Considering Publishing...should I?

I've been thoroughly reading through Xfactor's 3rd Adsense Master Course (anyone have any opinions on it?) and the concept of simply writing about what you love and monetizing it with Adsense (or whatever else you choose to monetize a content site with) has really grabbed me. However, I'm unsure if I should pull the trigger on a large publishing site, and I'm talking about 100s of pages of content here...

My issue is this-I have a niche picked, and I am very passionate about said niche. But, I know nothing about it. Weird, right? I'll go ahead and give away my super secret niche hehe...it's travel, more specifically, to Europe. I've never even been to Europe, but I love everything about it when I see it. I'm confident I could make many articles that grab readers (people are passionate about travel, am I right? ) attention and keep it. But knowing nothing about traveling to Europe, I'm unsure of whether or not I should go through with this.

Also, has anyone else read the 3rd Edition of the Adsense Masters Course? Am I reading a garbage book? Because I've been really enjoying it so far.

Thanks!

I am not sure creating a website in such a saturated market is a good idea for your first try, particularly since you don't really know anything about the particulars. The best you will be doing is rewriting what you learn from others - while this isn't always bad, it will severly limit the value you can bring.

Building a long term business requires adding value and I am not sure you can do that in this niche if you have never traveled to Europe. I would recommend choosing a passion you are more knowlegable about so you can give your customers value.

I can't vouch for the course, although I've been to 6 or 7 countries in Europe. If you're super passionate about it, though, grab some books on different countries at the library and read up. IMHO that's the best way to learn about your subject matter short of actually going there, and by far the cheapest route, and if you're really into it, you should have no trouble.

Plus you'll get more knowledge about what you're already very interested in, which can never hurt. Reading books on a topic is much more holistic than trying to create a framework for what you're going to write and then fill it in, and it's much more natural. I've always had the feeling that readers can tell when someone really knows the ins and outs and is interested in something and when they're just doing it because they have to.

I was not expecting instant success with such a large project . This is a big thing that would take money months, or longer, before I started seeing decent income (if any at all! )

The market may be saturated and you not knowing much about Europe does make it tough, however, I think you could still make a killing from it. SEO is pretty much out of the question, but you said " I love everything about it when I see it" so I'm assuming you "love" looking at pictures or maybe reading articles? Well if that's so congrats you just find your business plan.

This is what I would do:
-Start a blog & since I don't know much about Europe I would find syndicate content to post on my site. (Get this from Artilce Directories or ask other blog owners)
-Find/Hire a photographer to take some awesome unique pictures and put them up on FB & Pinterist with a link to your blog
-Use FB to also promote your articles that you found to drive traffic to the blog
-Promote videos of Europe or "to do" things that's almost like a 360 tour on Youtube and other video sites w/ a link to your blog of course.

These 3 methods allow you to go "viral" and also use unique content that if you found enjoyable, others should as well. After a while you should have a nice consistent amount of traffic to your blog where you can have CPA offers for travel leads, Google Adsense, or any other options you choose for monetizing.

Hopefully this gives you an idea of how you can turn your passion into a business

Not knowing about the niche really doesn't matter a jot if you are passionate about it because you can learn and write as you go.

Don't let people put you off Adsense either. Just because they might not be able to make it pay doesn't mean you can't. I have a large content site with thousands of pages and make a healthy chunk of change with Adsense.

Adsense can work but it takes a TON of work. I've been in and out of Adsense several times over the years. Let me share a couple of potential pitfalls:

      1) Getting your sites ranked and optimized and then having Panda/Penguin knock them down. Been there done that. All your hard work will be ruined. Be VERY CAREFUL about both your content and the LINKs pointing to that content. My content was great, but I had too many bad links which rendered many of my sites worthless.

      2) Investing a ton of time into your site putting up 100s of pages only to find that you still can't rank well OR that the niche doesn't pay very well.

I'm not saying that you can't make some nice money from your idea, I'm just saying BE CAREFUL and use due diligence, quality content, and quality back links. It really sucks to watch 2-3 years of hard work go down the tubes ...

No, you aren't reading a garbage book. John has put a lot of work into the ebook course and the layout and info are impressive.

But - what you have to guard against is giving yourself excuses not to do something. A great big site is a good plan - but several medium sites isn't a bad plan either. It's your plan so do it your way.

Before you have a huge site - you have to start the site. As the subject is one you find fascinating - learning and writing about it would be fun.

Of course things can go wrong - but that's an excuse people use to justify never getting started. So google changes - you adapt to the change and keep going. Long term sites online have been dong that song and dance for years.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

Yes, I believe that is my biggest downfall...I am very worried about failing and it causes me to be hesitant. I need to learn to just go for it and whatever happens, happens. I did consider the several medium sites route you suggested, and I am a bit torn between the two choices. On one hand, one large site would be less likely to be killed by a Google update (as long as I write quality content, not spun trash). However, one site can and will take a long time to build up, and if it fails, that is not a good thing to have wasted a lot of time on. With several smaller sites, if one or more fails, I have backups.

            You are doing it again

            Ask yourself two simple questions:

What is the worst that can happen if I do this?
Can I survive if the worst happens?

You can choose a wrong niche or get sloppy with keywords and not get the results you want....and have to start over.

You won't be in pain, you won't bleed, you won't be in jail....so how bad can it be?

It's good to recognize things that "might happen" - but you can't let those things stop you from trying. If you second guess to the point where you do nothing....you guarantee failure. THAT is the worst that can happen.

Thanks sciguy, perhaps I should have been more specific in my OP...but I do not want to solely use Adsense to monetize a site. I hear all the time on these forums: "Don't put all your eggs in one basket", so it would be foolish of me to put in so much work into a site only to have my main source of income (being Adsense in this case) vanish if the big G decides to ban my account. There's plenty of products on CB, CPA offers for travel out there I'm sure, oh and I can't forget e-mail marketing! I'm not sure where I can find a good amount of offers to promote like this (short of creating my own), but hopefully I can find some!

Well, as long as you own the site, you'll have plenty of ways to monetize it. Adsense is definitely one of the ways. In case if adsense ban you (for whatever reason), you'll still be able to easily replace adsense with other 3rd party advertising platform (Amazon, clickbank, Cpa networks to name a few).

I wouldn't worry much about monetization as of now (because no one makes a lot when they are just starting out), I'd rather focus on quality content.

Once you have a steady flow of traffic to your website then you should consider monetizing it. Now, the best to do is to just focus on writing quality content and building a relationship with your visitors (consider adding an opt-in form).

      Good luck with your blog
      Jeremiah
