Problems getting a refund?

Guys,

How long does a Paypal refund take? As long as it takes to log in to your Paypal and send the payment off, right?

It does not take 7 days.... IF I actually get any refund at all.

Take this as an important lesson, if you consider yourself new to IM.

Always go through your yearly subscriptions in your Paypal and CANCEL what you don't want.

Otherwise, if you're dealing with an IMer who keeps on ignoring you and has a history of being evasive...you're in for a VERY TORRID time trying to get your money back once you have been BILLED.

It's been days now, and I still have not been refunded.

Why am I worried? I have virtually zero communication from him even though he is fully aware of my situation. And he is a member of this forum and actually quite "high profile."

But his responsiveness and customer service etiquette is probably the worse I have ever encountered.

So if you have ever encountered such types, I sympathize with you. Good luck in trying to get your refund back...

For me personally, if an IMer is highly unresponsive and evasive, I would NEVER buy anything from him.... not now, or ever.

This is just one of the major pitfalls of internet marketing, unfortunately.

Have you gotten a response from this person? If not, how do you know he is aware of the situation? It was your job to cancel the charge before it occurred, not his job to guess that you no longer wanted what you signed up for.

The lesson should be to take responsibility for yourself. If I don't cancel something, that's my fault, not the seller's.

So, you signed up for a yearly service and it came time for another payment and you had not canceled?

Seriously, I wouldn't be bad mouthing the guy. If I wanted my money back, I'd wait until he was ready to give it to me as he has every right to tell you to pound sand.

Don't let your emotions get the better of you and try to explain your situation and hope he is nice enough to understand that you forgot to cancel and agrees to give you your money back.

Before anyone slags me, let me elaborate a little more:

I asked for a refund within HOURS of being billed. I admit it is my bad for not canceling earlier.

But not only do I not get any refund to date, I get zero response from the marketer.

The only "response" I get is from his helpdesk who curtly tells me I have to wait a long time....And this is despite I making it very clear about my financial situation, and how I needed those funds.

We are talking about customer relations and customer service here, you know.

Not the "aha, you forgot, you made a mistake, now I make you walk the plank" type of attitude.

You know sometimes even a simple email can go a long way to explain that you used the money to pay your mortgage payment...or something. A simple apology or something...

I know of many marketers who do that, and they win out long term...simply because they have much better communication.

It really sucks.... and I'm willing to bet that there are many who have had such unhappy experiences before?

Just the top of my head, I can state that Aaron Wall, Jeff Mulligan, James Brown, Chris Carpenter, and many others (too many to remember) whom I have had dealings with (either bought something or emailed them) have ALL responded promptly, and in-person to me.

The few times I asked for refunds, have been promptly granted as well.

There is no toiling, pushing, or prayers just to get a response, let alone a refund....in my experience so far.

Here's a hint, I've spent a considerable amount of money online, mostly buying stuff related to IM over the past several years, but the one phobia I have is, marketers who evade the customer for whatever reason.

If you can't refund me at the moment (even though I notified you within hours)....can you at least talk to me, and not give me the runaround?

Do I have a point here?

If this member is "high profile" as you mention and you've only gotten a response from his helpdesk, then you need to be a little more patient.

I'm sure that he probably gets hundreds of responses per day it will take a few more days to get to yours.

I understand that he shouldn't keep you waiting like that either and you're right that he should communicate with you at least.

But with that being said, give him a few more days and if after a whole week has gone by and you haven't heard anything, then take it to the next step.

You mentioned it was a Paypal subscription, right?

Then simply get PayPal involved. All you do is go to the "Resolution Center" and open a complaint. If the seller doesn't communicate with you to resolve the issue, you can upgrade the complaint to a full dispute, which is when Paypal gets involved and they may even reverse the transaction for you.

Let me know how this goes.

    Sincerely,

    Jaime

I've opened a dispute in Paypal after trying to be nice/reasonable/emailing their support so many times, and spending some sleepless nights over it.

      It's definitely stressful....

Cos it's not an amount that anyone of you would call small....and definitely not for me either. I also needed to pay some bills, and I wanted to cancel last month but the thought slipped out of my mind.

Had I canceled. none of this would have happened. But still, if you're in any way a decent marketer (yes, he is quite well known), can't you resolve it with me promptly? Feels like my money has dropped into a lions den already...all it took was a few mouse clicks in Paypal...

It's not like everyday he gets an (urgent) refund request.

If I don't get a refund, I'll let you guys know.

From my experience with PAYPAL, you will get a refund if you do not received the product. For other reasons it will be subjected to the agreement from the seller.

For informational products, PAYPAL will not refund the payment unless the seller agree to it. I have tried a few times and never get a refund but PAYPAL will take note of the number of complaints and if the ratio is extremely high they will just closed the seller account.

I've heard that Paypal is actually less lenient with non physical products sellers, due to so many abuse cases....

Which is why many IMers selling digital products have the brains to not to wing their luck, and will refund promptly...correct me if I'm wrong.

I now have to draw funds from my credit card to pay my upcoming hosting bills next week, and thus incur higher fees, due to having nearly all my existing Paypal funds swiped out from under me (by that billing)!

That IMer in question is definitely not going to reimburse me for the extra charges, and by dragging the refund (supposedly one week), and being incommunicado....I think I've had it up to here....

Draw your own conclusions from this.

You have my sympathy - this is a horrible situation for anyone to be in. As soon as you get the refund - apply it to your credit card to keep the associated interest fees to a minimum.

However, you make it sound like this marketer "stole" your money and now refuses to return it and is also refusing to communicate with you.

If you've heard from his help desk - he has communicated with you. Many people that work online have multiple businesses running and simply can't handle all the communications personally - so they set up help desks in order to provide customer services. What good is a help desk if you then need to respond personnally?

If the help desk has told you that the refund will take up to a week - well, that makes your situation difficult - but it may be necessary. It may take that long for them to verify your payment. I doubt they stop everything they're doing to process a refund request.

Your situation does not constitute an emergency to them. That sounds harsh - I'm sorry. But if your financial situation is that dire you should have canceled the subscription in time to avoid this. You said you thought of it last month but it slipped your mind. If it wasn't so important to you then to take care of it right away - why should it be so important to them now?

A help desk must handle many customer questions and problems - why should they feel that your request is more important than everyone else's?

I really am sorry that you are in this situation. But you are responsible, not the marketer. You created this situation for yourself not him.

Thanks for understanding. I have been kicking myself for the past 3 days for not canceling earlier.

It's a tough situation to be in, and so happens my hosting bills are due by next week, and I have very little Paypal funds to cover that. So I have to draw from my credit card, which means higher fees. A needless expense.

So you and anybody else can expect me to get stressed out over this and of course when the marketer just keeps quiet, even though he knows all about it (remember I notified him within hours), and does nothing....now that pisses me off like no other. Would it surprise you guys that I've not received a single email from him?

I did get a short, terse message from him via his forum, to go to his helpdesk...nothing more or since.

And I tried to keep this under wraps and did not open a Paypal dispute until 3 days later.

I really don't understand why the long wait when ALL the refunds I've ever had took 1-3 days MAX....unless the funds I sent him got withdrawn that very day itself....and he doesn't want to own up to that. That's all I can assume at this point, but an email would have made a lot of difference....

Another thing which just occurred to me in order to prevent such similar incidents from happening again is for Paypal to implement an advance email warning/alert 3 days in advance for any subscription renewals that we specify in our account.

Rather like your domain registrar warning you about your expiring domains...days in advance....

I don't think it will cost Paypal too much to implement this and could possibly help prevent such incidents from occurring in future.

Would save you and me the HASSLE of trying to wrangle a refund back....in the cases of some marketers...

I remember the Google Adsense Allowed Sites feature came about because of one guy's experience with a competitor abusing his pub ID on illegal sites, and it became a topic in Digital Point forum....and some staff from Google agreed that it was a good idea.

Update: Finally gotten the refund from the IMer in question. After a lot of sledging...and several sleepless nights... Finally, he got back to me.... and refunded me. I'm relieved and tired at the same time, but GLAD that it's over.

I still stand by my statements, but at the same time, I admit my mistake was not canceling beforehand... this was a terrible situation no matter how you look at it.

So guys, don't let this happen to you too....

                  About my Paypal idea:

I wish Paypal could implement a subscription reminder feature which we could activate for certain subscriptions.

Now that would really cut out all the hassles (and potential hassles)....

I don't understand what "hassle" you had to do. You submitting a refund request and they gave it to you. They don't have to refund you immediately. I know in the states they have up to 30 days to refund your credit card.

Just because you wanted it immediately doesn't mean they need to stop all other business or personal activities to give you a refund.

It seems you got the refund in a respectable time frame and you still make it sound like you went through hell and back.

This was your mistake but you decided to put it all on the marketer. I don't think that is fair to the marketer at all.

It's not paypal's job to monitor your subscriptions - you have the ability to look at them any time you want for any period of time you want. If you don't do it, it's your fault and no one else's.

Your need for money now has no bearing on your cancellation or the time period for a refund. Don't buy or subscribe unless you have the money to pay. Don't assume it's someone else's responsibility to remind you that payments are being made for a subscription.

I wouldn't hold out hope that Paypal will help. I've been dealing with them for several years with a product I bought that was not what I ordered, was in bad shape, etc. They still refused to refund my money unless I returned a huge piece of furniture at my expense, even though the seller was refusing to have any contact with me. A nightmare! From now on, I pay via credit card only b/c they have no problem charging something back!

I completely agree with Thomas on this one!

Also, did you consider it's a holiday weekend (at least here in Canada) so relax. It's amazing how many people get upset when they don't get a response to their problem within seconds no matter what time of day, night or weekend it is.

You keep talking about the hassels and poor customer service this marketer "put you through".

Frankly, it sounds to me like you put him through more. You say that you "notified him within hours" of the renewal that you wanted a refund. Apparently you made this request on his product forum? You get angry when he posts that you should make this request through the help desk. What did you expect? That he would stop everything and issue your refund?

It sounds like you were refunded within 3 days - this is not an unreasonable time frame for a refund. How many times have you written him concerning this? I bet a lot!

You suggest that PayPal should initiate a reminder feature for subscription payments. That wouldn't have helped you - you thought of this subscription a month ago. You knew then that you wanted to cancel it and you didn't. Even had PayPal reminded you of the subscription renewal coming up you probably wouldn't have canceled it.

You've continuously accused this marketer of poor customer service and needlessly putting you through hassels, stressful days and sleepless nights. Excuse me - but baloney!

      Guys, cut the slack ok?

Let me just say that if you were in my shoes, what would you do?

Oh yeah, sit there and grin, everything's well...No, that's baloney!

Read what I had to say. I said...a simple email could have diffused a lot of things.

Tell me, how long does it take to log into Paypal, or how long it takes to write short a note??

      2 minutes, 5 minutes?

Come on, had I just sat on my bum here, nothing would get done until next week! It could have been longer than 3 days....

I had to open a Paypal dispute, and endure a couple of sleepless nights! Only AFTER 3 days! I did not slate the marketer at all during the 3 days. But the guy just stonewalled....

For any marketer with an ounce of brains, let me say this: Here's a chance to shine, and come out a winner (even with a refund). I know I would act differently.

      Think about that.

Sure, I'm only saying you could (you don't have to) turn a situation around to your advantage. Even when it comes to a mistake from the customer...don't we all forget things? I did not wait one week to come back and tell him, "Hey refund me, I want to cancel."

It was very, very clear I needed a decisive response and I wanted to cancel on the very day itself. So, if for any reason the marketer could not do so, he should have communicated that with me. I would understand.

I have an idea what's good business practice and what's bad business practice. Being incommunicado for days, now that is not good business practice. So, why should I apologize for him, as well as for myself?

So admitting my mistake means I need to grin and bear it? If the refund took one week from now, just grin and bear it? It's ALL my fault, right?

So you're saying he has a right to be a stonewall for days? Ok, that's his right, but like you say in chess, you have bad moves, you have average moves, and you have the best move.

So why not ask, what should he have done?

hehe I know, I know it isn't reality. Let me at least dream of it.

I am really glad you got your refund and it all worked out Dellco.

If I read your posts right, it seems that you were told you would need to wait for a response. So that expectation was laid out right up front for you.

Secondly -- you're seeing this from your point of view, in that it would take YOU just a couple minutes to log in and do the refunds.

However, here's a possibility: This person outsources customer service. The CS folks handle inquiries through the help desk. However, the marketer needs to come in to personally process refunds. And instead of sitting by his computer processing every refund the moment it comes in, he does them once per week.

Makes sense, right? That would explain why you were told you'd need to wait for a response.

You might not like the responses you're getting here (and I can understand that). However, when you're feeling less emotional about the whole thing, think about what's being said here. These responses actually go beyond dealing with just the refund issue -- people are giving you one of the "secrets" to success.

Ready for it? Here it is: Successful people realize they are FULLY in control of everything that happens to them. If something good happens, they take credit. If something bad happens, they take responsibility.

Almost without fail, the most successful people on this forum (and everywhere else) have this mindset. It's really worth developing.

Example 1: You're running through the house and stub your toe on a book on the floor. Do you:

        A. Yell, "who the heck left this book on the floor?"

        or

        B. Think, "geeze, I need to watch where I'm going. Next time I'll be more careful."

Example 2: You're in college. You flunk a test. Do you:

        A. Say, "Stupid prof tricked us and made the test too hard."

        or

        B. Think, "Next time I'll study harder... especially now that I know what kind of tests the prof gives."

Example 3: Your PP account gets nicked because of a recurring subscription...

        (well, you get the picture)

        Cheers,
        Becky

I can understand that it's Dellco's responsibility to unsubscribe
but I also understand his perspective. When you are under
a lot of financial pressure your judgment of "long time" and
    "short time" get very skewed.

If he didn't need the money right away, this would not have been
    an issue.

I've had 6 month subscribers who suddenly realized that they
should have unsubscribed as soon as the payment goes
through. It's a hassle to give a refund because they could
have taken care of this without any input on your part.

But, I sometimes forget as well. Human nature. So I should
take the blame--the ideal situation--but if you really need
that money your perspective changes very quickly.

You are right - your perspective DOES change when you are under
financial pressure. Usually, that means taking a serious look at your
expenses to see how quickly you can cut corners and by how much.

In Dellco's case... the money was needed for running his business.
He should have known how much he had and how much he was lacking
well before his subscription came due.

      Dellco...

You thought about cancelling a month earlier - and didn't.
Then, you zipped in a cancellation a measly 2 HOURS before the payment
was due. Personally, I'd like to know how you managed to cut it so close.
How did you know exactly what time of day the payment would go through?

Do you mean you cancelled at 10 p.m the previous evening?

Or did you assume it was 2 hours because the payment went through
2 hours after you last looked at your Paypal account?

Either way, you have to realize that the planet occupies 24 hours - so
      when it's 10 p.m. to you, it could be anywhere from 10 p.m. to 10 p.m.
the next day (or previous day) depending on where you live.

Plus... as you will notice when you receive money or make payments
with PayPal, it does tell you that it can take a couple of hours before
the transaction will show in your account. In other words, your subscription
likely was already in the works when you cancelled.

The rest has been said already so I won't repeat.

I will add, however, that any refunds I have requested took at least 3 days.
After submitting my request (either by email or through their HelpDesk, I
noted the procedure, ie: wait while they investigated your case, and I waited).
A polite follow-up email or support ticket always brings a respectful and
      timely response from the owner.

It takes time for your request to be evaluated (ie: do you actually have a
legitimate case), for the business owner to go through his accounts and
take care of refund requests, and for the refund transaction to go through
      his end AND yours.

What was your subscription? A software service? Access to an online
newsletter or PLR content? You have to consider the owner's point of view.
Once you pay, you will have had access to that content for the next month.
By refunding you, he could lose the value for whatever he was selling.

In the end, and all things considered, you did well getting your refund in a
respectable time frame. The problem was not from the owner - it was your
poor budgeting skills, forgetfulness and probably a few more things that
      caused your financial situation.

If you are running a business on such a tight budget, you can't blame this
person because you couldn't afford your upcoming hosting. You are relying
entirely on getting the refund for your survival.

Don't get me wrong. I've been in such dire situations myself where that
refund would buy my next meal. It's painful - you lose sleep - you develop
stress - just like you did.

Perhaps this exercise has taught you many lessons about budgeting,
scheduling, communication skills and personal accountability.
