Starting An Article Site (Not a directory)

Hey,

I'm very interested in starting an article site, like an online magazine.

Examples: growyourgame.com, livestrong.com, askmen.com

but i want mine to be on a different topic.

Problem:
How do I attract skilled, qualified article writers if the site is just starting out and I have no budget to pay them?

Is the option to link to their site enough incentive even if the site is a startup?

I'm more than willing to write some of the articles myself but it's just not feasible (in terms of time) for me to do all of it.

Any ideas?

I have the technical & marketing know-how once I get the site going, i just lack experience with attracting writers.

It depends on your subject. If you want to cover something like a sports team, you could try contacting writer's groups looking for aspiring sports writers looking to build a portfolio. Same with journalism schools. For that matter, you could contact the team's marketing department for material you could use, news feeds, etc.

If the subject is one with practicing professionals (medical, real estate, insurance, etc.), you could try contacting the professional associations with a call for articles. For many of these folks, the exposure and positioning as a published writer and expert is worth more than a few bucks for a writing fee. And even in this area, you could contact the journalism schools as well as those who teach the subject matter.

Of course, if you are set on skilled professional writers, be prepared to honor their expertise with dead presidents...
