I´m thinking about buying Camtasia. but I wonder what does Camtasia has that Corel Videostudio Pro X5 does not have. Camtasia is $256.99 (Amazon) while Corel Videostudio Pro X5 only costs $54.78 (Amazon price).

  • Not heard of Videostudio before but the reviews on Amazon read well.

The quick answer is to download a free trial of each (they both offer that) and see which you get on better with.
  • Just like @trevord92 said,Download the trial version for each one and decide then.
Also look at the Amazon reviews and google the names and see what reviews do you get.
  • Yes, taking the free trials is a possibility. But I´m new to both of them and afraid there is a steep learning curve for beginners.

But I think I just try Corel Videostudio Pro X5 first and see if it can do what I want to do. I just want to make screencasts and be able to edit them. I can´t edit them with Snagit, for instance, and Snagit is nearly as expensive as Corel Videostudio Pro X5.
  • I bought Corel Videostudio Pro when it was version X2. I found it clunky, not intuitive, and it just didn't do what I was looking for.

Then I bought Camtasia, version 6 as I recall. No comparison! Camtasia was light-years ahead, and much easier to use.

I am now using Camtasia 8. It is a well thought-out program, and there are numerous tutorials on YouTube.

That said, there is a free, open source software - Camstudio. While I have never used it, I hear others recommend it, and the price is right. You might give it a look before you plunk down that $54.

  • I've been using camtasia now for over a yr and have no complaints.

I recommend like some others here said, to get the trial for both an figure which one is best for you.

Camtasia even has a free version so look into that.

    Good luck!
  • I have the fright mare known as video studio x5 pro. By the way, it is NOT easy to use. Fact is, I rarely use it, but there are some plug ins that are awesome. Those are not from corel - no surprise. Camtasia is far superior. I use it a lot to create how to videos for you tube and with camtasia you have an option to do narration with a microphone which is super.

Forget about video studio pro. It is not that great of a program.
  • I have tried both. But Camtasia is the cleanest Software out there.Video studio is very complex to work with.Camtasia is the easiest to work with.
  • Well, this is not what I hoped to hear but as it seems there is no way around Camtasia. I hate things that are complicated to work with and don´t want to waste the time learning a lot.

    • Camtasia is well worth the time spent learning it and if used properly it could easily repay you ten times over the initial cost when you use it to promote your products (be it your own or as an affiliate).
  • Yes sure, Camtasia must also be learned, but if it is not nearly as complex as Corel Videostudio Pro X5 seems to be it could save me a lot of time and peace of mind. Making the videos, researching products, getting the videos rank on YouTube etc. is already work enough. Therefore I prefer the easiest solutions possible to get things done. I have no desire to turn into a video software specialist nerd.
  • I just bought Camtasia 8 and it's light years ahead of anything else and I did a lot of research to be able to say that.

I used Camtasia 6 before this recent purchase so I had some experience of using it, but by damn its fantastic. Steep price tag but that's how quality software is.
  • As Don said, there are tons of tutorials for Camtasia on YouTube, but there are also many tutorials on the Techsmith site as well. These help shorten the learning curve considerably.

I use Camtasia 5 or 6 ... might be time to upgrade. I knew 7 was out but didn't know 8 was out.
  • I used camtasia a long time. It seem to be better.
  • Camtasia all the way - Videostudio pro is nowhere near as easy to use. Buying Camtasia is a great investment in your business.

And Camstudio, IMHO, is nowhere near a suitable alternative. It's difficult to use and clogs up your hard drive with massive files.
