Do you use Skype for your business? If so be careful

On 12/29 I had an unauthorized purchase on my skype account for a International calling package.

We work online and unfortunately hackers are a downside that we must be aware of and take steps to prevent the damage they can cause to our business.

It for some reason had not entered my mind that I was vulnerable when it came to my Skype account until this happened to me.

The rep handling my chat request for a refund gave me the link to skype security. On this page are helpful security steps to take to safeguard not only your skype account but to stay safe elsewhere online.

Those of us dealing with online customers have no idea about the person behind the screen as the business relationship is first forged, and unfortunately hackers can be unseen and unknown to us or they might be disguised as a prospective customer, so it is important that we all learn about and then implement safety measures. It is also important to stay abreast of current known threats so we can avoid something that might be messy or costly to clean up if we should become a victim of hackers.

I found this article from CNBC "How to Defend Against a Cyberattack" which discusses how hackers infiltrate networks, and how to protect your business from this threat. It mentions that hackers disquise themselves as a customer, co-worker or even a family member and then provides a link for you to click on in order to see a document or view a pic of yourself.

Take care everyone and may all your online dealings be safe and prosperous ones.

    Laura,

Do you know how they got access to your account information? What adjustments did you make to strengthen your security?

    Thanks and Happy New Year,

I was unaware that people actually paid for skype...we've been in business for years and used it for free, never entered any "payment" information and we talk to people all over the world.

You can pay skype to get a phone number through them and forward it to your numbers all over the world so you will always be reachable by the same number wherever you are. So those who don't have a skype account can call you without having an account.

We already have numbers, and I don't want to be reached wherever I am

I just had no idea people paid for it!
