Articles on internet mostly in 2nd person?

I've always found that an article written in the third person usually has the most authoritative voice. The thing I increasingly find on the internet is that most articles are written in the second person. A lot also seem to slip between second and third within the same article. I think this is the case with a lot of the articles I've bought from writers here on the WF too (not a complaint, just an observation).

I know there's is a lot of well established and successful writers here on the forum, and was just wondering when you write an article for someone, do you automatically write it in second person? Is this what's expected nowadays from a client? Do you have a preference depending on the client maybe? Or where it's going to be published?

I know most people in general (as oppose to say a magazine editor) when ordering articles would never specify, or possibly not notice the difference anyway, so just curious to how, as writers, you deal with that.

Writing in the second person probably came from copywriting. The second person, using "you," makes the writing more personal. That's why it has always been used in copy going back many decades.

I always write in the second person out of habit.

I've never had a client specify point of view other than to say something like the audience is professional so make it formal.

It depends. When I was freelancing a lot of my clients wanted their stuff in first person, which makes the piece more authoritative and tends to set them up as experts. I prefer to write in first person.

I've gone back and forth between second and third and have never had a problem with it. Basically I do what makes the most sense in a given situation. i.e. right now first person makes the most sense. That's just me anyways.

    Interesting replies. Thanks.

Ken -- I had a feeling it might have originated from copywriting. Second person can have that 'Salesy" feel to it.

TravelingGuy -- I could imagine if you'd built up a name for yourself (or trying to) within a certain niche, then first person would really make sense there.

Rob -- Do you use first person for your clients, or for personal work most, or both?

Most of the articles on our site are written in 2nd person.

Maybe it's because we are trying to inform our readers with information to help them all the while maintaining an authoritative tone.

Most of the articles have the purpose of directly advising and educating the readers, as if talking straight to the readers, thus use 2nd person for a more advisory tone.

It's not wrong to use 1st or 3rd either, but it won't be as effective in making the readers feel that you care for them. 3rd person articles often have the sole purpose of informing the readers only, as if the writer doesn't care what you do after reading his work. 1st person is normally used in newsletters, especially when you are trying to get personal with your subscribers.

It will depend on your article's main purpose. Most writers on the Internet aim to influence their readers in some ways (hence how the term "marketing" is often associated together as well), thus explains the massive use of 2nd person.

Very interesting thread and discussion, thanks for that Freemeal.

And I agree with Evilsaigon... we are all the time looking to connect and engage the audience - for which second person helps add a personal touch.
