I couldn't hear anything when the french reporter was on screen.

For the parts I did hear, however, it does suck that the dregs of the IM world get publicized like this. Coupled with the media's obsession to find some 'bad guy' in society, it creates an unfortunate association for other marketers.

Like the other day, I was trying to explain the list building process to a friend and she was all, "You're one of those email spammers? OMG!".

Let these people think what they want to think about us. We know that we are doing the right thing and helping others at the same time.

They used to talk a lot about Amway years ago and said that it was a scam. These reporters and news stations know by now that this network marketing industry is a very legitimate and an honest one and only say good things.

This is the first thing the average Joe will always say, and yes, it's irritating.

Personally, i don't ever explain the process of list-building to anyone. But if one day i had to, i would choose my words carefully and say "Newsletter." I include a newsletter to keep my readers informed. This is more widely accepted as most "brand" websites use this term for the average, ignorant Joe.

Unfortunately there are those who spam, hack and steal - but they are in any profession. I worked in medicine for over 20 years and met and interacted with my share of physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, occupational therapists and on and on who cheated, stole and lied.

When people ask how a single mom can stay home with her children (who hasn't inherited lots and lots of money!) I tell them that I am a writer and do some website design and development (cause I do my own) - that usually answers their questions enough

YESSSS, that's what I also say; no internet marketing stuff whatsoever. After all, most marketers do write at some point (updating their blog, sending out emails constantly, building info products, etc.) So my official answers are "Content writer" and/or "Web designer."

I say "technical writer". It sounds complicated enough, so nobody actually asks me what it means.

Lol yup that too; I actually write lots of technical stuff on Demand Media Studios and Text Broker, so we have a lot of things to tell others. I just finished watching that video the OP posted, and daaaaaawmn it's biased.

What is weird is that if the product was scammy, they should go after the seller as well? maybe?

the dregs of the IM world get publicized like this
I think the segment was well presented. It's easy now to say "wow, too bad they showed IM in a bad light" - but that particular product was mentioned quite a bit here some time ago.

I thought it was a somewhat balanced view of a very real topic. These were scammers - yes. But they succeeded because of affiliate marketers willing to promote anything that would make money.

Most disturbing was that so many 'affiliate marketers' making big money with promotion and CPA offers of this scam product were 15-16 years old at the time. They were computer savvy and smart enough to make money but not mature enough to see the potential consequences of what they were doing.

That´s a very interesting point. They probably had to use their parents accounts, yet they were working unsupervised?

Oh sure. I was thinking about this and realized this may be a generational thing.

Today many parents of teens are so proud of their kid's abilities "on the computer" they don't look closely to see what their kids are doing online.

They didn't grow up with computers in every classroom and every home as their kids have. The parents are computer savvy but many don't worry about what their kids do online as long as they don't access porn sites.

People I know are more likely to brag about their teen's ability to make some extra money on their computer...than to look into exactly how the money is being earned or paid. That will change when today's teens have their own kids. In that future generaiton, the parents will know what can and does "go on". Poor kids won't have a chance.

Well... my kids are bugging me to start doing something online and they are not even teens. They are heavily supervised, though.

I think it's great when kids want to do something online - I don't think it's so great when the focus is to make money.

Watching 20/20 last night it occurred to me those young men didn't stop to think at the time about what they were promoting and what consequences those promotions could have. That kind of thinking is not usually part of a teen's mindset - they are looking for the "now picture".

Several of those featured now have criminal records and had to pay huge fines. Harsh learning experience for the ones who were just "looking to make some money online".

My son and daughter-in-law each have two personal computers and my Grandson's computer is right there in the home office with their work computers where they can see what's going on.

What I don't understand is how parents don't notice when their kids are earning this kind of money - do they not see or not care?

yes, to go after their passions and express themselves should be the first focus. My daughter has a weebly site where she posts information about dogs, she photographs them and talks with the owners when we go to the park, then she finds out the breed (or close enough) and talks about the characteristics.

But now they are starting to bug me about building a business, I was thinking on fiverr and image manipulation - transforming photos in watercolor, that kind of thing, they are both quite good at that.

Did everyone realize, that the news never have anything positive to report about?

In reality, there are so much good news out there, that even a whole hour of news reporting could not cover all the good things that are happening everyday. Why don't they interview Allen instead?

I've long given up on keeping up with mainstream news. They do more harm than good.

One of the things I laugh at about Internet marketing is how many of the tactics used are "evil". Well as long as the OTHER guy is doing them, anyway. SOOO hypocritical.

For instance, they can't STAND the massive amounts of spam they get in their inbox, or the crap results when they are searching for an important solution.

Meanwhile they are reaching over to hit the "Submit" button to blast their list with yet another "look at me me me me me me" email. And slapping another idealistic post on their site which is just shy of being a flog.

Yet that's only spam as long as the OTHER guy is doing it. Certainly not MYYYYYyyyyyyyyy very valuable marketing email announcing JimmyJaneyJillyJoe's most super duper "product" launch.

I think I just threw up a little.

If marketers shifted their focus from how much money can I make and how fast, to how can I genuinely help you, it'd be extremely surprising to them how EASY PEASY mmo really is.
