I know of a couple tools out there that will dig up expired domains for you. If I were to go and get them myself, what is the actual process of finding/searching/buying an expired or expiring domain?

Here is a detailed explanation of the process from the buyer's perspective:

A great place to narrow down some good expired/expiring domains is on Domain Tools

Dropping Names | Find Expired Domain Names | DomainTools

Like for instance if I were to go and try to look up a few niche domains I would go to the search bar on the right. I personally only look for .com, but you can pick what you wish. For string I enter "business opportunity" as that targets my audience. Then bam!

This is what I could buy up in the near future if I wanted to. Great keyword driven URLs.

      Auction Screening Results

      MarketingBusinessOpportunity.com
      BestMoneyMakingBusinessOpportunity.com
      PowerupOnlineBusinessOpportunity.com
      OnlineMarketingBusinessOpportunitys.com
      SeoBusinessOpportunity.com

not bad at all really. I hope this helps.

If you have the time, you can troll through old directories like DMOZ looking for old and forgotten sites that have expired. Not all old domain names are listed in the most common domain name search engines.

Pick a high turnover industry like mining or restaurants and keep clicking on the list of domains until you get a not found error, see if it is available to buy, and then check out the link profile.

This guy tells no lie - there is a whole world of expired domains outside of those that any search engine can turn up.

You've just got to know where to look

GoDaddy auctions not only has just auctions. They also put domains up for sale that were not renewed before they drop them. I have snatched many awesome domain names through them before they were dropped.

expired domains are useful only if

1- they have good number of valueable backlinks which are giving traffic
    2- they suit your industry
3- google pagerank is 0 after expiry, and google automatically discounts old links to rank after expiry
4- if it is expired, then there is a very good reason why someone does not even consider it worth 7$ to renew.
in domain industry, its very easy to mistake bad domains for good domains. domains rarely get you $, good content does that.
    Think about it.

I second this, it is a very powerful tool. I've used it plenty of times, even for ideas for new websites! It lists the pagerank, backlinks, age of domain, expiration date and many other statistics vital to you. Good luck op!

      Hi,

There's a few different services I personally use to locate expired domains:

Expired Domains with PR, Backlinks and more completely FREE
      http://moonsy.com/expired_domains/

Both the above are good if you have hours to stroll through the listings and have a keen eye for what makes a good expired domain, there's allot of highly spammed ones on expireddomains.net which is a deterrent for some people.

For that reason Top Quality Domain Authority | Page Authority Expired Domains for PBN is my website of choice to purchase expired domains, the owners are really accommodating and can find niche relevant sites upon request or you can purchase direct from their existing list. O.K they do charge but it saves me allot of time locating such domains and i know from experience that they provide purely quality sites.

Alternatively Search for Domains with Pagerank at Registercompass which is a subscription service for locating domains or sofatware alike prpowershot are quite good, but once again if you have the time and the eye to look at the finer details to ensure the sites aren't penalized or spammed by a previous SEO.

      Hope that helps!

I would go to YouTube, search for videos in your niche, and then take a look at those who get a ton of traffic.

Then click on their links that they provided and see if it is still LIVE and registered.

I have done this ONCE and the website that expired gets me maybe 30-60 clicks per month. I guess I thought that it will do better but it hasn't.
