Tired of Long Videos & MP3's

I guess I am just so tired of getting access to a new program and they have 10 or more videos in the member's area and each video runs longer than 25 minutes.

Don't get me wrong video is nice... but with every Internet Marketer telling everyone to create videos and mp3's you have people that create unnecessary long ones. I mean the height of being ridiculous is when I listened to a video of Dan Kennedy (I think >< ) and for the first 35 minutes of the mp3 he talked about himself etc. The mp3 was 95 minutes long. Now tell me that isn't just plain stupidity. He was boring me to death actually. The initial few minutes were like...okay, this is how you started way back then in marketing. But he goes on and on. He also "Uhms" and "Ahs" a lot and goes off into directions that has no consistent flow. He would start talking about what happened when he was a kid in school, then mid sentence he would refer to the fact that he has to talk about :"How to create a $100,000 in 90 days" at this seminar. It was really frustrating.

Personally nowadays I download the mp3's and videos, but unless they are less than 15 minutes long, I do not bother. It's a waste of my time. Therefore I have tons of material on my hard drive that I have never listened to.

I prefer to read the pdf's. At least it's easier going through a 90 page pdf then to listen to stuff that has no meaning or frustratingly sit through long mp3's.

Does anyone else get annoyed with long videos and mp3's or do you enjoy watching lots of videos/listen to long mp3's?

What would you think is acceptable in terms of time for a video and mp3's?

Example some people (like me) can watch videos for 15 minutes, and mp's ...well I prefer them to be less than 10 minutes in length actually. A 6 minute mp3 would be ideal for me.

That audio was probably ripped from a seminar he was running.

Telling a story is usually a must, that's what I see most speakers start up with during seminars anyway...

Well, there are a few things to bear in mind here...

      1. Sometimes there can bean over delivery on the part of the product creator in terms of the content that they are giving (like me hehehe)

      2. Somtimes an introduction is necessary during a live show or a seminar as Adeel has said although it might just be ridiculous to listen to it later on as a recording... so just skip it off.

      3. the best products out there come in all three modalities(audio, video and text ie transcription) so this is a good insight into a customers mind over here.

      4. Whenever someone creates a freebie they want to brand themselves so you can not always expect to get the mat for zilch.

The only advantage of a video for me is when I leave it running in a window while I do my work in another But if I want to seriously go over the information in the video, nothing beats a transcript.

It'll be good if there are ways to bypass videos on some salespages, though.

          Thanks for everyone's insight.

I prefer text over video anyday...unless it's an anime series of course

Well sometimes I have enjoyed video if it shows me something I hold valuable. I think over the years, I have read so many ebooks, that one ebook is rarely different than another out there. So my focus as of late has been on finding quality scripts. I test all kinds of scripts. If I don't like it, I move on to the next. So the only time I hold videos in high regard, is if it teaches me how to install the script that otherwise would be too complicated to do it on my own. But even then I skip through parts... just to get it done.

The videos I have been not paying too much attention to are the one where you have no controls on someones squeeze page or sales page i.e. fast forward, pause etc.

If I feel I MUST pay attention, I will open another tab and *listen* to the video while flipping back and forth if it sounds like its important that I have to see what's on the screen.

I must admit it's a great trick to put up video like that, but it can annoy the customers.

At least with MP3's you can forward through them to your hearts content.

I regard myself as a pretty intelligent individual. To sit down and actually listen to someone go on and on during the "intro" portion bores me to death.

When presented with a marketing plan or an investment opportunity...I always cut the presenter short and tell him/her to cut to the chase and give me what I want to hear... HOW DO I MAKE MONEY? hahahaha

                    Hey Sarah,

                    I understand your frustration....

The trouble is that not everyone is able to present themselves
                    or to communicate efficiently.

Most have never completed a "presentations skills" course and
as a result they come across very poorly with an unstructured
                    presentation.

It's very different when you take the time to plan the presentation
                    and then present without waffling....

Most of them waffle endlessly and that is why the transcript/pdf
is so much better because the waffle is deleted...

                    Regards

                    Greg

I went through a phase of downloading lots of MP3's a few years ago when I first bought an MP3 player but I'm bored of them now.

It's the same with videos. They just take up too much of my time. So if they're longer than 5 minutes I simply don't bother with them.

I'm with you on this one. The reason alot of audio and video is to long(besides fluff factor) is that most marketers don't script their recording beforehand. It's all done in real time, so they wing it abit and babble about this and that...huge time waster.

                        Much love,

I disagree about the long videos for newbies - I thnk the same applies for video and MP3 as it does for text. If you don't capture them in the first minute maybe then it's over (longer than text) but NO ONE has an extra 95 minutes to watch or listen to stuff that is mostly intro.

So while that would have worked live when it was edited for sale or give away on the web a shorter - 5 minute - intro could have been added. Even when I'm out walking or jogging with my iPod if it's too boring I switch to something else. Time is precious and I don't have enough of it.

If it cost $10000 per minute to produce a video, marketers would produce short "to the point" videos which would rivet their viewers attention to the intended message.

But I guess there's no thud factor to a single DVD, or a 2 megabyte video download...

lakshaybehl- I completely understand what you mean. In my case I am different than most people here. So let me explain to you what type of person I am.

I am a researcher at heart.

The topic of business pulled to me when I was (thinks) 12 years old. I remember it well. My school wanted to introduce an entrepreneur class, and it focused on starting your own small business. At that age, I think they realized not too many kids would be interested so it was discarded after two class sessions. Since then I have endlessly consumed - data - to my heart's content. I devoured every book on business at my school and local library and when they ran out of subjects, my interest turned to marketing. Plain and normal marketing. Mind you the book was a good 400 odd pages thick. Took me longer than 3 days to read through it. By the time I reached 16 years of age, I had consumed so much knowledge from various resources that when kids talked about normal things they usually do, it never even interested me.

Perhaps that was the transformation then.

I realised that I am not like everyone else.

I continued to consume knowledge and by the time I reached 24 years of age, I knew more about most occult religions, business, marketing, publishing, small businesses than I care to admit. But that is exactly what I do. I have studied Internet Marketing in all it's forms for the past 7 years. Still I do not see it as a business. As a researcher and someone who loves pure knowledge in every form ... all I can say...

                      It's my hobby.

I come from a country where the internet is unaccessible to about 79% of the population since it's too expensive. So I had no one to teach me even how to use a computer. I literally figured everything out- today I can do virtually anything on the internet. You have absolutely no idea . It is easy to do that when you devour knowledge. After all, we are capable of so much more. Problem is, I am still pretty bored in my life. I am still seeking for something unobtainable and will get it when the time is right. As of now, I am here, happy and sharing...and discussing with normal people like you on topics they find an interest in. In the process I study human behavior and learn the fundamentals of what humans want and need.

So going through scrips, ebooks, mp3's... it's all for the sake of knowledge. What would someone do with all that knowledge they have amassed over the years?

Kyle Tully- The key to making money where someone pulls in $100,000 an event isn't that far fetched. It can take any person to pull out a wallet and pay money if they have it. Most will never do anything with what they receive and most will never even listen or try to understand it. Besides, Dan Kennedy is a person. Not some god. If I were clever enough I would also target people so desperate to make money that they would literally throw their money at me. All it takes is some experience in exceptional presentation skills and the proof to back me up. Doesn't mean you will achieve the same results as me, since you are not me. They are wolves among sheep Kyle, it is very easy to see that. Sure people will teach their methods of making money, but they are not that stupid to let you know that a lot of their income derives from investors, other companies and talking at seminars where people pay a hell of a lot of money to attend. Because the sad truth is...if someone is still 58 years (talking about famous IM people I have seen on video myself) and still do presentations, then you have to ask yourself. Is he charging $5000.00 a head because he loves himself that much or does he need the money. I think it would be obvious in this case since most people here on this forum wants to make money. He is doing it for the same reason. To make money. So all this talk of how easy it is to create a system and then forget about it while the money rolls in...there are less than 1% in this world that achieves that. Most people still work for themselves.

OK... yeah making $100k at an event isn't far fetched, it happens regularly... but just as often there are guys that don't make a cent from the back of the room.

Dan Kennedy is one of the best platform speakers out there, and if what you were listening to was in fact one of those speeches then there is a lot to be learned from it. (Remembering that it is a pitch and not content.)

I'm not sure what people not acting on what you sell them has to do with anything?

Years and years of presentation skills training, honed over hundreds of thousands of miles traveling the country perfecting your pitch... PLUS real world proof from hundreds of businesses you've worked with... thousands of books sold... millions (billions?) of dollars worth of sales...

Of course it doesn't mean you will get the same results. What counts is your results. And in Dan Kennedy's case the real world results from people that have ACTED on his materials speaks for itself.

His material is top notch and works.

The sad truth is nothing of what you stated.

You seem to think the only reason people are in business is because a) they love themselves, or b) they need the money.

There's a sad truth you reveal about yourself in that statement.

For guys like Kennedy, business is pleasure. If you'd read any of his materials or really listened to him when he speaks you'd know this. He's said a number of times that retirement isn't in his blood. His "play" is business.

                        Some people enjoy their work.

Fast forward is your friend. Skip ahead to the middle, sometimes even close to the end, and see if there's anything worthwhile.

I saw one not too long ago, and the introduction started on the ground floor of a building, then they went to the rooftop to introduce everyone that would be in the video, then (finally) they went to the room where they did the bulk of the filming and had a brief intro there too. For me, the ground floor and rooftop scenes could have been cut completely. They were an utter waste of time. If the video had not been recommended, they would have lost me before they got to any good content.

That's a key thing too. If someone recommends a video, you're more inclined to watch it because you don't want to miss whatever valuable information you've been promised. But, without some kind of recommendation, you're going to be looking for the controls to fast forward or whatever it takes to skip through the video to find something worthwhile.

And, if the video doesn't have any controls, it has about 5-10 seconds to grab my interest before I'm moving on to a different website.

My customers loved downloading our educational videos because they come with what we called "Fluff-free transcripts", which means it comes with TIME CODE in the TRANSCRIBED PDF next to the subject, so anyone can download the videos and browse through the transcript to see what part of the video they want to watch...

...and even the transcripts are just the meat cliffnotes, it's not even a real transcript!!!! It just contains all meat without the bread content alongside the exact timing of where it is in the video so people can get any sidebits of the explained theories, stories, concepts by advancing to that part of the video.

Believe me when I tell you that many customers who have never seen this approach before will love you for this when delivering educational content.

I see where you are coming from. But you need to enjoy things and not be bored by them. If you are THAT hungry for knowledge, then maybe you should look elsewhere for it... not in the "make money" courses.

                        Enough said
                        Peace

A couple tips. I use these all the time btw.

For video files use a player that allows you to speed things up. I use GOM player and watch videos at double the original speed. There are also programs that do this for audio and allow you to save the speed up files as mp3.

This takes getting use to, but I find it's the only way to roll in my opinion.

                          Much love,
                          Dave.

All this begs for a new tool.

A new method to index audio/video content that bookmarks access to "the important" details on video and audio.

Similar to creating bullet points in a sales letter, a tool that bookmarks audios and videos where the "Good Information" is located.

We all could create a WIKI tool where the concensus of people bookmark what was important on a video or audio. When you download a video or audio, you go to the Wiki indexer website, look up the audio or video, get the bookmark concensus data, load it into your player and .......

....now a video/audio could be watched/listened to in one-tenth the time!

Kyle- if I know this one thing. Never judge people on what they say. You could completely miss the boat. I air my views. Sure I can go on lots of tangents. It's great. It gets a response off people.

In my life I have been on many forums. The best ones in my opinion is where I learned to roleplay. You could be any character you choose. And that in itself reveals absolutely nothing about the person except for the fact that they are great at writing. I could be my more cheerful self, I could be a complete bitch, I could be so seductive that you would consider cheating on your girlfriend/wife... so what does it say about me? Nothing.

                              Have fun!

Besides being sexy, and desirable is nice trait. But this time round I am more like the "serious me". You would probably dislike me and "assume" things.

Looks like I am not alone. I hate those mp3s and videos, Sarah,
I feel your pain. I don't bother to download free mp3s and videos
no more as I know there will be a lot of fluff in the 60 minute.

Besides, even the paid ones could have tons of fluff, because
it's really hard to continuously churn out high quality info non-stop
for 60 min, and they are selling their mp3s, they can't make it
20 mins, as it will have a low perceive value. But it just annoys
the hell out of me to listen to so much fluff.

                                Edited: Actually, it's not 60 minute, sorry, it's like 4 60-minute
                                mp3s. So it's like 4 hours...with 2 hours of fluff...

    That isn't just plain stupidity.

The audio was most likely ripped from one of his live platform presentations... the ones where he regularly pulls in ~$100k selling products from the back of the room.

He's got his presentation down to a fine science and if it was one of those presentations you can bet it made him more money than most people here make in a year.

As for long audio/video... there's no such thing as too long, only too boring. I've watched 1 minute videos that bored me to tears. And I've got 2-day audio seminars that I've listened to (and enjoyed) 5+ times.

    • Video, I pretty much ignore it in an internet marketing capacity. So much of it is lousy and thrown together. It just seems to be the newest fad.

But audio, I love. I love audio that's an hour or more. When I leave the house, I almost always have some interview, speech, audiobook, or seminar on my ipod instead of music. I would even say that I collect those audio files.
