Moving to Google Chrome - Do you have any tips, tricks, suggestions, caveats?

I'm thinking of making Chrome my main browser. I thought I would shorten the stroke on the learning curve by asking those that have some experience with it.

Please share your best stuff.

Regards... and Happy New Year!

I think you'll actually find it very straight forward. I personally have installed hardly any addons, it pretty much works great out of the box.

I do find though that it, just like Firefox, has it's quirks. So I typically have both open. If one chokes on something I just open it in the other.

One good tip though is to install LastPass on Firefox (or your main browser) and get it to pickup all your saved logins. Then you can install LastPass on Chrome too and use it to sign into your accounts, so you don't get stuck trying to remember access details.

I already checked about LastPass availability. No LastPass would be a deal killer for me.

Nothing to tell you, they are all basically the same. With Chrome you are just Google more free information.
Different browsers have different features and ad ons. I personally use Firefox most of the time but I have all 3 of the "Big" browsers

I prefer Chrome for a few reasons. The Recently Closed Tab feature has saved my a lot of time when I accidentally closed the wrong one. The Open New Incognito Window makes cookie-free page loading for testing real easy. It's easily the fastest and most stable browser I've ever used.

Only caveat is that I also have no add-ons installed other than an SEO plugin and the AVG Chrome extension that comes with AVG.

I always thought I was married to Firefox for ever. Then, after a recent upgrade it started crashing on me so I switched to Chrome, and so far I'm very happy. I installed a few extensions, one of which was AdBlock, the same as I have on Firefox, and I love the way it imported all my logins from Firefox, which made the switch especially easy.

One thing I haven;t figured out yet is how to place a Google search box up in the top right hand of the screen, the same as I had with Firefox. At the moment it involves an extra click on the 'home' icon.

Also, if, as I do, you work with multiple computers, sign in to each with the same Google account, and Chrome will sync all the installations - a great feature.

This ones easy; You don't have to!

If you type something into the URL bar that is not a website, it will go to google and display search results for that word/phrase. Simpler than having 2 text fields.

I recommend the Google Global extension. It allows you to search on search engines in different countries.

Chrome is way more faster then firefox when dealing with heavy Flash/javascript sites.
Also they save your bookmarks when you have signed in, which is really cool feature..
So you can access them anywhere just by logging in,..

If you have a window open in Chrome and you open a second window it will always open minimized and as far as I know, there is no way around this. I find it very annoying. Good luck, Ed.

      ...What?

Why do you need constantly open windows? You can just keep opening new tabs.

Also, I've never seen Chrome open a new minimized window, it always is maximized for me. Having to click a window to maximize it though is no more work than clicking on the annoying "Winrar" message that pops up every time you open it.

    I use.

    Last Pass
    Awesome screenshot.
    Show long Title Tag.
    Google single click sign in.
    Gmail checker
    Speed Dial 2
    Google Global.

I set my bookmarks bar up with folders running across the top, something like:

    Resources, Tools, Incubator, Clients, etc.

    That may help.

I've been using Chrome for a while without any addons and found it great until 2 weeks ago when it started doing this annoying thing where when I clicked to open a new tab it starts loading but takes ages to fully load and if even if I enter an URL and hit enter then it starts trying to load the page but suddenly the new page tab open will over ride it and it doesn't open the page I want. I type quickly and want things to happen instantly and this annoys me. I thought it might be a virus or spyware trying to collect info but have scanned my pc multiple and nothing.

It has done that to me a few times also, and I am not sure if I am causing it, because I type so fast, that I might actually hit a button or something else on my laptop that causes this.

So, when it happens, which is rare, I just reset my whole system to a previous default date and its fixed.

      Care to elaborate ?

Are you saying that past cookies, Google has embedded code into the browser which sends you targeted ads on pages you visit?

      Data, sources?

      Re cookies...

Click the "Under the Hood" tab. Click "Content settings...". Select "Cookies" in the bar on the left, and choose "Block sites from setting any data".

Not to mention is doesn't really matter which browser you're using..

        Google is going to know.

Hell tons of small companies can track you so I think they wont be having a problem regardless of the browser you use

While I appreciate your sentiment, if I could ask that we stay on topic. I'm really interested in how you get the most out of Chrome if you use it.

          Thanks,

Google Chrome has a sync option which is great, it allows you to sync all your most popular tabs and bookmarks across all other devices that you are using chrome on, such as ipod, ipad, laptops, pc's etc....

Pretty cool, because you do not have to go through transfer all your bookmarks from one device to another.

I've been using it for the past few months solely, and I really like it, of course I still use firefox, and ie, and even opera when needed, since I do webdesign.

I am very pleased with Google chrome so far.

So, I made a mistake and moved to Google Chrome long time ago and I used to think it is a good idea, but with recent issues keep crashing, i would say firefox was always a good option.

Firefox doesn't do that out of the box, but with the xmarks add on, it does.

Me too. I switched from ff to chrome for 2 or 3 months, but there were a couple of things I didn't like about it, and it started having a couple of problems. Back to ff now.
