Simple Kindle Questions

Looking to get into the Kindle game so started writing my first book. I am doing so currently in Word. I have a few basic questions:

1. What spacing should I use? Double spacing? Any other tips in regards to formatting?

2. Once published, what is the best way to list it? Do I make it a free book at first then charge after that or ? The book is related to love, dating, etc.

That's all. Thanks!

Great suggestion: Employ Diana, she's awesome.

If you're publishing only on Kindle and you join Select you can only make it free for five days per every 90 days. Some people suggest getting reviews before you use your free days, but you can't really control how many reviews you get. You could ask your friends and family to review your book, but Amazon frowns on that and is in a habit of deleting those kinds of reviews.

Word is excellent for the Kindle and it's all you need. I'd go with double spacing throughout. Make sure and turn on the "show/hide paragraph marks" to get perfect, clean formatting.

I suggest you split your five free days into a three day period and a two day period as you gain more traction that way. People will click like mad the first few hours your free book appear. After that it dies down like any promo. Think of how people crowd the game stop store on the release of a new video game on the day it opens. After a few weeks the game is old hat and nobody wants one. A good idea is to create a series. That way you constantly have new material to grab new viewers. All the best to you. Have a happy new year.

Before you do any free days, have your backlist of other books setup. That way people getting your book for free will have something to buy if they like it. Publish a series of related books in the same niche - that's how you will be able to leverage your efforts.

Also, I second having DianaHeuser do the formatting for you - you can pull your hair out doing it yourself.

Everything you need to know about PROPERLY formatting for the Kindle can be found here:

You can use Word if you're willing to accept a less than perfect product. Again Amazon has excellent instructions for that, in the form of a free Kindle book.

And finally, the place to go to answer all your Kindle questions:

Don't use double spacing. Use single spacing and indent your paragraphs. Insert a page break at the end of each chapter. If you have pictures, place them at the end of the page and insert a page break after them.
When uploading you will be given a choice of categories, but you can't 'make' it free. You will see that 99 cents is the least you can charge. $2.99 will give you better royalties.
To make it free you enlist it in kindle select and you can then choose free days to promote your book. But it has to have a price on it to start with.
