How necessary is an email list in online marketing?

If I am promoting affiliate products primarily is it really necessary to build an email list. I don't find the idea of collecting emails and harassing people with offers very attarctive. How much more profitable is it really to collect opt ins than to just send people right to the sales page?

Yes. List building is essential for affiliate marketing.

I don't find the idea of collecting emails and harassing people with offers very attarctive.
If you think it's harassment, affiliate marketing is not for you. My whole online marketing started from someone's email. It wasn't harassing. It changed my life.

How much more profitable is it really to collect opt ins than to just send people right to the sales page?
You send traffic one time to a sales page. If they don't buy, they are lost forever. But if you have them in your list, they buy from you over and over. Besides, sales happen with follow up. Follow up can't happen without capturing your traffic into your list.

OK well don't do it then but understand you're missing out on tons of repeat customers, traffic and sales.

Well instead of having one time customers who you never see again or people who come, consider buying then change their mind and you never see again you can have a list full of people who have bought from you in the past (and probably will again) or people who might buy from you later if you give them a second chance. You need an email list.

Neither do I. So I collect emails, establish credibility and respect as a provider of valued information, and then make occasional recommendations for targeted products (interspersed with other emails) only to people who trust me. I don't harass people with offers at all: I think that's a very "optimistic" way to try to sell anything, and generally the method used by people who are in the industry only temporarily (albeit that there's a very substantial and ever self-replicating "pool" of them, each duplicating faithfully the mistakes of their predecessors).

Incomparably more profitable, from my perspective.

There are a few hundred threads in this forum with titles like "What's The One Thing You'd Do Differently If You Were Starting Again Tomorrow?". Take a look through a small sample of them, and you'll find that one of the things they all have in common is that they're full of replies from long-established, successful Warriors almost all of whom give the same answer: the thing they'd do differently, with what they know now but didn't know when they started, is "start to build a list on day 1". There are reasons for that.

This little thread may help you: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...marketing.html

Without lists, you can't keep traffic returning to your site (and very few people, typically, will buy anything at their first visit). Nor can you effectively make repeated sales to the same customers (which many of us have found is where the bulk of the income is, in internet marketing).

Thanks for your timely responses. Loving the activity on this forum.

Ok, so I am considering using listwire because its free. Should I go ahead with a more reputable system like Aweber or is the free service comparable?

It'll be free for a reason (though I'm not familiar with Listwire) so just go with Aweber, they have a $1 trial for 30 days and by then you'll be happy enough you went for a paid service.

        Yes, definitely.

        GetResponse or Aweber, perhaps?

This is one of the comparatively few things in internet marketing that it really, really pays - in the long run - to "get right the first time you do it". For reasons which can be pretty hard to foresee when you're doing it for the first time, unfortunately. But most of what you need to know about "free autoresponders" is in this post, I hope (including in the links inside it): http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post7189490

        Good luck!

Definitely worth the investment for a paid list building service like AWeber (I use it) or GetResponse (seen many use it) ..will pay you back in spades!

the necessity is purely based on a few factors, do you want to establish a relationship with your readers/purchasers of products or services? do you want the chance to resell further items to them in the future? Do you want to remain in this business for a long time or not?

My reasons for building a list are simple, it helps me to continue to do a job that I love, communicating with people daily and problem solving, I offer new solutions regularly to them sometimes free and sometimes for a fee for which then allows me to continue to do this job by being paid to carry on. I want to remain in this business for many years because I love how I live my life right now, by having a mailing list who trust what I say and what I do and by helping them in their business ventures they remunerate me fairly and regularly again allowing me to be able to continue to do what I do.

    Hope this helps!

If "selling" and "marketing" are bad words to you, then that's a hurdle you need to get across. particularly if you want to be a "marketer".

If you're sick and go to the doctor, and he hands you a prescription for something you need to then go purchase, was he/she being sleazy by doing so? On a similar note - is he/she doing you a favor if they withhold that prescription for a month ("I want to build a relationship first", "I don't want to come across as pushy")..

Granted, that's not the perfect metaphor - but it still does a decent job of making my point I believe. If you have the solution for someones problem, you are not doing them any help by withholding that from them.

it is absolutely essential, it's not harassing people as long as you are sending them cool free stuff often and never just bombarding them with pitches.

Building email list is a major component of a growing marketing team's execution of its goals. It touches almost all marketing and customer services channels of a young business.

Building list is especially attractive because, along with SEO and social media, it's a "free" channel -- in that it costs almost nothing to in the information and then reach out to leads.
Building list will be helpful in these sections -
    1. Media contacts.
    2. Newsletter Recipients
    3. Job Applicants

when you build a list for specifically promoting affiliate products it works like this:

say you want to promote the clickbank product "truth about abs"

you set up a squeeze page and give away a unique free report, video series etc

when you're building a list from your squeeze page you use single opt in and then promote the clickbank product on the next page

this way you are building a list and at the same time you are still able to make money when you build your list

once you get people on your list you set up lots of emails going out over many weeks even months in order to make more sales

if you were to send traffic direct to a clickbank product sales page you would be lucky to get 3% conversions

by building a list you can follow up with people over a longer period and making more sales

    sending traffic direct to a sales page - 1 - 3% conversions

using a list and email marketing - 5 - 30% ad even higher depending how good your email marketing is

i hope this clears things up :-)

I am a salesman, both offline and online. There is no way to make money online without making a sale it might be your product or an affiliate product. But money has to change hands from soneone to another. A list is nothing more then a pool of customers that are interested in what you are selling.

The challenge to listbuilding success is being able to build trust with your list. This is by far the biggest challenge that you will face with your list.
But if you take the time to build a relationship, your customers will come to trust your recommendations. Thus you will make more sales. Just remember not every email you send should be to make a sale.

You want to build rapport with free products or information (I have a simple software program that I give to my Weight Loss subs.) Send out articles on breaking info. Just like any business sometimes you are just keeping your brand out there.

Building trust is the hardest part even established marketers.

You just can't have the attitude that you are bothering them, they subscribed to your list because you have information that they want. If you are truly solving their problem thay will want to hear from you.

Looking through some of the other posts on your thread you have been given GREAT advice from some of the best in the business.

    Good Luck.

A list is on demand traffic. We all love the money, but as stated many time over. If you delay the gratification for a while and build a solid relationship with your list you are golden. I help you and give you awesome free content. You respond by paying me when you would like a product that I recommend. Most people miss the point.
I have a couple lists one for affiliate marketing where I send 3 to 4 offers a week and they know it is coming. That keeps regular money coming in and then I funnel them in over the course of 3 or 4 weeks to my long term relationship list. My products, my services and a boat load of info to help out.

Not having a list is silly. IMO.
If you don't want to be a offer sending freak then don't be. Your list your choice : )

Building a list of people is crucial for any business.

    Look at it this way:

    1) You own a Restaurant, Coffee Shop, etc.
    2) What will keep your business going?

Exactly. People with money to spend on your business... Now, ideally a Restaurant will only market to their current Local area. So it is recommended that these Local businesses build as much rapport with these local people to keep them coming back and spending more money on their business so they could keep going.

The same thing applies in Internet Marketing...

    1) You own an online business: Weight Loss, Make Money niche, etc.
    2) What will keep you going?

That's right. You guessed it... people with money to spend on your business.

Now imagine if you could collect their contact information so you can share with them more value, tips and tricks that will help solve their problems. And when you find a product that will be good use for them, you simply recommend them the product, and make some money in the long run.

Just make sure you treat these people like human beings, and not like a bank machine. And you'll have potential people with money that will spend on your online business for years to come... and if you to decide to make your own product, those are the same people that are going to spend on your business.

    God bless,
    Luis Gabriel

It is always advisable and recommended to build a list...this can be your customer list.
However you need to separate it by product category. Let say you are promoting travel and you are giving free info about travel and you have the opt it. This is subscriber list opt in is because they are interested about travel and they have landed on your site. You can continue promote related travel products to the same list and if you offer other than travel products to the same list, the risk of unsubscribe from your list is high..so please take into consideration. Alternatively, you can buy email list to do your marketing, you don't have to own the list and buy the list instead.
Hope this help. Cheers! Happy New Year.
