I usually call myself an "Online Business Consultant".

Business Consultant sounds good!

Simple and looks pro too

Marketing consultant/Entrepreneur works good for me

Independent marketer seems nice.

I do "website development." I've found that terminology will shut them up. If I say anything about Internet marketing, most people will want me to "show them how" ..... within the next 5 minutes, of course.

That is a fine description on how to tell the world what you do. It is important for other people to know what the hell you do online as you spemnd lots of hours in front of the computer doing nothing.

Internet marketing is just part of a marketing plan, which is something rather complicated that involves lots of media for most mid-sized and big firms. Of course, the big dos have catched up the trend, and are spending billions on online marketing and advertising each year.

Internet Entrepreneur is what I say.

When I am in the mood, I just tell people that it is "none of their damn business..."

Must say that most people I mention Internet Marketing to say...'whats that'

I use Online Presence consultant, Online Business Consultant and Strategic Customer Creation Expert, as you say the words "Internet" & "Marketing" have been tarnished by get rich quick scams.

I still hate the fact my sons birth certificate has internet marketer on it as my occupation, even though I said Online Business Consultant thats what they took it as!

It's kind of funny when I would tell the older folk that I was an internet marketer or that I made money online. They would just look at me stupid and go "oh, so you don't have a real job huh? Are you a bum"? Growing up in the 1950s must have been so cool!

I used to have a landlord who despised and hated "internet marketers" and regarded to them as the scum of the Earth.

Call yourself whatever you like, people are going to hate/like you no matter what you are or what you do.

What? So those 200 $7 WSOs I just purchased aren't going to make me filthy rich? Damn.. back to the drawing board.

I so wish people understood the work and effort that was behind internet marketing. They're so misinformed by the WSO section, television ads and other people in various forums telling them that they make billions daily working 1-2 hours/daily.

Even when people are successful in what they do, if they truly enjoy what they're doing and have the right mindset, they're always working. They're always thinking up a new product or idea to make money.

This business is an addiction and money is the drug. You just have to make sure you control the drug and the drug doesn't control you and you'll be fine.

Internet marketer is the easiest thing to say.

Then people start to want details so I just tell them that I connect buyers with companies and when a sale is made, I earn a commission.

If I am in a real bad mood, I tell them to mind their own business or ignore their question.

People ask me what I do I just say I am a private investor. They ask what I invest in I say online businesses.

The title doesn't mean much, I mean the way we market has been around forever. From the markets in the middle east in bible times, to the direct mail campaigns of the 60s, to home shopping network, to internet marketing we have today. The name may change but selling will always be selling

Just tell em you're a bus driver. It allows you to get back to your beer without having to explain anything.

My girlfriend got tired of hearing me explain what I do to people with SEO. So, she tells them I sell hotdogs for a living lol

I rarely say "internet marketing." It's always, "marketing" or "self employed." You can also take the Tim Ferris route and just tell people you're a drug dealer to shut them up.

Nobody asks me... I guess I'm just too creepy.

Does it work? If it does... then they really don't care that much about what you're doing. (Maybe they were just being polite, or trying to start a conversation.)

haha ya internet marketing does sound a little weird I have to agree. I think there's another thread somewhere all about the elevator speech internet marketers use...

Most of us deal with a lot of writing, myself included. Sooooo, I just call myself something among the lines of Content Provider or simply a writer. For whatever reason people are always impressed to have a "writer" around.

I agree it is not that "Internet Marketing" sucks it is some of the people who have created some dodge products that have caused the problems.

Some of the ways that people have advertised products are totally deceitful and this has caused internet marketing to get a bad name. I think people who are doing the wrong thing should be hung out to dry. Let's clean up the industry.

SEO Consultant is what I tell people. I do get quite a few "what the hell is that?" replies
But OP is right, for one reason or another "internet marketer" has gotten a negative rep lately. Could be all the bogus MLM Get Rich NOW ads all over the Web.

It's internet marketing but it's not get rich quick but you can make money from being smart and building it a great way without really losing the traffic. I keep people subscribed on facebook, email, on webinars, I keep them in the funnel so they aren't easily lost so that I can build the relationship long term with value.

I say "I'M POOR" when my girlfriend asks me.

I call it what it is. I am a business owner.

I usually joke that I sell drugs to kids, gets a few funny looks.

Web developer. It doesn't matter that I mostly develop my own sites.

I saw someone say it already but i just usually say "I Sell Stuff Online," someone said internet entrepreneur, that sounds good, has a ring to it, gonna start using that...

Some of you think you're an Internet Marketer but what you really are is an Internet Publisher. You publish content and hope that the search engines and other sites will send you traffic so that you can monetize that traffic. Or you publish information products hoping that affiliates will promote them for you. Then you take some of that traffic and build your email list so that you can make money by writing emails.

A real Internet Marketer has a marketing budget, has a sales funnel, has real evergreen products and services to sell, has a unique selling proposition, knows the lifetime value of a customer, etc, And/Or has real clients that they do those things for. Most of you are NOT Internet Marketers.

I always said that I'm a web developer. This is because, I do provide web development service besides selling products & do affiliate marketing.

I call myself a Lead Generation Strategist... I like the sound better.. very prestigious lol

internet marketing is a gambling profession. you have to take risks and you need to be an opportunist to make money.

if you add fancy words, it can make you look legit and professional.. now we all know thats not the case. most of you are working in pajamas with the tv on, anti social and eat junk food for breakfast, lunch and dinner

It might be frustrating work at times, but I have to disagree with calling anything you can do in your pajamas with your feet up and laptop in your lap "hard work". I've done lots of hard work, and it ain't nothing like IM.

Who cares what you call it? The thing is, this forum is catering to many different "professions" if you want to call them that. Really, what it caters to is primarily online business owners (or people that aspire to that); multiple business owners in many cases.

Being a business owner (if you're a smart one) means your "job" is to make decisions and cause them to be carried out, mainly by other people or automation processes. You aren't necessarily the "doer of the job", but you are definitely the architect of the vision (unless you outsource that, which makes you simply the person who decided to set the vision in motion).

Even aside from that though, the bigger truth is that labels never capture who people are, and often they simply impose limits on how we see ourselves. One of the things I love about business, is it gives people an opportunity to constantly expand beyond any label anyone might want to put on them.

One of the things that make business owners interesting to talk to, is that people don't really understand what they do. Labels don't help people understand; the main purpose behind them is that we aren't comfortable with the unknown, and so we like to try to pin people down so we feel like we know who they are.

The problem with that is all it does is make us feel like we know each other, when in reality, we have no idea who each other is until we've had the kind of in depth conversations that most of us avoid like the plague, so we live in a world of convenient labels and illusions about each other.

I read something by Ram Dass long ago that I loved. Someone asked him who did he think he was, and his answer was "I have no idea". If you can get comfortable with that, you are getting close to the truth.

But to finally get to the point and answer the question, I think we should all start calling ourselves Dragon Whisperers.

I am a bad example, I am some guy that makes money on whatever works out.

I sell stuff on ebay
I'm an investor
and bla bla bla
I have no status, but I am proud of what I do

How about replacing Internet Marketing with Sales Rep. That is what 90% of the people in IM are.

This thread reminds me of a story I heard nearly two decades ago.

As most of you may know, I am from Oklahoma - "Indian Territory"...

There was a buddy of mine who was an American Indian. When people would ask what he was, he would tell them that he was a member of the Fukerwee Tribe...

It never failed that people were surprised that they had never heard of that tribe before, and they would comment on that fact....

My buddy always said that the name of the tribe went back to the mid-1800's... He said that they actually called themselves something different, but they adopted this name for their tribe from the White Man...

He said that they were a nomadic tribe, and every summer, they spent their time in the "summer lands"... And every winter, they rode south for the winter to stay in the "winter lands"...

One year, a winter storm came early, and they were caught in a major snow storm while traveling...

At a certain point, having traveled for many more days than normal in transit, they realized that they were lost...

A few more days later, the happened upon 4 white men on horses...

The tribal chief went out to meet the white men in an effort to seek help...

He spoke to the leader of the white men, and he said, "Wheer the Fuk er wee..."

From that day forward, the name stuck to the tribe like the plague, and the tribe finally adopted the name, since all of the white men from that day forward always called them the "Fukerwee"...

I tell people I have my own business if they want more
information I tell them I have an internet based business.

I know someone who answers the question with a question.

"What kind of business are you in?"

"Oh a restaurant."

"I help restaurant owners get the phone ringing with diners who
want to book tables..."

The key there is that he's taking the focus off himself and thinking
about who he's talking to.

In most cases I don't feel the need to tell people what I do (not
even potential clients early on).

I ask them what they do and get to know their business or life and
what's important to them.

If you really want to impress people asking questions and getting them
to talk about themselves will do it.

I basically say the same thing as I used to before the internet happened along.

I picked this up from a good friend of mine who owned a respected multi-million pound business - a chain of high-end shoe shops. When people asked what he did for a living (no doubt having seen him park his top of the range Porsche and noticed his immaculate designer suit) he simply replied "Me? I sell shoes in a shoe shop".

I've been an entrepreneur since age 37 (a while now), so I like Internet Entrepreneur. But really, my job title is Self-Made Man.

I agree internet marketing is hard, I wonder why people all ways say easy money. Nothing easy about getting traffic that actually is interested in making money and realize it takes money to make money

business coach/sales coach/marketing coach/internet marketing coach are other alternatives i see.
