How Much Should I Charge to Write an Ebook?

Hey Warriors!

I have a client who needs me to write a 10 page Ebook for him but Im not exactly sure how much to charge.

Considering research and time writing I was thinking maybe $100-$200 including an ebook design...

Is that a fair margin?

    ebook design = between $5 - $500

    10 page ebook = between $10 - $10,000

How much do you think you are worth?

Are you prepared to walk away if the client wants to pay peanuts?

If I were writing it? Absolutely not.

You need to charge what you think you are worth.

If you are just starting out with your writing business, do not feel like you need to charge "lower" prices to compete with other content providers.

I made that mistake when I first started out; it ends only in a price contest where both content creators end up charging pennies per word.

Charge what you think you are worth, state your case why you are worth that much, and the clients that understand that high-quality content does not come cheaply will pay you accordingly.

10 pages isn't really an 'ebook' but more of a special report. 400 words or 1 page will often go for between 10-25.00 Coupled into a report 10 pages would be baseline 100.00 most places who use writers whose primary language is English. That price includes the research and writing. There is some great formatting on Fiverr for around 5.00 per 5 pages. Then there is the cover for the report.

The client may very well want it all for 50.00 - you decide what your time is worth and whether you want to take the job. You might want to undercut the price just to get a great testimonial. If the testimonial is worth it to you for future business that's another consideration.

Pick your price, have a solid reason that makes sense to you and then don't waiver. As writers we have to be prepared to walk away if it doesn't make sense for our time and energy or fit the plan in our business model.

You tell me. As a writer you have to set your own prices based on the quality you provide and time spent creating. Some people would do a report like that for $20. Some, like me, wouldn't settle unless the price was much higher. Keep in mind that good blog writers are charging $150-200 for a 500-1000 word post. That's about half a page or one page. Different set of criteria than an ebook, yes, but hopefully that opens some people's eyes.

Remember that the report will likely involve research as well, unless you're already an expert on the topic. Factor that into your calculations, and remember that as a freelancer you're already cutting ~15% out of your profits for taxes (if you're in the U.S. at least).

If you have no name recognition as a writer but have samples and the client has taken the next step after samples then you need to decide what your time is worth.

But, for GOOD English writers who can write a truly entertaining report (10 pages is not really a book but a report) I can get that all over for about $25 per page.

That's for something that when I read it I really enjoyed it.

The stuff on fiver is well... hmmm... um.... (my grandma always said "If you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all") We'll leave it at that.
