Size Doesn't Matter...It's how you use it!

Huge? Big? Average? Small? In the never ending debate of whether size matters or not the answer will always depend on who exactly you ask....and then there will be those who pipe up that size does indeed not matter at all!

So is bigger really better? Or is it about using it correctly?

I have a small one (In comparison to most) and I would like to think that I know how to use it....

And I hope that by now you've realized that I am talking about my list....

In comparison to most marketers out there my list is small perhaps even tiny, partly because I deactivated a larger list a month or so back to start afresh, and partly because I have been terribly lazy with my list building...

But the point is that my tiny list is very responsive to the things I send out and as it gets larger I hope that it remains that way.

So for me it is about using your list in the right way (I know I am biased due to my shortcomings in the size department but...), it's about treating them as people. Listening to them, emailing them, responding to their emails. Its about getting to know them as people and not just another stat.

Blasting them with 30 offers a month just to keep the $$$ seems far too short term as a business model. I'm sure it has its place and some people are extremely profitable with it, but in the long term how many of those people stick about and actually succeed?

Perhaps if we all treated out subscribers as the "unique visitor" that our stats packages call them, we all might have more responsive lists. Perhaps I am entirely wrong and the spirit of the season is blinding me...

I know what I would rather do with my list, so what do you think?

    Hello wfhblueprints,

I really agree with your opinion! If you have 100 subscribers, you help them and you see them as people then you can make money from the same people in the long run. Being a Friend of your subscribers and showing them that you are an Authority will end to a positive result for your business.

It is better to have 100 responsive people than 1000 deadheads.

    Thank you,
    Zouras

Its Response Vs Size which all comes down to ROI. Period.

If you don't track this, you are losing money.

I have always liked to try and squeeze out the best results from small lists, this way as you grow your list you will be getting even better results than most people

I recently joined safe swaps to do the odd ad swap (not every day like most people in there)

I have added a small segment of only around 400 subscribers which i am growing with ad swaps and i am able to generate between 50 - 70 clicks from that tiny list with a single mail out

There are countless other people in there that can't even generate 20 clicks with lists over 1000

This quite clearly shows that they are doing something seriously wrong and are probably hammering their lists with garbage and offer after offer

This is totally true. I have huge lists that are not making anything close to my small lists. I find it really hard to keep the relationship in a good condition with my bigger lists...

    Small list = big profits

    Huge lists = profits + headache+headache+ more headache :-)

Huge list with incredible relationship = big profits

      Am I missing something here?

        Certainly...

The gist of this post is that some people have an obsession with huge lists which they pelt with crap all day long, thinking that its all about how many subscribers on the list. If they changed their mentality they would be more successful!
