Wordpress and HTACCESS problems. Please help!!!

why would my htaccess file get deleted from visiting the permalinks page in the Wordpress Admin?

This just started happening. If I have certain rules in my htaccess file, and I even visit the permalinks page in Wordpress, the file literally gets gutted. I don't know if it gets deleted and replaced with a blank one, or if it simply gets emptied..but something is going on and I can't figure it out.

The .htaccess is owned by apache, so its not a permissions issue I don't think.

thoughts?

Are the permissions set so that WordPress can write to the .htaccess file? If so, maybe WP is overwriting it. The permalinks page is where WP would normally write to your .htaccess file if you save changes.

Wordpress modifies the file only if you press "Save" in the permalinks admin panel. Are you sure it's get deleted - usually the htaccess file is invisible and is not show up in some FTP programs by default, maybe it's still there but you just can't see it in your FTP ?

If it's invisible in the FTP, try to right click while in your root directory, Choose "View File" or "View" and enter .htaccess as the filename. If it's still there, you should see it

I don't trust those auto generation stuff anyways and always edit my .htaccess by hand
