My first site started in 2012, $260/mo...

I've been a long time reader of this forum, and I've always enjoyed reading "success" stories and dreaming that one day I could share the same success. In 2012, I've finally taken action and created my own site. Sure, it's not making me enough money to quit my job, but it's a start. And I honestly enjoy it. I thought I'd share some of my stats for all those new internet marketers wondering how to make money online. This is not to brag or anything like that. It's just an honest report from someone who was once looking at all this questioning whether or not it was possible to do it. It is possible, even if you start out small like me. Each month gets better and better. Just keep working hard and you'll gain traction. Just know that it is real, and it's possible. You will grow traffic by creating something valuable that people really want.

I created an Authority Site

My site is a tutorial site where I teach people how to use a 3D modeling program. I create all the tutorials myself by taking screen shots of the software as I'm creating something, and writing the instructions as I go along. A major part of what I do is YouTube videos. I'll create a screencast of me creating something while narrating it to teach people how to do something.

I spent about 2 months building the site and creating some content before officially launching the site in March, 2012. It's been a lot of work. I spend 2-3 days a week after work creating new content for the site. Most other days I'm doing research or networking with people on social platforms. Each post takes about 3-4 hours to write, since I have to plan the tutorial and create many images. If it's a video, it takes 5-6 hours to complete.

I used some of Pat Flynn's backlinking strategy for some minor SEO back linking, but sort of quit doing that once all the panda, penguin and EMD updates began to change things. I really don't do any backlinking anymore. After each post, I'll post it on all my social profiles (Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn), and sometimes Reddit. I have social profiles set up specifically for the website brand.

Monetization

Currently, I am only monetizing the site using Adsense. I also sell direct advertisements to different vendors directly using a OIO Publisher (Wordpress Plugin). Each month, my Adsense earnings increase. Right now, I'm at $180 for this month. I'll usually sell one banner ad per month directly for $80/30 days. So that puts me at about $260 per month of income right now.

It took a long time to get there though. I didn't even reach my first $100 threshold until October. But then in November I made $125, and this month I'm at $180. So once things started to move, it kept growing.

Some stats as of December:
9,000 visits/mo
18,800 pageviews/mo
3:00 minute average visit duration
70% new visitors

37% Search Traffic
40% Referral Traffic
23% Direct Traffic

In my experience, YouTube videos with Adsense enabled have a much higher CTR than Adsense on a website. The all-time report for my adsense says 90% of the clicks I get come from YouTube, with only 10% coming from my site. The CTR shares a similar percentage.

My YouTube channel has 1,261 subscribers, and 58,780 views.

I also have a mailing list with about 230 subscribers on it. I don't have an autoresponder set up yet, and I'm surely not taking advantage of that list at all. I'll send a random email like once a month. It's something I plan to work on.

Plans for 2013
Anyways, just wanted to share this snapshot for everyone. No, I'm not making thousands of dollars a day or whatever, but I'm doing something I enjoy, and I'm really helping people. I get emails all the time from people thanking me for everything I've done. It means the world to me to get emails like that.

Now that I've built a brand around the site, I am going to be taking things to the next level in 2013. There is a lot more potential for me to make money beyond just selling advertisements. Like creating my own training products, affiliate sales for software plugins, books, etc.

I also plan on creating a few more sites in different niches that don't require so much time from myself to maintain. If I didn't enjoy 3D modeling so much, that would probably be a big complaint of mine. Definitely consider this when deciding to start a personally branded authority site. It will always require your time to keep it up. That's why you hear all these people saying "follow your passion." lol.

Any other new internet marketers want to share some of their stats from 2012?

Happy New Year, and good luck to all new internet marketers!

Anomalous, thanks for the advice. I have been so focused on building my brand and content that I really haven't taken a step back to look at other easy ways to convert my existing traffic into income. I've tried with some Barnes & Noble book affiliate links related to the software I teach, with zero conversions.

Any suggestions on some CPA or affiliate programs I should try? I totally agree with you that Adsense isn't the most rewarding way to convert targeted traffic.

        Good job spider.

I'm fairly new to affiliate marketing mylsef and unfortuantely lazed off the first few months, but the last couple of months has been all work. I know you're earning very little for now, but its step by step stories like this that move me.

Your nieche looks like a good niche to do e-mail marketing.

        All the best!

Replace AdSense with anything you can as quckly as you can or risk waking up one day with nothing, banned for life, for no reason you will ever discover or figure out. Google is NOT to be trusted, and never, ever, ever put all your eggs in one arbitrary, fickle, totalitarian outfit like Google AdSense.

Jut wanted to comment again, and I have to say that he is really, really wrong!

Google is scary, and they have banned accounts, but they have their reasons!

Many people make mistakes on where and when they place their adds, and you have to understand that you are replaceable by google.

If you read their TOS and the tips given on the forum, you should be OK!

That being said, you shouldn't keep all your eggs in one basket.
Lost building and affiliate offers are other places you should master.

I totally agree that a site is not an authority site just because that's what I called it. You're right, it is considered an authority site only when the community see's it as that. But I'm sure you know people generalize the terms and when you have to call it either a niche site or an authority site, it's definitely an authority site.

Also, regarding Google Adsense, I'm really not concerned at all. I have no risk by using Adsense. IF they ban my account (which I have no reason to believe they will), I can just monetize my traffic some other way. The value is in the traffic stream I have created, not the monetization method.

    Wow!!!!!!!!!
    That sound GREAT!!!!
I also have a website that has tutorials from YouTube but they aren't my own tutorials.
I started my blog in August 2012 and I post a tutorial everyday. I have a FB page for my website and I already have 12,860 likes (who counts?! )
Last month I started putting Google Adsense on my website. I earned about $5 from the ads! and this month I put 3 google ads on it and now this month I made about $22 from that website!
I know that it's not much....but one day I will reach the $100 per month!!!! Hopefully it will be this year!!!!
Good Luck with the new year!!!!
    Happy New Years!!!!!!!

Congratulations on your achievements last year! Your stats is encouraging and there is obviously a lot more you can achieve with that site this year.

Yes, adsense is not a monetization method you can depend on. Not because of the fear of being banned though. Heck! guys like Adsenseflippers are still in business despite the so called incessant bans. So I agree with you, Google have their reasons, but that, my friend, doesn't mean you should put all your eggs in one basket. While you can still leave a few Google ads on your site, explore every other promising means of squeezing as much cash as possible out of it. Your traffic stats is still on the increase; experiment with other monitization methods and find the winners. Think of CPA and product promotions.

It is also time to get serious with that list. Add more targeted subscribers to your list and build a warm relationship with them. People already email to think you for what you are helping them learn, and that is a good sign. You can promote other people's product to them or create a high ticket product/course and offer it in a webinar in partnership with another expert in your niche.

You love what you do, and that's the motivation we all need, once you get that list to a size, feel free to think outside the box.

      Good Luck!

Glad to see your planning on marketing to your list. Please do not delay on this. Keep your list updated more than once a month. You don't have to abuse them but they will surely appreciate good tips or information in your niche. Otherwise they wouldn't have subscribed.

Start adding affiliate promotions asap. You'll generate more money with the right offers.

If possible, look for offers with recurring commissions. Many cloud software companies offer recurring commissions. This is you receiving a % every month a referral uses the software. Sounds like you could sell the 3D modelling program and complementary software.

Any potential for a membership site? I can't speak from experience, but I know some warriors do very well with membership sites.

Can you create complementary software to the 3D modelling software?

Create a user guide and sell it.

You have good and targeted traffic. It's time to earn.

You have a pretty good following. Keep that going and start doing affiliate promoting in your articles as well. It will add more income and it will just be part of your article instead of taking a chunk of your site.

Once you have a pretty good following you should start a membership area for your audience. $4.99 a month for a weekly extra guide can go along way! Get that up to 200-500 members and you are replacing your job and making IM full time!

Thanks for all of your encouragement!

There's so much potential right in front of me, I just need to go ahead and do it already. I've got a ton of ideas for affiliates, there's a whole market of third party software that integrates with the softare I write tutorials for. So I definitely plan on trying to promote some of them. It's just hard to decide which one I should promote, because my brand is really a personal brand, its got my name and face and reputation and I really want to recommend the best products to my followers, so I don't take this lightly. 2013 is going to be the year though.

I am a member of MaxBounty, I'm not that impressed with the offers they have. The only one I saw that could potentially fit my audience is Efax. Most of the offers on there seem so spammy/scammy. I just started running it so I can't comment on its effectiveness. I'm selling Banner ads as well, but I'm not to the point where people buy ads on a regular basis, I have to chase them down and promote and network with people. I'd really like to get into BuySellAds but they keep declining me.

I've thought about a membership site, that's definitely a possibility. I'm starting to get people emailing me asking if I do one on one training. I really don't want to get into that but maybe I could do a monthly membership private forum with monthly webinars or something.

I've got a couple other projects I'm starting in different niches so I'm using the income from this site to help with outsourcing and funding the other projects. They are more "build it once, let it ride" type of sites. I'm really trying to build a business, not just one site.

Another thing you could do is ask them what they want to learn. If someone is willing to pay for online training, they would probably be willing to buy a product on that as well. Having a suite of products would definitely be a good way to monetize your site. Especially because you already have some authority.

I would suspend your projects in other niches indefinitely. You have such a great start and plenty of untapped potential in your main site. Unless you can afford to start outsourcing you would do so much better to concentrate on one thing. If you get sidetracked you will potentially dilute your efforts to successfully get your current site to the next level.

Good job by the way and take my comments with a grain of salt. Everyone has different circumstances, skills, stamina, finances, and so on. You are the only one that can make the best decisions for your business and it looks like you have been doing that very well so far.

      ^^This^^

I started three years ago, made about $100/month the first year, $300/month the second, and over $1000/month the third (2012). So you're ahead of my curve, anyway! Nice work.

To get back to the quoted bit above, I've put some effort into other sites, getting outside my core competence (fitness), and it hasn't worked very well (to put it mildly). I got lucky with my first online project, which turned out, much as yours has, to be a winner. If I had to do it again, I'd probably stick with that exclusively until I had tested and monetized it to its fullest. Then I'd try something else.

As for monetizing your site, I'd go with creating my own product over other stuff. You've already got a good customer base that clearly likes what you're doing. My idea: keep making the free videos, but have an add-on (some extra technique or advanced feature or something - I know nothing about 3D modeling) that only paying customers can access. Then charge $9.97/month to get into the Premier Program. Or, just make a bunch of "premier" videos and sell them in a batch for a higher one-time price. Lots of different ways you can go.

I think you're right. I've got to admit, for some reason I am really stupid in this respect. I spend sooooo much time and effort creating my free content and videos, but when it comes time to monetize, I just go for the quickest and easiest thing. Adsense..... Banner Ads.

If I really sat down and created a solid plan for a membership site, with some top notch features, I know I would be successful. Heck, I know two of my biggest competitors are doing just that! One charges $30 a month and has a monthly Q&A webinar for the members. The other charges $50/year and offers private forum help and some downloads for the program. I think I could charge somewhere in the middle of this. Why the heck am I not doing this already?

I think my biggest problem is that I get overwhelmed at the thought of tackling such a big project. A blog post or video is easy. I can visualize the whole project at once, execute it and post it in a matter of hours. I feel GREAT when I publish new content. I think the idea of creating a complete training product from A to Z or a membership site is intimidating.

But maybe if I can break it down into smaller pieces and put it on my calendar it will help me get it done. Thanks for your advice!!!!

Thank you for the sound advise! I certainly see the dangers of having multiple projects cooking. The potential for creating zero progress by spreading myself too thin is a real threat (especially with a full time job/wife/life/friends), and I really need to buckle down and focus on one thing at a time.

I guess the reason why I want to create some other projects, is although I feel like my 3D modeling site is succeeding, it is 100% reliant upon me continuing to produce content for the site. It's the age old debate over whether or not blogging can be considered "Passive Income". The growth of my blog will not continue unless I keep spending time creating new content and networking with other people.

Some of my projects include building systems that are easily scalable, or can be replicated easily (geographical based sites that I can copy for other targeted locations). I have been using the income from my main site to hire help on Odesk for my side projects, so that's been a great experience. None of these projects are really "off the ground yet", because I have been making sure to focus at least 80% of my attention to my main site.

My long term goal is to have websites and systems that are 100% autopilot. I can just come in and correct the course a little bit, or tweak some traffic generation techniques, or think of new ideas and systems to create. I really do enjoy creating content for my 3D modeling site and helping people out, so I'm fine with doing that on my main site, but my future sites I really don't want to be a major component of the daily maintenance and growth of them.

So I think as long as I keep that ratio of 80/20 attention between new projects, and my existing site, along with taking advantage of outsourcing for the new projects, I should be on a good course. Do you think that's a good plan?

    Congrats, OP!

The stats you shared show a fairly high level of engagement which is awesome. You've been given some decent advice for monetization and marketing tricks which is great, but don't let that get in the way of delivering value to your market. Your visitors care because you're truly serving them...continue to do that and you'll continue to grow! (Especially with a 70% new visitor rate...nice!)

If you're going to own it...own it. Make sure you're injecting yourself into the site, adding your personality/spin, etc. Build a connection with your visitors and continue to drive them down the value chain from casual reader > regular reader > fan etc.

You have a decent sized email list and a good amount of visitors...start asking them what they'd like to see on the site. What would they pay for? What do they need/want?

You might want to join a mastermind group that has experience with these types of sites. That's what prompted Pat Flynn to create the training source and pushed his earnings through the roof on his Green Exam Academy site. We interviewed Pat for our podcast recently...very relevant for you, I think.

    Best of luck in 2013!!

Your advice has been incorporated into most of my strategies on my site. I think the biggest thing it has done for me though is help me BELIEVE that this stuff is real and it really does work. For me, I've struggled with finding support from people in my life because they just don't "get it." To be able to tap into your podcast every couple weeks makes me feel like you've got my back.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post! Naturally, I have already listened to your Pat Flynn interview, it was really awesome, thanks! I'm a huge fan of Pat Flynn's Smart Passive Income blog/podcast too. I think I will send out an email to my list and just ask them straight up what they are looking for. My email list has grown since my original post. I'm up to 604 subscribers now. I'm also noticing the amount of emails I get have increased to about 2-3 per day, so I'm sure I'll get some great responses from my subscribers.

Thank you for the great advice as usual! Any tips on finding experienced Mastermind groups?

      -Matt

Wow...thanks for the kind words! It's Justin here, actually...I do most of the outreach and content for us...along with goofing around on the WF. :-)

It's great to hear you've grown your email list so quickly in the last month or so (wow!) and I think asking them will be a good bet for you and allow you to serve them even better!

We actually just got back from a mastermind in Cebu last week. We're holding it once every two months rather than weekly, as most of us have somewhat established businesses and it gives us more time to implement changes. Chris Ducker wrote about it here and talked about how to organize your first mastermind...pretty useful stuff. I'll be on his podcast in a few weeks discussing the value of masterminds.

The best way to FIND a mastermind is to just network with more people. If you're having more conversations and building more connections, you're more likely to find all kinds of interesting opportunities drop in your lap. If after that you're still not able to find the type of mastermind you'd like to join...you should create your own! You should have enough like-minded people at that point to put together an interesting group.

Monetizing website is again an art, it can be only learn by trying different things and making it happen. If you stuck on one thing, you are leaving lot of money on the table.
With this excellent stats, you need to be always in action to try different monetizing methods like CPA, ClickBank, Amazon or any JV with a good product owner.

Congrats, thats great. Seems like there are so many avenues to go to monetize sites by creating mailing lists, selling ad space etc..

But I think the best thing is doing something you enjoy doing, teaching people how to do it, and the fact you can monetize that is priceless.

Great job and scale it up for sure.

Just by taking action, you've already succeeded.

$260 might not be a big amount, but it's still money that you've earned. I'm sure you'll earn more because I think you're a hard worker.

    Congrats!

Mary, thanks for sharing that website. That's a pretty interesting idea. Perhaps I could create a series of premium tutorials that people could pay for. Right now I'm working on an "online course" that I'll planning on selling for the $40-60 range.

I've been losing motivation though. It's so much work! I gotta keep pushing though.

By the way, I just looked at my original post, I'm doing even better almost a year later.

    As of September 2013:
    25,620 visits/mo
    44,582 Pageviews
    77% new visitors

    ~1,400 email subscribers
~6,500 YouTube subscribers with 238,000 video views

making about $400/mo. (I really need to improve this. I know I'm not monetizing efficiently.)

My site has been pretty stagnant since June, meaning I haven't been adding a lot of content to it. (Woo hoo passive income) I've just had a few personal things come up, and my day job has been getting pretty intense and stressful. I really want to ramp things back up though. I've got such great potential here. Could use a push!! Thanks guys!

I'm similar to you, although I only hit around $150 every single month. I haven't had any time to add to my site.

I hope to focus once again towards the end of October...can't wait!

With the amount of visitors to your site, I think you can improve your income. I guess you just need time to start working on it

      To your success

you could always sell for a very nice chunk of change. $15k at minimum, more than likely way more however, that is MINIMUM.

Great stats you have there! I am pretty sure that you may have worked hard and smart for your own authority site. Just remember, Google loves authority websites and it will bring you more benefits in the end. For this year, I hope you will be getting even better than ever. To your success!

    Great work.

This is what puts people off - the work involved. If you just get down to it and turn off all your other distractions then you can be successful.

Patience, determination, hard work. Well done.

Awesome post! I recently sold my first site that I built and will be charging 24.99 a month maintenance fee. Does anyone know how or where I can figure to post a link for them to mske payments online that come directly to me so I don't have to go by there to collect? Thanks a lot
