How much money would it take for you to stop?

I've found that every man has his price, some number he has in mind which when he reaches, he will be able to stop working and do something else.

My question for you is this; How much money would it take for you to stop working, quit the business, and do something else?

$10 million total. I could easily live on that for the rest of my life as I am a man of simple tastes. I'm 25 now and have a successful Kindle operation that I'm working on massively improving and will then reinvest my money in product creation, affiliate programs etc.

I'm 25 now, I'd hope to be retired by 30 personally.

If I made a lump sum of 10million or else annually 1 million a year. That would easily allow me to do most anything I want.

    Hi,

Personally $100.000/month would be ok for me. Then I could do anything I want and of I could help other people as well.

If you reach such an amount you have to care about other people you love and must help others but in a way that they will appreciate it .

    Thank you,

This is a fantastic question. Thank you for posting it.

Many of the IMers I interview I start by asking a very simple question "How much do you want to make?". Close to 100% of them have no idea and so have no idea how to get there.

For me it would be $2,000,000 which I would then bank and live off the interest (5-7% would be plenty - that would give me about $2,000 a week which is more than enough to live a fantastic life. I've been involved in all sorts of money making businesses (ranging from stock market to public speaking, book selling, forum subscriptions and selling my own high end and low cost products) and have made all sorts of incomes but for me to stop and say "that's enough!" would require that 2mill safely stashed away in several rock solid government guaranteed bank accounts (we have those here in Australia).

If you're going to pay tax, and if you want to buy a house in a capital city, I think you'll need to make double that amount!

Thank you for assessment on what (I know) I need Andrew but you're (inevitably) wrong (because you don't know me). $2,000 a week is all I would need for a very long time. I'm not pulling fancy non-thinking numbers off the top of my head like many who have replied to this thread. I've actually done the calculations on this and tested that exact amount with hundreds of people and even wrote a little book about it. This is all I would need.

With this amount I'll be able to do pretty much anything I would like to do and lead the life I want to live occupying myself all day every day with my hobbies and passions and not having to "work" at making money. To be honest I can't wait to get the whole "money making" thing over and done with. I can think of very little else more disturbing than having to "work" for the rest of my life. I'm not obsessed with money, millionairism or the need for ever expanding growth or consumption. All I need is to set up a lifetime supply of cash and I'm out of here! I have done my calculations and set that amount at a couple of grand a week. I'm already doing it but I have to "work at it" to keep it up. My next aim is to get it passive with little or no risk and that (for me) is cash in the bank with a small interest rate so as not to incur too much risk.

I can't see myself ever buying a house to be honest - renting gives you too many freedoms to give away and a house is a very bad "investment" and the LAST place I'd ever (personally) want to live is in a capital city. A couple of grand a week is more than enough for me. Not everyone is infected with Millionairism's disease and some of us have actually put some thought into this very question - "who much is really "enough"?".

Can one truly live comfortably on $2,000 a month in Australia? Do you have kids? In the US and many other "western" countries that would not even brake the poverty line for a family. No comment on the 2m in the bank, that would be nice, but even that is not a lot if you brake it down to annual income over the course of your life.

Why would you stop if you created an honest, legitimate business instead of hiring and training intelligent help to work it for you?

One thing I learned a long time ago is that there is a level of work hours per day or week that cannot be exceeded by one person. I also learned that it is difficult to hire help.

It's not necessary that the hired help know everything about your business, just trained sufficiently until they can do the work that lets you take time off from your day. If your helpers are remote, they can do different jobs and not be able to compare notes.

      This!

I don't even want to imagine what 'not having something challenging to do' would feel like.

I'd hate to go on a holiday not knowing if what I'd like to work on when I get back.

I hate to sit around the house doing nothing - been that way from Day 1. I get all impatient and cranky when I don't have something to do - the people around me would hate that side of me lol.

So, no particular 'figure' to share am afraid. I might stop working in one industry, but pretty sure I'll be do something or the other at any given time.

If I could continue to accumulate money while living the lifestyle I want, then I would never stop trying to make more money. I could just hire people to manage the things that I find less appealing. If I really didn't need the money, I would find a way to give it to friends/family/charity.

Now, if you asked me what amount of money I'd be "happy" with, then that's a moving target. When I started, it was $500/month. When I got that, it was $2000. And it's gone up and up as my income has increased.

I start businesses, I sell businesses, I research new opportunities, I experiment and learn how to increase earnings in current businesses and I don't do any of it just to make money. It's more of a hobby for me. In addition to very nice paydays I also get a lot of personal fulfillment out of creating something of real value at the same time. I never understood this. If you have enough money not to need to work again then why would you be bored? You don't have to sit around the house doing nothing, the world of your oyster and the only thing stopping you from living a fun life is your imagination. It's like people who say if they won the lotto they'd continue working because you'd be bored, how could you possibly ever be bored when you have enough money to live it up for the rest of your life and do everything you ever dreamed of.

You are so right. This is sad but you're not alone, I see this a lot. So (too) many people equate "making money" with living as if to suggest that if a person isn't selling something they are not living a good, useful or purposeful and active life. Without the "money making activity" they think their brain will shrivel up and die.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

There are millions of things you could be doing to have a full, interesting, exciting and satisfying life other than "making money". Get a hobby, find a passion. Hobbies and passions will stimulate your mind far more and in a healthier way than just figuring out how to sell something for the rest of your life. There's so much more to life! Sure, we need money and we need a "fair bit" of it. A wage is certainly not enough to live a fantastic life but going to the full other extreme is also just as absurd a notion.

In the middle (and much closer to the bottom end) is "financial freedom" which many of us can attain with relative ease. It's just that no one has really ever put much thought into it and we are so petrified of being broke that we just infest our minds with the enormous and often unattainable "goals" (or dreams) and so we aim to never stop "working" until we are trillions of light years away from what we fear --> being broke.

That's 48k a jear and as I will die in about 30 years from now (78 for a male is OK I guess).

So you would have to pay me 1.5 Million U$ to make me STOP using that WSO.

That cost me $9.95 by the way (WOW, what a profit margin).....

Do you wanna wire me that cash or do you prefer to send it cash using Fedex?

This is kind of an interesting question because NO ONE can actually put a number or dollar amount on how much it would take to stop doing what they do for income.

      "$1 Million"

I haven't read all the responses but I'm sure some people will say this. Sure, you might be "rich" by your own standards but rich can come and go. All it takes is one bad move or poor decisions with that $1 Million to be back to square one.

The people who have outrageous numbers such as "Billions" or something along those lines have no idea what they want in life. Those are the people who want the experience of living a life with expensive toys, but how do they really know if they want those things or not? There are some people who buy super charged cars and realize that they didn't really want them at all but they just wanted the experience of having one.

Me: The day I can wake up with a smile, knowing that I will never have to work again but I choose to do so out of choice and not necessity is when I will consider my "stop".

However, I love what I do though so I don't have an exit strategy and I don't have a stop date. Even if I didn't need the money, I would still be doing something IM related, because it's just too much fun to quit.

Own a nice home free & clear. ($1M equity)

    $15M in investments.

    $1.5-2.0M relatively liquid.

I'd then get a 35 hour a week job, maybe servicing and troubleshooting the library system's PCs. Move around, not be stuck in an office. Get them to pay my health insurance and it keeps me busy.

I'd have a low key lifestyle, but spend some money on home theater, two nice vacations a year, long weekends in Vegas. Season tickets to the Yankees. Nothing too conspicuous.

That's a good question. I will always have an onlinebusiness, no matter how much I make. My ultimate goal is $16 million a month, but not necessarily from Internet marketing alone. For me it's more like "sky is the limit", how much of it I make from Internet marketing is more or less irrelevant.

I can and did. I've put a lot of thought into this (as you know) and I have an exact amount in mind. That's not to say I will stop making money because I might have a good idea one day and the money will keep flowing into the bank but I know the exact amount I will need in the bank earning a mild safe interest for me to stop "having" to do anything for money.

100% correct! I laugh and shake my head at some of the replies in this thread.

Fascinating! Sixteen million dollars a month?! What would you want sixteen million dollars a month for? Have you sat down and taken the time to calculate your dream ultimate lifestyle and how much it's actually going to cost?

I've interviewed and hung out with many millionaires (mostly stock market and properties tycoons) and many of them agree that to live in a multi million dollar mansion, have the fancy european sports cars, eat at a restaurant every night, buy any clothes they want, throw money around to friends who need a hand AND travel anywhere, anytime and stay in 5 star resorts every time and even the odd helicopter flight would cost about $350,000 - $500,000 a year. I've actually lived like that before and after a while it's not much better than having "enough" to live a great urban lifestyle. A house is a house and in the end once you settle down a comfortable reasonably sized normal upper middle class suburban (or farm) house is just the same as a multi million dollar mansion (unless you're trying to impress someone else).

Sixteen million dollars a month?! Really? I mean that's fine if that's what you want but have you really done any calculations or have you just pulled a figure off the top of your head that "seems" like it would be WAY more than enough? I study the exact topic and question of this thread and I would be fascinated to know how you came to this amount.

Vinnie, why would you need a 35 hour a week job with $15,000,000 in investments just so you can get health insurance? To keep you busy? Don't you have any hobbies or passions to keep you busy?

Good question. First, I wouldn't need the job. I would like to make myself productive in an area that I have some affection. I like and support the library system, and I'd like to end my career with them.

I also think it is important for children to see their parent working and productive.

Insurance can cost over $2,000 a month and if I can get it covered for doing and supporting something I like, then why not?

I would live in ny, where a million dollar home is not particularly extravagant. Homes like that cost money to maintain. I figure I'd live on a few hundred thousand a year, before taxes.

So it's not about the money.

I don't think that applies to money. If I was to give you 500 BILLION DOLLARS would THAT be enough? I think it's sad that a life should be consumed till death with the desire and activity for getting more and more and more money. Sure, we need a fair bit but I have other things I want to do in my life too. I have hobbies and passions that could (and should) easily consume every waking hour of every day until death and none of them have anything to do with the unatural desire to just spend my days making more and more and more money. When I've got enough - I'm outa here!

If you have such a number then I humbly suggest you stop now and go work on something that actually interests you. The money will come a lot faster and easier when you're not slogging it out at something you hate simply because you believe work has to suck.

Does this mean you can go watch TV for the rest of your life? No, absolutely not.

But it does mean there are plenty of things you can get paid to do that you'll actually enjoy.

I'm in the IM niche because I LOVE business, I've always loved business and I'll continue to be in the niche until it stops fascinating me.

Find the happy middle ground between stuff you like doing and stuff other people want done and your life will get immeasurably easier.

I enjoy having a home business immensely.....I enjoy watching things evolve.

That being said I also have other hobbies, and with the right amount of money new doors are opened up such as offline businesses. Its a hard question to answer....... no less then $20 million after taxes.

I can't answer this, because I focus on making progress rather than $$$$ ...so if I'm making $1000 now, I'll go for more ...if I'm making $5000 right now, I'll not give up!! See it's progression

    Best,
    David

well really, depends on what i want to do in the next few years. I will always do something in business, its what i love. But i guess to give it all away for at least 5 years? 5 million clean after tax goodbye, i can put in a fund and get what I want, and have enough to start another 5 enterprises in future.

I don't think you'll be able to stop with any amount. Maybe stop one kind of business, but then the desire to try your hands in other markets, that may be potential golds, would still be there.
