly create 10 or 20 videos per article and submit it them to YouTube. You should start seeing a traffic increase quickly assuming your using the right keywords.

Also, consider purchasing some targeted traffic from say Facebook adds to test conversions and stuff like that. Good luck try adding a red arrow above your free ebook.

    Good luck

Been writing articles for it regularly and adding affiliate links in my posts where appropriate. I then try and get traffic from youtube videos, forums, article syndication etc.

I just can't get the traffic and when I do get a small surge there's just no money coming from it. The worst part is I don't know what I'm doing wrong...

Well I have the same issue sorta to. When I first started, it was a couple months before I literally started to make pennies. But I guess it depends on what situation you are in currently.

What you can also try maybe is go to forums that are based around your niche ? I know some forums do have sections for deals etc.

Maybe you could try making a website that has coupon codes and tons of other things for discounts ? You could get profit but most likely from ads being displayed on your website. Or you could even make cash off the site with using hostgator as a discount because I know that they have an affiliate program where you can get like 50$ for 5 signups and much more. Checkout their affiliate program:

Your site is not focused enough. On one hand it appears you want to promote make money online stuff, and on the other hand you want it to be about saving money. Which is it? They are two completely different markets, even though they both have to do with money. That's where the similarity ends, though.

If you want it to be about saving money, make it only about that. Don't try to mix IM niche stuff in there. It just doesn't fit.

When you chase 2 rabbits, you often times end up with none. Think about what your visitors actually want to see, not what you want to sell to them.

Bottomline: When I visit your site, I want to know how I can save $82 in 10 minutes....not make it.

Entrepreneur/internet marketing savings and consumer/personal savings aren't the same thing. You should either clearly divide these 2 things up or choose one and run with it.

As a casual browser from both worlds, I'm not going to sift through consumer and personal savings tips to find internet marketing/business savings tips and vice versa. I'm either focusing on business or personal when browsing the internet, not both.

I think you should go with the internet marketing/business savings angle, because personal/consumer savings has been done to death as many have already mentioned.

Its a start - it took me over 12 months before I really started making money with my plans - and guess what my first several ideas i worked really hard on failed.....its tough sometimes.

The good news is once you break through you'll feel a lot better.... now to some points.....in my opinion you are wasting your time with this first idea. Its cool and you are doing a good job with it.....its just not a promising money maker.

You are targeting people who are looking to penny pinch and save money....not exactly an ideal crowd to make money from.... In my experience the stronger someones desires something (a loan, to lose weight, a date, etc) the easier it is to get them to do something (submit their information, buy something, click an ad) - if you can give them what they are desiring! Thats the key. You have to tap into something strong and give them what they want. Yes people want to save money but what are you giving them? Some free advice that goes nowhere for you personally. Its not a money maker.

Instead (for example) I would focus on people who have too much debt and are looking to consolidate their debts to save money. Or people who want to refinance to save money. See what I'm getting at? Obviously you're in this for the money (or you'd be happy right now) so start thinking more specific and compelling.

Each one is a massive market. Pick one thing and develop that. When you've got that rolling create a subdomain and go with something else. It's extremely hard to sell to varied markets from the same site unless you're an Amazon or Yahoo, etc. It's even harder to put a decent SEO strategy in place with so many different keywords. Good luck.

I think you need to take a breath and think things out. First, you're not talking about niches here, you're talking about two or three major markets. Travel is a multi billion dollar market. It covers everything from African safaris to trips to the moon. No single marketer can promote "travel." Same goes for technology.

Rocky Mountain bike tours is a niche. Visiting the dirty dives of Liverpool is a niche. Exploring bat caves in Bulgaria is a niche. A niche is a sub market. A micro niche is a sub market of a niche. These examples are all sub markets of travel.

The best thing you can do is pick several niches within travel or technology and promote that way. Learn what it takes to be successful and expand as you go. You've got a good start. Now study what successful marketers have done and emulate that. Easy peasy.

    Inxie,

I checked out the first 2 options on your site. First of all, somewhat decent. Nice look, easy to navigate, useful info. But I have a FEW bits of advice. I haven't checked yet if anyone suggested this.

    1. MONETIZE IT!!!!! You seem to always be offering hosting. For the flight advice, make it traveling companies, etc... Add a section on hotel brands, car rental companies, etc...
For the section on cheap dates, offer coupons on food and entertainment.

    2. Try to add more useful info in the same space. The flight info for example, has some worthless comparisons, etc... Take my word for it! AT LEAST in the US domestically, tuesday and wednesday ARE the best days to fly!

    3. Just doing the above will help, believe it or not. But you can look into other ways to get more links either way. Also add a search feature

Look Professional: If your site doesn't look professional, it doesn't matter how much traffic you drive to it. It will never do what you want it to.
Structure Matters: If you're using the wrong type of site for the outcome you want (sale, lead, click, etc) then, again... it doesn't matter how much traffic you drive to it, it will never do what you want it to.

Watch What You Do: You have to use the right traffic tactics to get the right kind of traffic!

To get reasonable organic traffic, at a minimum, you need to blog daily for at least 3 months. If you are writing to competitive keywords, maybe a year. This is just the reality of blogging. You have to have a long term perspective. However, if you are blogging about a subject you a passionate about, this shouldn't be problem.

See whats trending in the 'money saving' arena these days- start with google.insights. I noticed that people are searching for a particular money saving site - MoneySavingExpert.com Forums - take a look at it and see what they are doing for ideas. (That link is to the site forum...another great place to look for what the majority of people are interested in).

One thing that I noticed is that you are offering deals on many IM products - keywords like "cheap internet marketing ideas" and "cheap internet marketing tools" might be something you should look into.

One thing you've mentioned is that you've been working at this for a month.

Expecting great results after just that long isn't that realistic - although possible.

I've been developing my system over YEARS, from the research, development, implementation---with myself and others BEFORE I ever started a site and bringing people to it to share it to others.

My way of getting customers wasn't website-based at first, but I wouldn't have done it had I not tested, re-tested, and had data and results to back up my proof-of-concept.

So - I'm not saying you don't have a great idea, I'm saying that after 1 month - you're still an infant SEO-wise.

I was surprised that there was no opt-in form to create a list of folks who want to receive money-saving emails. Your most valuable asset will be that list.

Consider ditching the ads for internet marketing products. That's not your target audience.

Also consider catering better to women. Despite a bum rap for shopping addiction, ladies are the ones in a family most interested in belt-tightening, so tips on SHOES, kid's clothes, household staple buying are all wonderful. (Did I mention shoes???)

You may want to invest in ACME's Related Ads plugin. It will pull in ads that complement what your posts are discussing - get 'em while they're intrigued.

Finally, be more human in your text. Share a story. There's no way to properly brand a scrolling array of discounts but you can really bond with folks when they come to understand that the most important aspect of your business life is looking out for them.

I wish you all the best. I don't know your niche, but I do know people well, and all commerce - e- or bricks 'n mortar - boils down to connecting first, monetizing second.

Inxie, Don't get let off by what has happened. Every successful people has crossed that same path you are in now. Don't DOUBT Yourself, which will really make it further worse. As a newbie, I would always suggest doing YouTube marketing as it is comparatively lot easier than other methods as you know Google gives great ranking to videos. Further, even without Google ranking, you can crush it with just YouTube results!

One time I shared that i was making money online with my cousin who is a head financial advisor lol. He's brilliant and he said. "You want to make money online?" Then give away something every other person collects money for and place big companies advertising on your site.

He is right you all know that. If you have a high traffic targeted website you can live off the ad income. Just a thought.

You've been at it a month. One month. It usually takes people a lot longer than that to figure out what works and what doesn't when it comes to Internet Marketing. Be glad you're figuring out you have a problem early on in the game instead of after investing years of your time in something that isn't profitable.

Your website looks good, but it's all over the place. You have articles about plane tickets, odesk, domain names, negotiation strategy and Microsoft Office all on the front page. I'd try to focus on one sub-niche and try to work it from all angles. Really drill down and find sub-niches that haven't been beat to death.

On average, it takes FIVE months, and that is if you're lucky. Most people spend their entire year focusing on a niche with less results than expected. Success doesn't come in an instant, just like Rome wasn't built in a day. Keep it up.

I visited your blog and it looks user-friendly. It also looks like as if effort is really exerted in it. Sure, it lacks proper arrangement, but I think that's what make it more interesting. Keep on focusing on one Niche, give your best shot in promotions, and keep on creating quality posts. All people has its ups and downs.

How are "averages of lucky people" determined? Who decides who was "lucky"? I think the reality is that most beginning internet marketers drop out and give up before they earn any money at all (no, I can't prove that). For myself, when I set up my affiliate marketing business, I earned almost nothing for well over 3 months (because I had very little idea what I was doing, and made a stack of mistakes), but I did earn what I then considered "a living" in my 5th month. And I think I was particularly lucky. But I doubt very much indeed whether that represents any kind of "average".

Oh right. I was thinking something else when I posted this. My bad. Although, if you don't mind, I don't think a mathematical error shows the age of a person. No one is perfect, everyone makes mistakes, even if it's so terribly simple.

I got the idea of an average based on the clients that we encountered and the people that posts in different forums that has the same niche as the OP's, and is somewhat related to the OP's situation. I quite agree that you won't get the real average of the time required in order to achieve success, since only a fraction of the population is involved. However, you can still get a clue on what it is.

Great perspective. Thank you for sharing, as I sometimes do advice this as well. However, I might want to point out that only one month has passed in the OP's project. I feel like it's still too early to decide whether to abandon the project or not. After reading the OP's article, I can see that he is making progress, albeit slow. Once you're making progress, it is not an ideal time to quit.

A month is too short of time to be crying when it comes to an information/tips/review blog. You need to keep plugging and improving your site...it could be 6 months or even a year before you really start making anything substantial.

I can't remember the post, but the co-founder of the popular site MakeUseOf.com gave an interview and I believe it was about 2 years before the site started making money. He and others were committed to it, however, and his goal with every article was to make it better than anything else out there.

Now, of course, they are wealthy from that site. Don't give up if you love the site and love what it is about. Do give up if you are ONLY trying to make money with it.

    I wouldn't give up.

I saw a picture on here a while ago of a cartoon character mining through a tunnel for diamonds. As he progressed through the tunnel he started to get tired that he was getting no results from all his hard work.

He turned back and gave up, not knowing that there were large amounts of diamonds about 3ft further through the tunnel.

The point here being that you don't know how close you are to success until you hit it. But if you give up, you will never succeed.

This cartoon has been posted here several times, unfortunately. It's certainly graphic, eye-catching and superficially attractive, but the reality is that it applies to only a very small minority of those not reaching the diamonds. The great majority, whom it completely ignores, are all the people who didn't reach them because they had set off in the wrong direction in the first place.

You won't if you keep going in the wrong direction, either.

Sometimes a fresh start, with a new and very different orientation, is the right answer.

I always respect your opinion Alexa, I had a pretty sleepless night thinking about all the replies in this thread. I'm trying to figure out a way where I don't have to completely abandon it, but target it more effectively. It's hard to throw away all that hard work

Perhaps a local perspective on it would work as suggested. Maybe covering my town only?

It's IMO not a "must have" to narrow your niche, but it makes it easier to monetize.

You need to match your offer to your traffic - so when you have a lot of traffic for totally different keywords it's harder to show offers which match.

Some told it, your hosting offer is little appealing to whom arrived through your "save money on travelling" article.

Authority sites use sophisticated software which match traffic and offers based on the keyword they enters a site. In the future maybe some for you.

Overall man I can say that YOU ROCK, 1 lousy month into this and you have a catchy domain name, a site which works and looks cool, AND you have traffic (even if still little).

Off course there is room for improvement but I think you are doing good so far. Many can't even build a Squidoo Lens in their first month.

I answered to a thread where someone complains to make zilch after 3 years. That's a headache, but YOUR problem isn't a problem, trust me.

Your traffic is coming for different reasons so you maybe need to offer general CPA offers over banner ads targeted for woman's (90% of all households are managed by woman's, so THEY are the ones which are looking for saving tips and buy stuff).

Some posts above a person told POST BLOGGING. I think that's a great idea in your case but in a way that writers post at YOUR blog and that you post on other blogs. Will get you unique and fresh content.

Then I don't know if you use Onlywire or something similar to distribute your posts online. Recommend that very much, has a free option.

SocialAdr would be a good tool where others distribute your posts to their network.

Make a toolbar at Conduit - Increase User Engagement & Web Traffic to engage visitors and get more traffic. You can distribute that toolbar also over software sharing sites which will get you a god backlink from each site.

Guess those are my 2 cts so you can make it happen.

I think what Alexa was getting at (and I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong Ms. A) is that sometimes the frustration and negativity surrounding a project needs to be put aside for now. Not to say its gone forever. Just on the backburner.

Frustration is a powerful and debilitating force. Taking a step back to work on something new, something different, gives us a chance to recharge. And when we come back to the tricky project, we do so with fresher eyes. A change in mindset can be the key to fixing the problem the right way.

    Here is what I do.

Have a Google Webmaster Account and Bing Webmaster Account and manually add the index to both.
Make sure you have a google+, Youtube, Facebook & Page, Twitter, Pinterest, Digg, Delicious accounts

    For each article I write.
Post to Facebook, Twitter, Goggle+, Digg, Delicious
Pin a picture into my Pinterest account
Join a bunch of Google+ communities (They are new) and start posting to those when you have a new article.

Now I do really well on Yahoo and Bing, but Google has been a bit sketchy. It used to be really easy to rank, but their new algorithms seem to be taking me longer. Sometimes my articles do really well and some don't. Doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason.

Do reviews on other company products and share it with them. They in turn often share it with their audience. I always get a good bump when doing this.

I have a blogger blog that I haven't updated in months. Maybe 2-5 dribble in a day. I changed the template and posted a good article. I +1'd my article on google plus.

A month is a short period of time before traffic can catch up. Where I work, it can take a client's web pages 3 months or more to get on the first age, depending on how competitive they keyword they choose.

You have a pretty decent blog, and judging by your blogroll, it seems like you're in the frugal niche.

Have you considered guest posting on one of these blogs with a link leading back to your website? How about guest posting on Comluv.com?

You might be able to create a post from a university student point of view and talk about things you've done to save money while in Australia.

These days, after the Penguin and Panda update, the focus has been on quality content for readership.

And there are a LOT of readers in the frugal market. So go for it.

OK, I posted earlier. but let me add to it. You ARE on the right track. Follow the advice I gave earlier, and you WILL do better. Don't expect to get rich though. A LOT of people are sayig the SAME as you.

I have, for literally YEARS, been thinking about starting a site built around a book I have been writing. That site would touch on travel as well as other things my book touches on. CORPORATE politics and some other concerns, as well as piracy concerns, methods to do it right, and just tie have prevented me from going too far.

And HEY, clark howard has been doing much the same as you as well! Clark Howard: Save More, Spend Less and Avoid Rip-offs | www.clarkhoward.com

You can measure your stats by using StatCounter, a good free service that you can upgrade later. Knowing where your viewers come from can give you good clues.

Knowing Search Engine Optimization is also a good idea. You can find courses and even free ebooks about that right here on the site.

You also could think about offering some good ebooks for sale or your very own product. You can also narrow your niche by not trying to be everything to everyone. For example, you could focus in on saving money on _________ (just one area).

You can also find out about niches here on this site too. I have found many good resources here.

Find other really great money-saving sites out there and tell your readers about them. Add a blog to your site, and more pages of interesting articles that you write yourself.

Find another way to make money right now, and learn about this field little by little. Don't expect to make a lot of money right away, because real traffic usually takes some time. But you never know! Some great sites have done very well in less time than others.

Above all, don't give up. If you love learning about making money from a website, by all means keep learning about it. But don't quit your day job until you are making a living from it.

Good luck with your site! And I hope my tips help you.

  • 2 things : Your site is one month old and is on a topic that is too general. Everyone wants to save money, that is like a given. Like it was stated above find a niche. .

My advice would be to go local and feature local businesses and local services in your area. Maybe spread the word with some flyers.

I feel like you're headed in the right direction, keep using social media and get your friends and family to spread the word.

Most importantly give it time, Rome wasn't built in a day. Take a break, focus on something else for like a day or 2 and come back with a fresh outlook.

first-off congratulations on making regular posts..
think of your social circles.. which circles would you be interested to target?

write articles and invite them to subscribe to your blog (you might want to use an autoresponder service)

instead of getting 2 random visits.. how about 10 visits from friends who can share with their friends.. if you can get a list of 100 subscribers.. this will ensure you get 5 to 10 visits daily

also make a report or ebook that can get your visitors started and want to comeback and read what you write..

a report that stands out can be easily shared and easily communicate what your site is about..
    2 things:
    1. write for readers you can reach on your personal email or facebook friends
    2. capture emails and daily or weekly digests of your posts

    monetization:
    reviews works best:
    - think of a book in savings.. buy, read and review and link to it from time to time in your posts..
if also you want to talk about savings.. don't compare paid vs free but compare expensive vs less expensive this way you get the readers in the mood of buying and save eventually.

    AGAIN: Define your audience

What you describe in post #1 is the typical outcome of a newbie project launch. Nobody gets it right their first time. I don't mean to scare you off, but you should be prepared to make little to nothing in your first year or two (perhaps longer). Every success story started out as a labor of love and didn't involve complaining on a forum about having no traffic after just a month.

Don't even focus on traffic or monetization right now. That might seem crazy, but working on your content production skills is all that matters for now.

Quality content = traffic = revenues

Worry about them in that order.

I will not recommend you to do social media promotion or whatsoever. If you really want to succeed and make money, get your blog on first page of google (somehow or the other). Mark my words, that's the only way to get traffic and traffic = money. Work over that and achieve rankings for keywords that people search for (in your niche). You'll never feel sad again if you succeeded in what i'm recommending you.

    Good Luck

Well, someone may have already responded this way but I am not going to read every response

    But wow, a whole MONTH?

Seems like someone sold you on the idea of easy income and you bought it hook, line and sinker.

While I do know a few who made money in relatively short order, most I know took a lot longer than a month.

For me, I made a few bucks within a year, but it took me about 4 years to make consistent cash that I could predict and count on (working on line part time, that is).

A month is hardly what I would call an effort. If you truly are NOT a quitter, then keep trying. But get the idea of easy money out of your head. Doesn't work that way.

    Good luck.

Saving money niche isn't very profitable to begin with. Just think. Would anyone be desperate to save money? Or would they rather be desperate to settle their debts? There needs to be a problem, and some sort of urgency in the saving money niche, and if you can identify the problem, you can just hop in and profit in that gap.

After that, you need to focus on your off-site SEO strategies. You shouldn't be trying to rank for keywords that have been dominated by big authority sites. Do your keyword research in-depth.

I think it's better to switch overall to the "settle debts" niche or "make money" niche. The old money-saving content can still be used, just need to refurnish the whole site. Just my 2 cents.

But what do I know - I don't play in that niche

My very first attempt back in 2001 was the credit repair niche (personal experience there...) until someone pointed out that I am targeting a niche that has poor credit and very few credit cards (this was before Paypal was popular).

    Hey there

I am an Aussie and in my humble opinion this is what I believe to be the best thing for you to do.

You have to get the fundamentals right, I started in this game merely 8 months ago and have purchased all manner of courses, and what I believe was the most beneficial to me was Mark Lings - Affilorama Blueprint. - this is a comprehensive step by step guide for beginners to websites, niches, traffic etc.

It cost about $200 bucks and is the best $200 I ever spent, this will not make you a millionaire overnight, in fact it will most likely be a month or 2 or 5 before you start making money.

The reason I think this is a good idea is because we don't need to be genius's, we simply need to follow somebody successful and then model them, he is very successful, has great customer support and the videos are great. I find videos the best way to learn personally.

There are so many ways to make money on the internet that you can get "frazzled", try not to get "shiny ball" syndrome.

I am now making money online consistantly, it is a small amount of money but I don't care because in this game it is very scalable, all I have to do is "rinse and repeat" over and over again.

Once you have the fundamentals you can learn a bit more about
    Benefits of Aged Domains
    Getting More Traffic
    Syndication etc etc etc

    I hope this helps

    Simon

Yes, this is logical. The realities of the niche may be a little different, though, I think. Call me a skepchick, but I can't help wondering whether some of the people needing to save money, and perhaps especially some of the people with poor credit histories (different niche, of course), might actually be pretty good at spending money.

You've started a business and not making a profit within 1 month? - join the line.

The 'normal' expectation when starting a new business is to not expect a profit until around 18 months.

So, you've bought into the get-rich-quick version of IM and now are disappointed that for one month of work you're not making money - the problem is your expectation.

Just take it as a lesson learned.

Almost no-one gets their IM business profitable that quickly and those that do often don't make it last. This is normal.

Stop expecting quick results and treat it like you're building a proper business with realistic timescales and you can take your current situation and see it as a good start.

You may not be doing anything wrong that I can see. You should give yourself more credit. You understand SEO and only been at it for a month. That's incredible for a newbie.

Starting out is the hardest part to all of this wondering how to get traffic and make it convert into money. The two things to study right now is traffic and conversions. I suggest you do a Solo Ad. Paying giving away a free product. From there email them with your offers. Paying $25 is not bad you'll get around 21 new members to send your offers.

    It will happen!
