hi all,
i hope you can save me some time in research.

I am going to build a website for a game.
I want it to be able to accept user submissions (stories, videos, etc).
I also want it to have a site-based wiki.
I also want it to have a site-based facebook like system.

Which would be the best CMS to use ?
thanks.

      ok thanks.

i have another question concerning wordpress.

I will have one domain with godaddy, I would want to use wordpress for the blog seperate from the image gallery seperate from the wiki, etc.

do you know if wordpress allows multiple installations so I could keep the various functions seperate ?
      thanks.

Well, I've got two scenarios that I use. I have a main domain and then I have 44 subdomains under that domain, all with Wordpress installed.

On another site I have the main domain and then I have a folder, like
        maindomain.com/folder

and the main domain and the folder both have Wordpress installed.

        Works fine.

Just create a new folder on the hosting account and you can have as many WordPress installations as you want under the same domain

        ie. mycrazyblog.com/blog, mycrazyblog.com/forum, mycrazyblog.com/wiki, .....

You can do multiple installs, but it requires some fiddling with your database and config files.

      Wiki
      Haven't used this
Open Source Wiki Scripts - OpenSourceCMS

This is a great social network script, but not free
      phpFox - Social Networking Script

Forum: vbulletin or phpBB. Probably lots of others.

Image Gallery: Just Google image gallery. There's tons.

This looks interesting for a niche social community.

I wonder how many subscribers your website could handle before problems started arising that are beyond a non-coders skill set.

If you do more serious things on Wordpress, you'll have to overload it with many, many plugins which means a lot of pressure on the server. Starting from a few hundred visitors a day you can then forget shared hosting. Your host demands you to have VPS. And, beware that the cheapest VPS plans make your site snail-slow. With any considerable traffic you'd need a hosting plan that costs at least 50 dollars a month, and the need for a dedicated server would not be high up and far away.

It's so much better to build such things on Drupal.

Basically, yes, WordPress is easier, Drupal has a much longer learning curve, it has less themes available, Drupal comes without an editor (which is not hard to install), and yes, the basic version of WordPress is lighter than Drupal, the database smaller etc. But that applies ONLY to the basic out of the box version. Add just some plugins, and the need for more server resources starts to grow fast.

Drupal has been developed by more programming oriented people, and for more professional users, WordPress - mostly with easability in mind, and lots of plugins have been developed by amateur programmers, who just want to make a buck. Install one of those and you'll hear from your host.

You can find more WordPress developers, and they cost less, but the amount of hackers who also know WordPress like the inside of their own pocket and mostly target this CMS is also immensely greater.
