buying dot info domain name

Hi,
Whenever I go to buy some domain name after selecting the right keywords, I find to my chagrin that the dot com domain name is already taken and the only available thing is the dot info domain, which, needless to say, is also way cheaper. Now the question is: some people are of the opinion is that dot info should be avoided because it is often seen by Google as a spam site and hence it never gets the number one rank. Do you subscribe to this view as well? Or do you think there is no harm buying a dot info domain and trying to rank it?

    Hi Kajol,

Yes, it's very frustrating to find the .com has gone. Oftentimes you'll type that URL into your browser and find it's not even being used, but merely 'parked', because someone has bought it hoping to sell it for a higher price.

The other two TLDs are .org and .net It's best to use only these three for the reason you mentioned.

It takes a bit of ingenuity to create a domain name whilst incorporating the key word phrase you want, but here's a handy tip ...

Go to NameCheap and you can check out up to 50 variations of your domain name in one go. And - if you will accept .org or .net too - that can be up to 150 variations at one go.

    Warmest regards,

    Paul

I don't think .info's take a penalty as far as search engine rankings go. They discriminate based on content and backlinks, not your choice of TLD. However, I would not get .info's simply because they are not as trustworthy in visitors' (potential buyers') eyes. Think about 2 sites of the same domain name, one .com and one .info. Which one would you trust more? Most people will say .com. Even .net and .org in most cases are seen as having lower authority as .com.

      Kajol,

I don't know much about .info domain extensions, but I have heard they are frowned upon by google. Skip that extension, try to get a .com. Try using hyphens, dots, or add a little extra to the domain name to get those keywords in there! Do some searching and look at other domain names that aren't exact. They still rank in the top 10, and a lot of the times #1. Sometimes, the best way to learn is looking at other sites.

Like many other people, you were misinformed, Jacob.

You shouldn't believe everything you hear.

Yes, there are people who still believe this.

    It's completely wrong.

I myself have .info domain-names which have the number 1 rank for keywords of low-to-medium and medium competition. So do many others here. There are even threads containing lists of them (though not my own), which people can verify for themselves.

Google goes to great lengths to clarify (in writing, on blogs, on other websites, on videos, etc. etc.) that among the top-level international domains, domain extension is not relevant to any SEO/ranking criteria, in any way, but there are still some people around who have themselves had difficulty ranking a ".info" and mistakenly assume from that, that Google must have been lying about it for all these years. It's just ill-informed nonsense.

Some of the threads listed below contain links to authoritative Google-owned sources clarifying all this.

There are plenty of other reasons why you don't see so many ".info" domains ranking in #1 position (including the fact that not so many people use them, and not so many people try to rank them anyway), but "worse ranking ability" isn't one of them.

However, there may be other, non-SEO-related reasons for some people deciding not to use ".info" domain-names for their business. Personally I use them, I rank them, and I like them (and so do my visitors, subscribers and customers, and they say so openly), but I do own the ".com" versions as well. And I admit I'd be very reluctant to build any sort of business on a domain-name of the which the ".com" variant already belonged to someone else.

The following threads are just a small selection of those that have recently clarified this sometimes misunderstood subject.

I personally think .info domains are unprofessional and don't do much to build credibility in the eyes of your viewers.

I used to think that, as well. How wrong I was!

My subscribers and customers say exactly the opposite, whenever I ask them (which I do periodically, and used to even when I was using only ".com" domains, and they said the same then).

Across a wide range of unrelated niches, they prefer ".info", out of all the domain-extensions I mention to them as "available"/"possible". (The ones they dislike seem to be ".biz" most of all, followed by ".com").

They think ".info" speaks of an "informational site", and that that conveys authority and objectivity.

They think ".com" sounds like "just another marketer trying to sell stuff to us".

It's really very instructive asking customers what they think. I learned a lot from it. If you have the right sort of relationships with them, a surprisingly high proportion of them is willing to offer an opinion.

Internet marketers tend to like ".com domains" and dislike "info" ones. Our customers very widely feel the opposite. This is why I now usually register both, and simply redirect the ".com" I'm not using to the "info" I am using.

Alexa you just dropped another gold nugget. I just picked it up, lol. What do you think for a cpa website... Say Project Payday. Should I use a .info in this niche or do you think .com is better?

I'm gonna test it. Thanks Alexa for the detailed post. Sometimes trends translate over into different niches and business models. I just always assumed .infos looked cheap of unfamiliar but the response from your list does make a lot of sense. The internet is a huge source of .info and when I think about it I actually trust a .info more. I don't know why I do, lol.

    how about.. freeonlinedatingsites.info
    Any potential?

Since its primarily focused on free dating sites.. it can get away with being .info instead of .com, .net or .org..
Also it can be informational more than sales based.. in that it reviews said free dating sites and provides information on online dating in general.

    Thanks

This monopoly is basically created by some domain name providers, which already booked some good domains with dot com, and when a real customer search for a specific domain, You will end up with Answer "Not available". Later on, They sell those domain names at quite high prices.

Those are the words that should end the discussion and send you back to the drawing-board.

It makes no sense at all to try to build a business on a domain-name of which the .com variation already belongs to someone else. That's all downside, and no advantages at all. Yours doesn't look good. You lose traffic. You lose customers. You have almost no resale value, by comparison. All disadvantages. There are no advantages at all. How much clearer does it need to be?

It really is as simple as that.

If you're trying to start and build up and derive income from a business, and the .com already belongs to someone else, then you need a different domain-name.

Those are people who have no idea what they're talking about at all and have misunderstood the whole subject and believed all the myths of the Urban Myth School of Internet Marketing, and just got it all wrong. But that doesn't matter. It isn't the point.

I run several businesses on .info domain-names (for a few reasons I'm not even going to go into, in this post) but I also own the .com myself, and that's the point.

There's absolutely no harm in it at all, as long as you also own the .com yourself (and re-direct it there, of course).

But don't do it "because someone else already owns the .com" - that makes no sense at all!

.info domains are good if you plan on monetizing through seo. if you are looking to brand the name of the domain, that gets tricky because people will type in .com rather than .info.

i've been in the seo business for over 15 years and i have never had a problem with buying .info when the majority of traffic is coming from my seo efforts and clickable links.

If you want to do business by using the site, you should choose the .com. I know the .com domain expense is high than the .info. Hence that you should choose the .com for any business purpose. Best of luck.

.INFO is Intuitive - The Internet is about information. An "info" address is ideal to communicate information to people who are looking for it. Research indicates that people are attracted to domain names they can readily understand (and remember).INFO is readily understood in multiple languages, giving these addresses universality unavailable in any other domain. Over 437,000,000 pages of .INFO content stored in Google. .INFO names are perfect for search engine submittal .INFO growing in Asia. #4 largest "generic" Top-Level Domain on the Internet (after com, net, org). There are 70 million more names available in .INFO than in .com.

I should say .Info is really good if you d oeverything right with your SEO. Good Luck
