if you have $1000 to spend in less then 10 days - how would you build a list of video gamers?

Ok, so here is a real life dilemma with some cash behind it...

If you had $1000, what would you do to build a GOOD list of video gamers fast...

Let the suggestions roll

The free mobile app we are promoting is aimed at people who play online with big groups of friends. MMO is a massive target for this, but so are our three main target games:
Fifa, Black Ops2 and Halo 4.

Perhaps I didnt clarify this in the original text.

Conduct a contest that will target gamers and use the $1000 as prize

First off, I'd try to narrow down "video gamers" to something a little more manageable by demographics - age, education, income level, even gender - and perhaps type of game preferred - fantasy, first person shooter, MMORPG, etc.

Then I'd find a good list broker and work with them to get the splits most likely to work with the promotion I had in mind. Spend the thousand on a test run of my promotion.

        @ John

We have a very good idea of our demographic including down to the salaries etc (my business partner is a User Experience professional so first thing we nailed).

My question is: where do we find these list brokers?

Do a search for "email list brokers" and you'll come up with a bunch, from the big boys like InfoUSA and Hoover's to smaller outfits. If you go with the smaller outfits, check references and ask about how they accumulate their lists. I imagine you already know that, but I wanted to add it for others...

      This. Definitely this.

It's already a competitive arena (not in terms of products, although that as well, but in terms of the people in it), so a contest would go over extremely well.

We could do this, BUT - we would still need to get eyeballs on it. That is perhaps the issue I'm having...

Ah I understand... My thinking would be, in each and everyone of them games (Maybe minus fifa) they have their clans/guilds. The popular ones have people going to their forums/websites everyday to see where they are in tournements, playing tips and just general discussion. The problem with anything to do with games, you need it to go viral within the game itself if you want to get a lot of people using it. The only way for that to happend is if people like curse (One of the MMO leaders for addons and plugins) will promote it for you. So in my oppinion, find the source which will give you social recognition within the market and start there.

So true - but i guess I left many details out this post! As with all tech you only really get one shot with using your big guns and tech products are rarely perfect in their first versions... so our aim is to pay for some traffic to help test us, gain some feedback and some stats then hit all the major players once we are 100% sure it works right and that users like the way it works. (We have some major journalists watching us so we know we are on the right track - just perhaps not there yet).

How about an open beta test? You could have conditions such as testing, reviews, feed back etc... The top 10 people get 100 bucks each for their feed back and support. Just a thought to, instead of just paying them money, how about best person gets an xbox 360, second gets something like a gaming mouse and keyboard and the remaing 8 get a game. You could easily find people to beta test it, there are loads of forums which you could easily partner with to try it out.

Go to the sites, where the gamers hang out and either buy banners or text ads. PPC can also be a solution, depending on the site/keywords and costs per click...

go to clickbank and contact the biggest gaming sites on there and ask if you can buy a solo ad going out to their list

    Or...

locate some of the biggest sites in the gaming industry online and go to alexa and quantcast and put the site in there and look at the sites that they go to after and the ones they come from before then visit those sites and if they're building a list contact them and buy a solo ad

advertising directly to someones list is one of the best ways to get lazer targeted traffic

it's more tricky for niches outside the IM niche but on the up side people that are in other niches won't be as good at marketing as an actual marketer :-)

    1. Buy banner ads at Video games forum.
    2. Buy Buyer keyword for PPC.
    3. Make 5 to 10 youtube video.
    4. Create CPA offer
    5. Use facebook ads.
    6. Find fanpage that related to your game and buy pay per post advertisement.

I would make a quick website relative to the type of gamer you're looking for and post your own or embed game walkthroughs on the site. then, you'd have your own ad on the site and can also do an adwords campaign to the site.
but you really need to target your market with this one as there are tons of types of gamers out there.

In my experience it is best to locate a popular gamer and pay them to endorse your product online and offline. That depends on if the person likes the product enough to endorse it. Also, some clans are actually companies and are open to endorsements on all levels.

    Tip = Intel, Europe

    PPV

Gaming is an easy niche to target using PPV. Just find out (you probably already know) the hot spots where gamers hang out and target those URLs.

    Cheers,
    Coby

P.S. to save money on PPV - bid on the interior pages rather than just the main domain (this also helps target your traffic better as well).

Actually Coby I want to know more!

I'm guessing (correct me if I'm wrong) I can find links to PPV options on these bigger sites, or is there a few central sites that house all their advertising packages?

        Overview - Curse

They have an ad system which goes on pretty much all major MMO sites, minecraft, mmo-champion etc... Might be worth a look and look into costs etc...

There are a few ways to target traffic with PPV...

        1) Run of network (RON) - this is the cheapest traffic, but also the least targeted as this shows to their "whole" network and the targeting is limited.

        2) Keywords - this is similar to PPC

        3) Categories - works similar to keywords

        4) URLS - you target specific URLS that you gather on your own.

As for pricing - RON traffic can be as cheap as $4 for 1000 views and targeted traffic starts at about 1 cent per view and goes up from there. Typically you will pay around 1 1/2 to 2 cents per view on targeted campaigns.

Here two places you can start:

        LeadImpact
Pay Per View PPV Cost Per View CPV Contextual Online Advertising Network

        Hope this helps

        Cheers,
        Coby

Some very valuable suggestions in this thread! Facebook ads would allow you to get started very quickly and with strong targeting. Maybe split the $1000 contest idea to $500 for the winner and spend the other $500 on ads to get exposure?

I see that you mentioned "in less than 10 days." If that's the case, banner-ads that offers a fixed price (usually 30 days) is out. Unless, it's by PPC or PPV.

I see people mentioning about organizing a contest that offers $1000 in cash price. Organizing a contest is definitely your best bet in gaming niche.. but if you were to offer all $1000 in cash price then you'll left with nothing to advertise or promote your contest (if you budgeting yourself to just $1000).

Why not offer $500 on cash price and the remaining $500 on advertisement? Offer a contest which requires people to share/like in order to participate. This will make your contest go VIRAL automatically.

Perhaps for your advertisement budget.. you could break down to $200 to facebook PPC, $200 on related blog networks (PPV or PPC banner-ads), $50 to buy some likes or share and $50 to buy re-tweet.

This is just what I'll do if I have $1,000 to spend in less than 10 days to build up my video gaming niche portfolio.

    Good luck with your endeavor

    Dee,

Do you have any assets in terms of content on a website that would go down really well and gamers would be attracted too?

Also do you have any assets that can be given away in exchange for an opt-in?

Just an idea to add to the other suggestions -

    1) Start running a pop over on specific posts on your blog that are highly targeted
    2) Set the pop over to appear with an opt-in box with an attractive headline, freebie if possible & set the timer for the pop over to appear to 45 seconds.
    3) Submit your gaming related content to Outbrain.com
    4) Buy traffic from Outbrain (You can get the price down to like 0.03 cents or something insane)

For gaming related content Outbrain will get you some really high quality traffic - it will promote your content on websites like Computerandvideogames.com and other related websites.

Your content needs to be approved by Outbrain but they're usually quite quick to approve so even if you use a different approach to this you'll still be best buying traffic this way because of the time taken to get banner ads etc sorted.

Of course you would need to tweak this to whatever assets you have available but for that budget you could afford to get 5-10 high quality articles written up and still have enough cash to buy LOADS of traffic.

    Just a thought anyway.

P.S. - If you want to know what kind of articles would be best to use then look at N4G.com and look for the "hottest" articles that are trending right now (this site would also be great to target with advertisements actually because of the epic levels of traffic and it's full of hardcore gamers).
