Google Keyword Traffic Estimator - Any Luck?

I know google's traffic estimator is just that - an estimator, but I'm finding so far with every site I've built around a specific keyword - the actual search results are not even in the same ballpark as what google's estimator told me.

I have a term high on the first page of google that apparently gets 40k searches a month. It's been on the first page for 2 weeks now and has had 11 searches total for that keyword......11.

Another site gets roughly 6k searches for its keyword per month, and it too is high on the first page of google (#3 - #4) for a couple weeks now. It's had a whopping 0 search results for its keyword in that time.

This has been my experience so far with it. I have spent a decent amount of time and money marketing these sites to reach the top of google, and its a little frustrating to see all that was in vain. Anyone else getting similar results, or did I just get really unlucky?

General rule of thumb is that the tool is about 30% off the mark. Using it in "broad match" is a waste of time too - IMHO!

Yea, now that I remember doing some websites using wordtracker, the traffic wasn't too far off from its estimates.

Maybe a better approach would be to use google analyzer to uncover keywords, and then double check wordtracker and/or seobook with the results.

I don't like google traffic estimator from the day one I found about it. It just doesn't look authentic. I personally use seobook keyword tool and then compare it with adwords keyword tool to get a better idea of traffic.
