so it really doesn't matter to me that this list is "small". the point is that it must have taken several hours of trial and error for you to put this list together. hopefully it will save others tons of time.

Great list! Although I would definitely add onlineprnews.com and prlog.org. Although I typically submit to premium PR sites, I have had a lot of success with prlog... most of my press releases hit Google News and often get displayed for the keywords I am targeting. Several releases have yielded thousands of visitors within just 48 hrs. Onlineprnews also is good, they are a "newer" release site.. But their free one also gets picked up by google news and indexed almost immediately. Hope that helps!

You are asking a bit too much.

Free press release places are like article directories but for articles worded as news. That´s it. Some get picked up, but only the paid ones actively push the content.

I might be wrong, but that is what came as conclusion from the time I researched them.

Some of them get to first page easy with some link love. They are useful when you are doing campaigns.

Also, to add to that - exactrelease and pagerelease I would deem a bit questionable - Seem spammpy, no PR, lots of crappy/bad english written releases it looks like.

I dont think that free is all time safe.Many people are going for paid versions and also they are getting better result

Thanks for taking the time to post the short list. Some of the sites I have used to advantage. I use both paid and free sites as part of my SEO efforts. Though paid distribution has been more predictable for me, the real key is quality of the releases. Where I have taken the time to craft newsworthy submissions with good headlines, I have been more successful. That is still a learning process for me but worth the effort.

I'll take your list and do some case studies to try and improve my results. Thanks again for your post.

Does anyone have specific experience with their winners?

I like that they did some actual testing and analysis ... Your mileage may vary, of course. Quality will always matter, and spam is spam, no matter how you dress it up. If the reader can actually say, "Now THAT is interesting!" after they've read your release, then you've done the right thing.

Just thought I would put my thoughts in here, as an SEO guy I can tell you that press releases are one of the most under utilized tools for both generating traffic and quality links for SEO.

Press releases work and one slightly controversial press release over at PR web can and does send an avalanche of traffic, even free press release sites are a great source of both traffic and links.

So thank you for sharing your list(s) this is good information for anyone wanting to generate links and traffic from high page rank trusted sites.

Hi Katherine,
I just did a run with these pr sites this morning, plus a couple more,

PR Urgent News - Free Press Release and News Distribution (the winner of 2012 from a link posted up there, sorry for being so vague)

Book Marketing and Publicity for Writers and Authors from BiblioScribe (especific for books)

Thought of giving you a heads up:

The one picked up faster by google was:

Press Release Distribution Service | I-Newswire.com™

It is SEOd, and it was the only one I twitted.

This site is picked up by topix.com

About 30 minutes after publishing, there were 6 results in google web (title of the press release with quotes).

After a couple of hours Biblio Scribe was published and picked up. It was edited, a direct link changed by hyperlink.

From the others,

only2press.com had automatic publication, doesn´t look like a press release site, more of a community that allows article publishing. Did not show up in google.

pressreleasespider.com also has automatic publication

There are two I did not try, the ones that were called out as spammy. Still waiting for the others.
