Software that only allows web visitors after they provide contact info?

I understand there might not be a specific software for this, but how is this done?

    I use WP Member Champ from Jason Fladlien and Wil Mattos. It's not cheap ($97), but it's very easy to set up and use (WP plugin).

    You can set it to Free Membership and then hide content contingent upon visitors signing up. You can also protect file downloads, which is handy for us product creators.

    The only drawback is that (last time I checked) you can't set multiple membership levels. But again, I love how easy it is to use. Hardly any learning curve.
