DuckDuckGo ? New Search Engine

Hey everyone,

I ran across this and have been checking it out. I like the concept and its really clean. I've been using this to help increase my own search engine traffic but to also look for new ideas to market.

If you watch the video in the link below you'll see how they use a "!" function to automatically load up pages. This could skyrocket visitors if you are the one landing on that 1st page.

Yes, I like it too. It's clean and it does not seem to duplicate results. It only shows the most important result from a given domain, if I got it right, and not a bunch of them as Google for instance does quite often. This allows you to check out more sites quickly as opposed to wading through a lot of garbage.

DuckDuckGo also respects your privacy and doesn't keep records of your
searches. I like that about them.

Yes, I was reading that too and that is a definate plus, that's one of the many things I don't like about Google they try to track everything you do online.

What SE is DuckDuckGo powered by? Is it Bing? Someone mentioned it, but I forget which SE.

Looks like Bing/Yahoo, but not exactly the same algorithm.

IxQuick and Startpage do the same thing. They say they don't even store your IP address.

The bad thing about DuckDuckGo, in my opinion, is the Yahoo! style results. They're no good. I tried DuckDuckGo for a week and I liked the privacy aspect of it, but in terms of relevancy, it sucked. I didn't like trading search quality for privacy. I tried to like DuckDuckGo.

Startpage is better. They pull results from Google and they don't store your IP address or track you like Google does. Of course, all of the tracking and analysis of search history that Google does is what allows it to be better at giving custom tailored results which are often more relevant to a user's location and search habits.

Tried IxQuick for a few weeks, couldn't find a thing I was looking for so I went back to the better devil I know.

If you're talking about Google, then I wouldn't argue that IxQuick would give you better results. There's no contest. But I do think that IxQuick and Startpage return way better results than DuckDuckGo.

Well, yes and no. In some ways IxQuick results are not as good as Google's, in some other ways Google's results are garbage and cannot compete with IxQuick.

I like IxQuick. It's good to have more choice than just Google and Yahoo/Bing. The Duck is okay too.

The name sounds a little funny (A). It is providing a little slight results from Bing.

DuckDuckGo was launched in Sep 2008, so it's hardly a new search engine.

That said, a lot of people still haven't heard of it.

@mojojuju Thanks for that, I'm going to check Startpage out.

I guess the debate on how sites track us will be going on for a while. For a
half-humorous, half-frightening take on tracking, take a look this from DDG: http://donttrack.us/

I like DDG because they are the best search engine on TOR.
But on the Clear there are some that give better results.

Really wish Warriors could launch a good SE and manage
to make it popular... then I would actually care about SEO.

  • I've been using DuckDuckGo since late 2011, and by far, it hasn't disappointed me one bit. The cool aesthetics, the simple yet humorous logo, and how it doesn't track or log any of your search results definitely tickles my desire to use it more frequently.

I have given this a quick try and will probably make it my default engine for a week... sort of a longer trial. What's amazing is the !bang feature. Tried !yt and !fb and this works. This indeed saves you a lot of time, especially if you're a heavy search user (researchers, writers, so on).

I think it's perfect timing that they highlight that privacy matter today, which the PRISM issue is still quite hot. Hope developers help this SE grow.

People are using it more and more. Especially with the alleged spying of the NSA and their PRISM program.

I think their search results are pretty bad. If you want good search results and privacy, Startpage is a good choice.
