Making money by playing games

Hi guys,

Is there any way to make money by playing games?

Besides making a site about the game and getting traffic to it, how can I make money on it by just simply playing?

Are there any companies that pay people to play video games?

You can apply to be a tester, but it's usually temporary gigs from different companies.

Yes, they're called in-game managers or (GMs).

    The requirements for them are:

    - You must be free for 40 hours at a minimum and it's not uncommon for them to use you for 60
    - You must deal with some of the most ridiculous questions and in-game problems possible
    - Your English and grammar needs to be impeccable

There's also "QA" or "Quality Assurance" which have some requirements like that as well. You need to have great attention to detail, willingness to work long hours, etc.

Or.. you could write up an info-product on how to "make xxxx gold in I'm A Unicorn Land 3". Plenty of people buy guides/gold/virtual items for their games.

Pfft, they sold out in the 3rd. I'm A Unicorn Land 2 Game-of-the-Year Edition was so much better. They gave you all the DLC for free, and you even got an inflatable unicorn and strategy guide.

BTW, there are a few other things you can do to make money while playing games, but it's against some game's TOS. Most RPGs and FPSs give you items in-game for completing quests, or they drop when you die (like in TF2). You can setup an ecommerce shop where you sell these items, or you might be able to sell in-game currency with some games.

Just find a way to get rare items or lots of money, and then sell it to players at about 10-20% below the common retail value. But, make sure you check the game's TOS before doing this. There are some high-profile cases (especially with WoW) of people being sued for selling items and gold.

You can also level up characters and sell them to people. For example, there was a time when you could sell a level 60 WoW character for about $200-$600 depending on the gear. I never did it, so I don't know how well it works, but I heard some people made a killing with this.

  • You can also make a Let's Play (LP) series on YouTube and have it monetized. However, I would suggest to read the game's company ToS before doing so. Some companies (like Electronic Arts, for example), allows the creation of Let's Play but does not allow monetizing it, while some other companies (like Mojang and Nexon) allows the creation of Let's Plays and allows the monetization of it as well.

You can also offer powerleveling services or gold selling, but like the above statement, make sure you read the terms of service and the game rules before proceeding. You might be in a real dilemma if the game doesn't allow these types of services.

The best way is to find a job in the company. Go to the game's company website and click on "Career". Some companies offer Game Moderator (GM) jobs, Testers, Analysts, and Customer Assistance.
