My list has about 500 unconfirmed subscribers....any idea why someone would sign up for a free gift from my squeeze page and then not confirm in order to get the actual gift? Fake email addresses maybe? Just kinda curious if anyone else has unconfirmed subs...

Everyone who uses COI gets some of those. The question is, what percentage of the people who submit the form end up confirming their subscriptions?

Some people change their minds when they get the confirmation email. Others use fake email addresses. If you have a high % of unconfirmed emails, you might want to either beef up your freebie or spice up your confirmation email. You might have to push them a little harder so they can get off the fence.

this is why i don't ever use double opt in now

those 500 subscribers, if you were using single opt in they would of all seen your one time offer and you would of made between 15 - 50 sales not including upsells so you're leaving a massive amount of money and buyers on the table

some people just don't confirm it's just the way it is

you shouldn't bother yourself on the number of unconfirmed mails, you should consider percentage.

if that's just a small percentage compared to those who've signed up, nothing is wrong with that.

The unconfirmed subscribers shouldn't be more 5%. I have 3% unconfirmed rate for my list so far.

and also if you want some advise you should include the optin page where they used to sign up, am sure you'll get lot's of support from members of this forum

Congratulations on your absolutely astounding, unprecedented 97% confirmation-rate.

Please excuse the observation that I can't help wondering whether we learned "counting" the same way, at high school.

I use single opt-in for all of my IM and MMO lists. I am considering including my other niches as well

Also some people think that they don't have to confirm the email to get the gift, so they enter a bogus one In expecting to get the gift on the next page.

Which, along with typos, is where a lot of the unconfirmed addresses come from. You'll get those even with the best confirmation process.

That's the thing people who shout about using only single opt-in don't seem to 'get.' If you set your confirmation process up correctly, you actually lose very few legitimate sign-ups.

    Hi robo916,

Couple of things that could contribute to this. I must admit I've got a pretty large percentage of unconfirmed subs as well.

    1. Confirmation email being sent to spam and your 'confirm your subscription' page doesn't do a good enough job of telling them to check there.
    2. Fake email addresses - some people don't feel comfortable giving their main email address for squeeze pages because they think they're going to get spammed. They thought they were just going to get their download and leave yet didn't foresee the fact they'd have to confirm the subscription.
    3. People testing - if you've asked a few people to test your opt-in or perhaps you've done so yourself, they may not have gone through the full confirmation process.
    4. Poor traffic source - it may just be that the traffic you're getting is hesitant to go through the confirmation process. For whatever reason, they don't feel comfortable confirming. This is likely because they'd rather not subscribe to an email newsletter even if they do get your free gift. It's just not worth their hassle.

Hopefully that gives you some insight. Good luck!

I tried both single and double opt in and with double opt in I get the most people who don't bother to confirm.

With single opt in I get a message every couple of days from someone who unsubscribed asking why they received this email..

At least these people have seen your oto and had the chance to download your gift.

Maybe you could try to make your confirmation email more appealing..

You did the common mistake of going double optin. Sure people praise you get higher quaility subscribers because they show motivation and interest in what you have to offer, but you have to realize that when someone signups to your double optin list they might not have either:

    A. Found the confirmation email (it ended up in spam, etc)

    or...

    B. They forgot what they signed up for, and don't feel like confirming anymore.

Always go single optin. You keep all of your subscribers, and you can always remove the ones that havent opened/clicked on any emails down the line if you want to clean up your list.

    Hope that helps

Yeah thanks guys I might switch over to single opt in to see if that helps. Just don't wanna get too many "why am I receiving this email" responses...

I explain VERY clearly on my confirmation message that if they do not confirm they will not get the gift...people don't read I guess....

When I was setting up my AR, I made sure to choose the audio file that told me to check their e-mail and click on the confirmation link. Even though all people don't confirm, it's only a very small percentage.

      Garrie,
      What do you consider correctly?
It starts with making sure people know they're signing up for a list before they put their email address into the form. If all your opt-in page says is "Put your email address below to get our free whatsis," you're going to lose a chunk to the "What list?" factor.

You may also want to mention the confirmation process in the sign-up page. Test it, as it doesn't always matter, but that can sometimes help.

The biggest thing is to let them know on the page that comes up after they submit their address that they're going to have to confirm... and how to do it. You need to tell them to check their email, what they're looking for, and why you do it.

It's probably a good idea to suggest they check their spam folder if the message doesn't appear in their inbox within the next 5 minutes or so. I explain that with a simple, "They do their best to let the good stuff in and keep the spam out, but filters sometimes get it wrong."

      Clarity and congruency. Works wonders.

I've started out by using single opt-ins (off of advice I've gotten on this forum). So far it's worked for me.

I figure if they put in a fake e-mail, then they just lost out on the rest of the great content I'm sending out. My report is just the tip of the iceberg. Their loss, and hey, maybe after they read my report they'll go back and become a real subscriber.

It could be your lose when your AR company closes your account for a lot of bounces.

Some of them don't get confirmed because the email gets lost in spam due to the wording you used
