IP Address Database?

Does anyone know of a reliable source to rent an IP address database which can be used to create an online service?

The online service would allow clients to redirect traffic according to IP address location.

Maxmind and ip2location seem to be for internal use only, so any suggestions would be very helpful.

  • If you said what the service was for, it would REALLY help! Are you trying to geotag? If so, WHY? geotaging is not even 100% correct. BTW with ipv4, IP details change like every SECOND! The BEST you can hope for is a coarse and incomplete snapshot. And that means you CAN'T buy a list for that, but must lease it or rent it.

    Of course, if you are looking for even LESS accuracy, you can get like the IANA layer. They allocate given ranges to countries. THAT changes infrequently. I don't know how often but it could be maybe years! of course IT would only tell you what country has the right to allocate the name at the lowest level. MOST american IPs will likely go to american hosts. If a local american company uses it, it will remain american. But that is not always the case.

    • Hi Steve, it would be for redirection of traffic relating to IP location, I meant rent as opposed to a one off purchase as I do appreciate that IPs change.

      GEO tagging should be reasonably accurate at country and region/state level though surely?

  • Do you mean IP address like 101.129.0.0 something like that? if that is the case if you only need the ips you can create a script that will loop until you reach 255.255.255.255

    • Over 48GB for that? MOST that want to use such a thing look for the pattern. It is quicker, and might use only a few dozen bytes. Frankly, I think he wants geotagging, which would have select ranges with company and/or country. It's popular, but it really isn't reliable. You are asking one company to tell you something that could change in an instant and maybe only the customers customer of the company that they point to knows the REAL story.

    • Yes its an IP address like you say, but I doubt what you are suggesting would deliver same service as Maxmind and ip2location.

    IP - Location
    or
    IP - domain

    or something else?

    We have fresh and constantly updated DB of IP <-> domain data.
