You have to have illustrations, dude. Kids want pictures. There are tons of good artists on Fiverr so there's no excuse for having no illustrations in your Kindle book.

Pretty much what I assumed. Any recommendations?

Children's books are doing well in kindle.. Just don't make the story too long unless you are writing a series..

Illustrations are nice, but not necessary. My #1 best seller out of all of my 18 books is a kids book of short stories with ZERO illustrations. It's #607 paid Kindle right now - sold over 1000 copies and 300 shares this month - will earn my $1500-2000 just in December. Just from the one book.

I guess I could always ADD illustrations to it, and maybe it would sell better. Maybe worth a shot. But I would not say that you HAVE to have your kids book illustrated. More important just to get it done and selling.

I recently branched out to add illustrations to another kids book and it's doing OK, but nothing fantastic, maybe earning $70/month. My non-illustrated books are WAY outselling the illustrated ones. But that's not to say that you shouldn't get illustrations done. It sure does add a big cost to the project, though.

One note - if you plan on putting it on CreateSpace, doing a color paperback just for the illustrations is probably not worth it. The illustrated book I talk about above I would have to sell at about $12.99 just to make $0.40 per copy - not worth it. It's doing fine in Kindle, but was a waste of time to try to put in in CS.

    Doubt everything you believe.

    Define Children. How old?

    Well written
Kids don't care. My daughter's favorite stories were fun to read with no real point.

A Tween might want well written, but not a young child.

    Something to think about:
If it's for very young children, make it an interactive app for tablets, where it will read the book out aloud and the illustrations do things.

You can also consider adding some illustrations for your book, but you don't need illustrations on every page, especially depending on the reading level for your book. However, having some illustrations can really make your book stand out. There are a number of ways and places you can get or create quality illustrations.

I think you can do well either way. The best idea might be to have a well written children's book with some illustrations but you don't need a full picture book unless it's for REALLY young kids.

I think the age group definitely matters.

My two youngest are 8 and 9, and they love the chapter books, even when there are no illustrations. I think a good, engaging story is key. But again, it depends on the age group.

A children's book directed at 4-6 year olds may do better with illustrations than without, but I don't see it being a factor in older children.
