Yahoo Answers for list building - has anyone had trouble with it?

So I spent a large part of the day carefully answering questions on Yahoo just to test it out. I pasted the link to my squeeze page in the source box. It worked pretty well actually, I got 10 subscribers over the day but I just checked my inbox and ALL of my answers have been reported by some fool. My day's work has been evaporated.

The reason I checked Yahoo Answers out was because it's been recommended in a LOT of threads here, yet none of them mentioned any troubles so I'm wondering if it's just me.

It can be hit or miss but linking directly to a squeeze page is always going to cause more problems as people will be suspicious. Link it to a website or blog full of content and you'll have more chance of your links sticking but there will always be some answers that get reported from genuine users of the site and your competition.

Maybe you should try reading the TOS for Yahoo Answers.

I did. They say you shouldn't post unrelated links. The content I give away is related to what I post.

If you're not allowed to link to your own site, why is YA recommended over here as a good free traffic option?

A squeeze page is not content, it is a sales page even though you are not actually selling something. "Payment" i.e. persons email in exchange for "goods" a report or something.

try linking to a content page on your site with opt-in for your free report on the sidebar.

I'd guess mainly because they think it's an easy drive-by, quick hit method. Fact is, you'll end up getting your IP banned if you keep it up.

Yeah, kinda sucks. Yet another blow to my traffic generation efforts lol.

If this happens again I'll have to let YA go and come back to it if I decide to make a blog. Hopefully, it's just a one-time troll but if not, my only traffic source will be the forum posting you suggested.

Why are you so insistent on limiting your traffic sources? There are hundreds of ways to drive traffic to sites out there, read about them and use them.

You're right, thanks for calling me out on that. There are more options but they require significantly more effort (press releases, youtube, etc). I guess I felt discouraged seeing that my easier traffic sources (fb and yahoo) were getting shot down and I have yet to see any results which makes me wary of investing more time into another source that might end up futile.

My experience with YA is the same. All of my answers get flagged despite my efforts to provide thoughtful answers. I think YA is better for driving traffic to a content/adsense site. Any site with any kind of transactional component will get your answer flagged.

You can work around this if you're willing to put your black hat on, but I think you're better off in forums and discussion groups.

Sadly, that does sound about right. The warnings say my YA account will get blocked if it keeps up.

So I'm beginning to understand lol. I'll probably have to lay off YA until when I decide I have to make it a blog to move forward.

Ah don't write me off just yet. I merely felt discouraged is all. I'll whittle down my options one by one until I've had a go at all recommended sources. I just face some down time following a hit that makes me doubt my strategy. Fb yesterday and yahoo today. But the last thing I want is to say my project failed because of me.

I'll be experimenting with blog posting and youtube next. Beyond that, I'm not sure as far as free traffic goes but I'll see what's out there.

Also, try and narrow down your niche. I saw that you were going after muscle building, your squeeze page gives a secret that tripled your lifts, those are two different niches. Why? If most people tried to increase their lifts the muscle would follow. Just some thoughts, your threads are actually helping me re- think my own sites
LOL that's exactly the feeling I got after reading the questions. I'm sending you a PM regarding Mike Geary's approach.

I have never done Yahoo Answers but if your running into problems where you are getting flagged for content, why not direct them to multiple sources of information which is yours just spread over a mixture between your website and various social 2.0 sources like squidoo. It's very easy to set up a lense or a hubpage to point them to valuable information, just make sure your 2.0 page has links to your site.

I never had luck with YA. When I got started in IM almost 3 years ago, I used to spend hours trying to link my sales (not squeeze) pages there. lol..

This ^^^^^ is the key question.

It varies enormously from niche to niche. If you're in a niche in which competitors are going to "flag" your posts, it's going to be a real uphill struggle.

It works very well for some people, very badly for others.

I've done well with it, over the years - had traffic and sales from it. I give long, detailed, value-adding answers and put a self-serving link (to a content-rich page) in about 15% of them.

I've never had much long term success with Yahoo Answers and in most cases any questions I answer with a link ends up getting deleted, so yes
it can help with some traffic, but overall from what I have seen it's not the
best place to waste your time on.

    All the best,

No I am not a great fan of Yahoo as far as answering and getting traffic from there. Sending straight to a squeeze page might not have been the best idea either.

I have learnt a lesson in how not to use Yahoo. Next time allow yourself no more that one hour to answer questions. The same goes for forums as well. Try not to spend too much time because there are other tactics you can use to get traffic.

Yahoo Answer will ban you if you keep promote your salespage/ squeeze page link . There are many people there that have higher ranking will report your answer if they find it not appropriate. Yahoo Answer is not a best place to find traffic now.

Yahoo Answers is not the best place to spam with a link to your squeeze page. They are extremely strict, and rightfully so, about random irrelevant links being flooded all over the place under the pretext of sourcing.

I have worked on various projects that involved building high reputation accounts on Y!A. However, in all of those projects, I was extremely careful about questions I would actually use my client's website as a source to answer. The key is to find relevant questions using the search bar, and then answering them with a link to a RELEVANT page from your website from which you are getting your answer. Do not just go around answering random questions and putting your link into the source.

If you post anything irrelevant at all, somebody WILL report it. Users get rewards for keeping the site free from spam and unwanted links. Make sure you are actually answering the question, and more importantly, any links you put as sources are in fact sources for your answer.

You might just be able to post one or two answers daily if your niche is not something people ask questions on, but you will attract relevant traffic from that question forever since Y!A ranks well on all search engines and it will constantly refer people to your page.

Most importantly, NEVER link directly to your squeeze page. That will be reported on virtually every occasion.

    I hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll be sure to ease up on this and use YA more strategically as part of my overall traffic generation plan.

Chris and Alexa, to answer your question, my niche is in muscle building.

The same thing happened to me recently, although I'd been posting there for a few years without any issues. As soon as I posted on the dating and fitness niches someone flagged me up and my account was suspended. I think they are tightening their rules just like Google & are having a purge of accounts.

I have the same issue, only about 10% of my answers ever slip through the net. I really don't think YHA is viable TBH.
